Veteran Actor Nimmi Passes Away At 88

  •  Nimmi, the doe-eyed star of 1950s and '60s Hindi movies such as "Aan", "Barsaat" and "Deedar", has died after prolonged illness. She was 88.
  • The actor, born as Nawab Banoo, came to be known by her screen name 'Nimmi', which was given to her by filmmaker Raj Kapoor, who first spotted her as a shy teen on the sets of his film "Andaz".
  • Raj Kapoor cast her as the second lead in "Barsaat" in 1949. The film had three popular songs — 'Barsaat me hamse mile tum', 'Hawa me udta jaye' and 'Meri Patli qamar hai' — picturised on her.

Satyajit Ray's Associate, Veteran Photographer Nemai Ghosh Dies At 86

  •  Veteran photographer Nemai Ghosh, who had a long association with filmmaker Satyajit Ray, passed away at a hospital in Kolkata on March 25, 2020 his family said. He was 86.
  • Nemai Ghosh had been suffering from age-related ailments for the past few years.
  • He was known for working with Satyajit Ray as a still photographer who captured the master craftsman in different moods at sets besides framing actors as they faced camera for over two decades. Nemai Ghosh made his debut with Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) and was with Satyajit Ray till his last film Agantuk (1991).

Prince charles tests positive but 'remains in good health'

  •  The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus, Clarence House has announced.
  • Prince Charles, 71, is displaying mild symptoms "but otherwise remains in good health", a spokesman said, adding that the Duchess of Cornwall, 72, has been tested but does not have the virus.
  • Charles and Camilla are now self-isolating at Balmoral.
  • Buckingham Palace said the Queen last saw her son, the heir to the throne, on 12 March, but was "in good health".
  • The palace added that the Duke of Edinburgh was not present at that meeting, and that the Queen was now "following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare".

Acclaimed Playwright Terrence McNally Dies At 81 Of Complications From Coronavirus

  •  Terrence McNally, one of America's great playwrights whose prolific career included winning Tony Awards for the plays "Love! Valour! Compassion!" and "Master Class" and the musicals "Ragtime" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman," has died of complications from the coronavirus. He was 81.
  • McNally died Tuesday at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida, according to representative Matt Polk. McNally was a lung cancer survivor who lived with chronic inflammatory lung disease.

Freedom Fighter Nagorao Deshpande Dies At 90

  •  Nagorav Vitthalrao Deshpande died of prolonged illness in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district.
  • Deshpande (90) was severely ill for the past four months, the deceased's son Suresh Deshpande.
  • A native of Partur tehsil in Jalna, Deshpande took part in the Hyderabad freedom struggle in 1948, when he was in his teens.
  • He led the Satyagraha movement, organised under leadersip of late Swami Ramanand Teerth and Govindbhai Shroff in Marathwada.
  • Deshpande was the founder secretary of Marathwada Janta Vikas Parishad and Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada Research Centre in Aurangabad.
  • He was conferred with the first 'Granth Mitra' award by the Maharashtra government in 1996.
  • Deshpande also worked in the field of adult education in rural areas here, Suresh Deshpande said.

2 IRS Officers Appointed CBDT Members

  •  Indian Revenue Service officers Satish Kumar Gupta and Krishan Mohan Prasad have been appointed new members in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, issued the order approving the appointment of the 1984-batch IRS officers of the Income Tax Department cadre.
  • While Gupta is currently posted as Principal Chief Commissioner (PCCIT) of I-T in Mumbai, Prasad is serving as the PCCIT of National e-assessment centre in Delhi.
  • The CBDT, which frames policy for the tax department, is headed by a chairman and has six other senior IRS officials as its member.

Manu Dibango: African Saxophone Legend Dies Of Covid-19

  •  The African saxophone legend Manu Dibango has died in Paris after catching coronavirus.
  • Dibango - best known for his 1972 hit Soul Makossa - is one of the first global stars to die from Covid-19.
  • The 86-year-old fused jazz and funk music with traditional sounds from his home country, Cameroon.
  • He collaborated with numerous artists over a long career, including US pianist Herbie Hancock and Nigeria's Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
  • The Cameroonian musician filed a lawsuit in 2009 saying Michael Jackson had stolen a hook from his song, Soul Makossa, for two tracks on the world's best-selling album, Thriller. Jackson settled the case out of court.

Albert Uderzo, A Creator Of French Hero Asterix, Dies At 92

  • Albert Uderzo, one of the two creators of the beloved comic book character Asterix, who captured the spirit of the Gauls of yore and grew a reputation worldwide, died. He was 92.
  • The French press quoted family members as saying that Uderzo died of a heart attack in the Paris suburb of Neuilly.
  • Asterix, portrayed as a short man with a droopy mustache always wearing a helmet with wings, was created in the early 1960s by Uderzo and Rene Goscinny. The character lived in a village in Gaul, present-day France, resisting Roman conquerors, along with his inseparable big-bellied friend, Obelix.

Omar Abdullah Released After Nearly 8 Months Of Detention

  • Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was released on March 24, 2020 after nearly eight months of detention.
  • His release order was issued after charges under the Public Safety Act (PSA), slapped on him in February, were revoked.
  • Abdullah, who turned 50 on March 10, had spent 232 days in custody since the government announced abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state on August 5 last year.

  • Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia's birth anniversary was observed on 23 March. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia for social empowerment and his service-oriented philosophy that continues to inspire the citizens of the country.
  • Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia was born on 23 March 1910 at Akbarpur, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, British India. He studied at the Banaras Hindu University. He earned his BA degree in Vidyasagar College, University of Calcutta. The socialist political leader was an activist in the Indian independence movement. He participated in the Quit India Movement, the Indian independence movement.

Actor, Director Visu Dies At 75

  • Actor, director and stage artiste M.R. Viswanathan, popularly known as Visu died in the city. He was 75 years old.
  • Mr Viswanathan began acting on stage from his school days and then started working in the Tamil film industry. He was part of Y.G. Parthasarathy's theatre troupe and later went to start his own troupe as well.
  • While he initially was a writer for films such as Pattina Pravesam and Thillu Mullu, he also began acting and directing films.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to revolutionary freedom fighters - Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their death anniversary (March 23). In a tweet, Mr Modi said, nation will always remember their sacrifices.  
  • Prime Minister also paid homage to veteran socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia on his birth anniversary. Mr Modi said, Dr Lohia's works and ideology will always inspire people.

Kenny Rogers: Country Music Legend Dies Aged 81

  •  American country music legend Kenny Rogers has died aged 81.
  • A family representative said he "passed away peacefully at home from natural causes".
  • Rogers topped pop and country charts during the 1970s and 1980s, and won three Grammy awards.
  • Known for his husky voice and ballads including The Gambler, Lucille and Coward Of The County, his career spanned more than six decades.
  • He once summed up his popularity by explaining that he believed his songs "say what every man wants to say and that every woman wants to hear".
  • After growing up in poverty on a federal housing estate in Houston, Texas, Rogers began recording with a string of bands, including Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, before launching his solo career in 1976.
