P. K. Banerjee Passes Away

  • Former Indian football captain Pradip Kumar Banerjee passed away in Kolkata at the age of 83 years. He had been struggling with ill health for a while.
  • A revered figure in Indian football, Banerjee captained the national team in what is considered its golden period. He won the gold medal in the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. A striker par excellence, Banerjee was a proven leader both as a player as well as a coach. He was involved as a player and coach with both the Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

Arundhati Bhattacharya Resigns from CRISIL Board

  • Arundhati Bhattacharya, Former chairman of State Bank of India, submitted the resignation as an independent director of CRISIL effective from April 15. She will take charge as a chairperson and CEO for the India operations of Salesforce, USA from April 20.
  • She is the first woman to be the chairperson of the State Bank of India and retired in 2017. She was also the 36th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2014.

Permanent Commission to Women in Indian Navy: SC

  • Justice D. Y. Chandrachud directed the Centre to grant permanent commission to serving women officers in Navy within three months with increments.
  • The judgment follows a verdict by the Apex Court in favour of granting permanent for women in the Indian Army. A permanent commission entitles an officer to serve in the Navy till he/she retires unlike Short Service Commission (SSC), which is currently for 10 years and can be extended by four more years, a total of 14 years.

Ashwani Lohani New Chairman of APTDC

  • Former Chairman and Managing Director of Air India Ashwani Lohani was appointed as the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC).
  • According to an order issued by Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney, the appointment is for a period of one year.
  • Lohani had previously served as Chairman of the Railway Board and CMD of the India Tourism Development Corporation.

M. Gopal Reddy New Chief Secretary of MP

  • Madhya Pradesh (MP) Government appointed M. Gopal Reddy as Chief Secretary of the state replacing Sudhi Ranjan Mohanty with effect from April 1, 2020.
  • M. Gopal Reddy is a 1985 batch IAS officer is currently serving as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) before he takes charge as the state's new Chief Secretary. He worked as a vice-chairman of the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) prior to the current position.
  • Sudhi Ranjan Mohanty is to take charge as a Director General of RCPV Academy of Administration.

Patil Puttappa Passes Away

  • Veteran journalist and Gandhian Patil Puttappa, better known as 'Papu', passed away after a brief illness. He was 99.
  • A journalist par excellence, writer, khadi activist, and a former Rajya Sabha member, Mr. Puttappa was a strong voice of Kannada and Kannadigas throughout his life.
  • Recipient of several awards, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, T.S.R. Award, and "Nadoja', Mr. Puttappa was born at Kurubagoda village in the then undivided Dharwad district (now, Haveri district) to Siddalingappa and Mallamma.

Ravinder Singh Dhillon CMD of PFC

  • The Appointments Committee cleared the appointment of Ravinder Singh Dhillon as Chairman and Managing Director of Power Finance Corporation (PFC).
  • Dhillon, posted as Director (Projects), has been cleared for appointment as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) in PFC with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post on or after June 1 till the date of his superannuation on May 31, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • In a separate order, the ACC has approved the appointment of 1997-batch Indian Foreign Service Officer Somnath Ghosh as officer on special duty in the Department of Defence for an overall period of three years up to September 11, 2022 or until further orders.

Virat Kohli Brand Ambassador of iQOO

  • iQOO (i Quest On and On) named Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador. The brand's first product in India is iQOO 3, 5G-enabled smartphone. iQOO is a sub-brand of Vivo in China and entered India as a separate entity and also part of the BBK group. The BBK (Guangdong Bu Bu Gao Electronics Industrial Private Limited) group markets smartphones of 5 brands: Vivo, OnePlus, OPPO, RealMe and iQOO (in India).

Italian Architect of Barcelona Olympic Stadium Vittorio Gregotti Dies

  • Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti, who designed the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics stadium, died of the coronavirus at the age of 92.
  • According to Italian media, Gregotti was hospitalised in Milan after contracting COVID-19, and eventually died of pneumonia.
  • Gregotti also designed the Arcimboldi Opera Theatre in Milan.

Poet Puthussery Ramachandran Passes Away

  • Malayalam poet, scholar and teacher Puthussery Ramachandran passed away after a brief illness. He was 92.
  • A scholar of Dravidian linguistics and a professor of Malayalam for more than 30 years, Dr. Ramachandran was a recipient of several awards.
  • He was the honorary director of the International Centre for Kerala Studies, University of Kerala.
  • Dr. Ramachandran played a major role in the preparation of the elaborate document which culminated in the recognition of Malayalam as a classical language by the Central government in 2013.
  • Dr. Ramachandran is credited with publishing the complete text of Kannassa Ramayanam, the first complete Ramayana in Malayalam, with notes and interpretations.
  • The Sahitya Akademi honoured him with its translation award in 2005 and Bhasha Samman in 2014. In 2009, he was conferred the fellowship of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

Government Appoints Justice B. L. Bhat as Officiating Chairman of NCLAT

  • The government appointed Justice Bansi Lal Bhat as the officiating chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). NCLAT Chairperson Justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya retired on 13th March.
  • The appointment of Justice Bhat, a former judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, is for a period of three months with effect from 15.03.2020 or until a regular Chairperson is appointed or until further orders, whichever is earliest.
  • In a separate notification, the government appointed Justice Anant Bijay Singh as judicial member and Shreesha Merla and Alok Srivastava as technical members of the appellate tribunal.
  • Justice Bhat had joined NCLAT as a judicial member on October 17, 2017.
