Poet Puthussery Ramachandran Passes Away

  • Malayalam poet, scholar and teacher Puthussery Ramachandran passed away after a brief illness. He was 92.
  • A scholar of Dravidian linguistics and a professor of Malayalam for more than 30 years, Dr. Ramachandran was a recipient of several awards.
  • He was the honorary director of the International Centre for Kerala Studies, University of Kerala.
  • Dr. Ramachandran played a major role in the preparation of the elaborate document which culminated in the recognition of Malayalam as a classical language by the Central government in 2013.
  • Dr. Ramachandran is credited with publishing the complete text of Kannassa Ramayanam, the first complete Ramayana in Malayalam, with notes and interpretations.
  • The Sahitya Akademi honoured him with its translation award in 2005 and Bhasha Samman in 2014. In 2009, he was conferred the fellowship of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

Government Appoints Justice B. L. Bhat as Officiating Chairman of NCLAT

  • The government appointed Justice Bansi Lal Bhat as the officiating chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). NCLAT Chairperson Justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya retired on 13th March.
  • The appointment of Justice Bhat, a former judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, is for a period of three months with effect from 15.03.2020 or until a regular Chairperson is appointed or until further orders, whichever is earliest.
  • In a separate notification, the government appointed Justice Anant Bijay Singh as judicial member and Shreesha Merla and Alok Srivastava as technical members of the appellate tribunal.
  • Justice Bhat had joined NCLAT as a judicial member on October 17, 2017.

Famous Swedish Actor Max von Sydow Passes Away

  • Carl Adolf von Sydow, Swedish actor, passed away at the age of 90 in Provence, France. He was born on April 10, 1929 in Lund, Sweden. He was known for his character who played a game of chess with death in the movie "Seventh Seal", directed by Ingmar Bergman and also the Three-Eyed Raven (Fictional Character) in "Games of Thrones" and the horror classic film "The Exorcist".
  • The actor's career spanned over 65 years in cinema and he worked across genres in American and European Cinema, Hollywood blockbusters, television shows.

IDFC FIRST Bank Appoints Amitabh Bachchan as its Brand Ambassador

  • Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan was appointed as the first ever ambassador of the IDFC FIRST Bank.
  • IDFC FIRST Bank was founded as a new entity by the merger of IDFC Bank and Capital First on December 18, 2018.

SBI Appoints Chalasani Venkat Nageswar as CFO

  • Chalasani Venkat Nageswar as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as per lender's filing with the stock exchanges.
  • "Shri Chalasani Venkat Nageswar, Deputy Managing Director, International Banking Group has been given additional charge of Deputy Managing Director & CFO with immediate effect till further orders," said the bank in its filing.
  • The decision comes days post the Reserve Bank (RBI) superseded private lender Yes Bank and appointed SBI's Former Deputy Managing Director and CFO, Prashant Kumar as its administrator.
  • As per the new appointment, Nageswar will be balancing the responsibility of being Deputy Managing Director, International Banking Group along with the additional charge of CFO.
  • He holds over three decades of experience and has diverse knowledge across several aspects of banking, foreign exchange, money markets, equities and investments. He currently oversees the treasury portfolio of the bank.

Lt Gen KJS Dhillon is DG of Defence Intelligence Agency

  • Former decorated Commander of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon was appointed as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, and Deputy Chief of Integrating Defence Staff (Intelligence) under the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in the Department of Military Affairs.
  • The Defence Intelligence Agency is an organisation responsible for providing and coordinating military intelligence for the Indian armed forces. The DIA was created in 2002 on recommendations of a Group of Ministers which looked into lapses leading to the Kargil intrusion in 1999.

Nupur Kulshrestha Becomes Indian Coast Guard's First Woman DIG

  • Nupur Kulshrestha became the 1st woman to be promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Indian Coast Guard. She joined Indian Coast Guard in 1999.
  • On August 18, 1978 ICG was established by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India as an independent armed force of India & is operated under the Ministry of defence.
  • It is an armed forces & multi-mission organisation, which conducts real life operations at sea round the year. Maritime zones of India are divided into 5 coast guard regions, namely; North- West, West, East,North-East & Andman & nicobar & are headquartered in Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolakata& Port Blair.

Former Union Law Minister H. R. Bhardwaj Passes Away

  • Former Law Minister and senior Congress leader Hans Raj Bhardwaj died after a cardiac arrest. He was 83.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of former Union minister Hans Raj Bhardwaj.
  • Bhardwaj was a Rajya Sabha member for five terms from April 1982 to June 2009.
  • He was the law minister for 14 years and served under the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. He was appointed the governor of Karnataka in 2009.
  • It was during Bhardwaj's tenure as law minister that Bofors-accused Ottavio Quattrocchi was given a clean chit by then UPA government in 2009.
