DRDO successfully flight-tested the new-generation Akash surface-to-air missile system from an integrated test range off the Odisha coast.
The missile was test-fired from a land-based platform and the "flawless performance" of its weapons system was confirmed by the complete flight data.
The new variant of the Akash missile (Akash-NG) can strike targets at a distance of around 60 km and fly at a speed of up to Mach 2.5.
The Akash missile system has been developed by the DRDO's laboratory in Hyderabad in collaboration with other wings of the premier defence research organisation.

Russia Successfully Tests S-500 Missile System
Russia has successfully test-fired its new S-500 air defence missile systems, from a southern training range, Kapustin Yar, on July 20, 2021. It hit a high-speed ballistic target as planned. The S-500 missile system is under development by the Almaz-Antey Air Defence Concern. After tests are successfully completed, the first S-500 systems which are also named the Triumfator-M and Prometheus will be placed at an air defence unit outside the city of Moscow.
The S-500 is the most advanced anti-missile system in the world and is expected to have a range of 600 km.
This missile system is also capable of countering attacks from space.
The S-500, also known as Prometey or 55R6M "Triumfator-M", is a Russian surface-to-air missile/anti-ballistic missile system which is the most advanced anti-missile system in the world and is capable of countering attacks from space.
Russia Unveils New Fighter Jet Prototype
Russian aircraft makers unveiled a prototype of a new fighter jet that features stealth capabilities and other advanced characteristics.
Russian President Vladimir Putin inspected the prospective warplane, displayed with much fanfare at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon. The air show opened in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.
Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi developed the new fighter under the LTS program, a Russian acronym for the Light Tactical Aircraft.
According to its makers, the prototype is set to make its maiden flight in 2023 and deliveries could start in 2026. The new design could be converted to an unpiloted version and a two-seat model.
Defence Ministry Issues Formal Tender for Mega Submarine Programme
The Defence Ministry issued the request for proposal (RFP) or the formal tender to domestically build six conventional submarines for the Navy at a cost of over Rs. 40,000 crore, over a month after the mega acquisition project was cleared.
It will be the first project to be implemented under the strategic partnership (SP) model that allows domestic firms to collaborate with foreign players to produce high-end military platforms in India.
The RFP was issued to the Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the two Indian companies shortlisted following a long-drawn process.
Both L&T and MDL will have to collaborate with one of the five already short-listed foreign shipyards -- Daewoo Shipbuilding (South Korea), ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (Germany), Navantia (Spain) and Naval Group (France) and JSC ROE (Russia).

Philippines Challenges Chinese Warship in South China Sea
The Philippines Coast Guard said it drove away a Chinese warship in the South China Sea, in another sign of tension between the two nations in the disputed waters.
The Coast Guard said it had sent a verbal challenge to Chinese warship spotted at Marie Louise Bank. The Chinese vessel eventually moved away from the area, the statement said.
The foreign vessel sent a radio message identifying itself as "Chinese Navy Warship 189" and asked the Philippine ship tailing it to keep distance, the Coast Guard said.

Anti Drone Swadeshi System will Soon be Deployed Along Country's Border
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that an Anti Drone Swadeshi System will soon be deployed along the country's border. He said, Defence Research and Development organisation along with other concerned agencies are working on this system.
He was addressing the 18th Investiture Ceremony of Border Security Force, BSF in New Delhi. He expressed confidence that the country's paramilitary forces are able meet all the challenges eminating time to time in protecting the borders.
Mr Shah said, the Narendra Modi government has accorded high priority to strengthen infrastructure along border areas of the country. Mr Shah said, the Prime Minister believed that if the infrastructure will not be improved along the border areas then the country's border will not remain protected.
Giving comparison to the work done during previous UPA Government, Mr Shah said, from the period 2008 to 2014, only 3600 kilometres roads along the border were constructed but in the Narendra Modi government, work of 4764 kilometres roads were completed.
He also informed that for smooth movement of paramilitary forces, where only one tunnel was built in previous regime, now 6 such tunnels were built and work on 19 tunnels is in progress. Mr Shah also assured that there will be no gaps in fencing along borders and work will be completed before 2022.

Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli hands over Fifteen 12.7 mm M2 NATO Stabilized Remote Control Gun to Indian Navy & 10 to Indian Coast Guard. It is manufactured with transfer of technology agreement from Elbit Systems, Israel.
The gun is meant for marine applications and can remotely engage targets. It is equipped with an inbuilt CCD camera, thermal imager and a laser range finder for observation and tracking of targets through day and night operations.

India, Sri Lanka and Maldives Hold Virtual Trilateral Exercise on Maritime Security
Top defence officials from India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives participated in a virtual trilateral table top exercise where they discussed best practices and procedures for countering common trans-national maritime crime like curbing narcotics and assistance in maritime search and rescue.
The two-day exercise, TTX-2021, from July 14 to July 15 aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and exchange of best practices procedures for countering common trans national crime was coordinated by the Maritime Warfare Centre, Mumbai, the Indian High Commission here said.
The exercise focussed on maritime crimes like curbing narcotics and assistance in maritime search and rescue in the region.
