Indian Archers to Miss World Cup Stage 2

  • India's Olympics-bound archers will not get to compete in the Stage 2 World Cup in Lausanne as their short-term visa application was rejected by the Switzerland embassy. India has been battling a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic that has forced many countries to ban travellers from India. The Indian archers will now directly compete in the Stage 3 World Cup in Paris, which will be the last Olympics qualification event for the Indian women's recurve team. The seven-day competition will begin on June 23. "Swiss embassy did not allow any short term visa and we had little time for the Stage 2 World Cup (May 17-23). Our focus is solely on the Paris World Cup now," Archery Association of secretary general Pramod Chandurkar said.

  • Four premier English counties, Middlesex, Surrey, Warwickshire and Lancashire, have expressed interest in hosting the remaining 31 games of the Indian Premier League, which was postponed after coronavirus breached the bio-bubble to infect four Indian cricketers.
  • With India anticipating a third wave of the pandemic later during the year, BCCI is exploring a window in September after the conclusion of India's England tour to complete the tournament.
  • India's tour of England ends on September 14.
  • According to ESPN Cricinfo, Lord's, Oval (both London), Edgbaston (Birmingham) and Emirates Old Trafford (Manchester) are understood to be part of the group who wrote to the ECB expressing their interest.
  • The plans would see the tournament completed in around two weeks in the second half of September," according to the report.
  • BCCI is ideally looking at a 20-day window with multiple double headers in order to complete the tournament.

  • Spain's Rafael Nadal spoiled Carlos Alcaraz's 18th birthday bash as he moved into the third round of Madrid Open with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
  • Fans at the Manolo Santana Stadium sang 'happy birthday' as Alcaraz stepped onto the court against his childhood idol. Find a Way to Send Back Foreign Players: IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel

  • IPL chairman Brijesh Patel said that the BCCI will "find a way" to send the league's foreign recruits back to their respective countries after the event was suspended indefinitely due to a COVID-19 outbreak in its bio-bubble.
  • The suspension of the tournament was announced after SunRisers Hyderabad's wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha tested positive for COVID-19 along with Delhi Capitals' veteran spinner Amit Mishra.
  • The foreigners involved in the lucrative league are concerned about returning to their respective countries due to travel restrictions imposed in the wake of a deadly resurgence of the pandemic in India.
  • The BCCI had assured foreign players of a safe return earlier as well.
  • The IPL had 14 Australian players left, after three pullouts a few days ago, along with 10 from New Zealand and 11 Englishmen. South Africa had 11 players in the league, which also featured nine West Indians, three Afghans and two from Bangladesh.

T20 WC May Get Shifted to UAE

  • This year's T20 World Cup is set to be moved from India to the UAE with the BCCI acknowledging that none of the participating teams would be "comfortable" coming here because "a third wave" of COVID-19 cases is expected at the time of the event.
  • While a final decision will be taken in a month's time but it is understood that even the Indian cricket board is jittery about holding the 16-team tournament in October-November after the ongoing IPL had to be suspended because of multiple COVID-19 cases inside the bio-bubble.
  • The suspension of IPL within four weeks is an indicator that it's not really safe to host a global event of that magnitude at a time when the country is fighting its worst health crisis in last 70 years.
