Veteran DMK Leader K. Anbhazhagan Passes Away

  • Veteran DMK leader K. Anbazhagan passed away following a brief illness. He was aged 97.
  • A nine-time MLA, Anbazhagan, was the party's general secretary for 43 years. He had been staying away from active politics for some time due to illness.
  • All the DMK programmes were postponed for a week.
  • Known as Perasiriyar (professor) in the DMK circles, Anbazhagan had served as the Tamil Nadu finance minister and minister of public welfare.

SBI Life Insurance Company Re-appoints Sanjeev Nautiyal as MD & CEO

  • The Board of Directors of SBI Life Insurance Company re-appointed Sanjeev Nautiyal as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer of the company(CEO) with effect from March 10, 2020 replacing Arijit Basu.
  • This approval is given by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and members of the Company.
  • He served as a Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the SBI Life since March 10, 2018.

Bimal Julka New CIC

  • Information Commissioner Bimal Julka was appointed as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).
  • President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Julka as CIC in the Central Information Commission at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Later, Julka administered the oath of office to Amita Pandove as Information Commissioner.
  • With her induction, the total number of Information Commissioners in the Central Information Commission, including the Chief Information Commissioner, has gone up to seven.
  • The transparency watchdog was functioning without a chief after Sudhir Bhargava retired on January 11, 2020. It is operating at a reduced strength of six information commissioners, against the sanctioned strength of 10, excluding the CIC.

Former UN Chief Javier Perez de Cuellar Dies

  • Former UN chief Javier Perez de Cuellar, who led the world body during the Iran-Iraq war and the civil war in El Salvador, died in 2020 in his native Peru.
  • The Peruvian diplomat served as the fifth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1981 to 1991.
  • Antonio Guterres, who currently heads the UN, had wished him "with pride & joy" a happy 100th birthday on January 19.

Ramniklal Solanki Giant of Gujarati Journalism Passes Away

  • Ramniklal Solanki, a giant of Gujarati journalism and the pioneer of the British Asian media, passed away in Ahmedabad, India aged 88.
  • Solanki was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of UK-based 'Garavi Gujarat' newsweekly and the Asian Media Group (AMG), which is Britain's biggest and one of the most successful Asian media businesses.
  • Solanki's contribution was recognised by Queen Elizabeth II, who honoured him with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997 a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007.
  • OBE is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
  • CBE is the highest ranking Order of the British Empire award.

Jack Welch Former Chairman and CEO of GE Dies

  • Jack Welch, a railroad conductor's son who became Chairman and CEO of General Electric and led it for two decades, growing its market value from $12 billion to $410 billion, died. He was 84.
  • With a determination to win by busting up bureaucratic complacency, Welch earned two titles "manager of the century," and "Neutron Jack," the latter for slashing tens of thousands of jobs. Under his leadership, GE became the world's most valuable company, after Microsoft. Its fortunes later turned south.
  • While at the helm, Welch bought and sold scores of businesses, expanding the industrial giant into financial services and consulting. GE Capital Bank was founded seven years into his tenure. His acquisitions included RCA — then-owner of NBC — and Kidder Peabody, the brokerage that became entangled in an insider trading scandal.

JD(U) MP Baidyanath Prasad Mahto Passes Away

  • Jata Dal(United)'s Lok Sabha Member Baidyanath Prasad Mahto from Valmiki Nagar Parliamentary Constituency passed away while undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Delhi.
  • He was 72 and elected to Lok Sabha from Valmiki Nagar in 2009 and 2019 as Janata DaL(United) candidate.
  • He was deputy leader of the Janata Dal(United) in the current Lok Sabha. Condoling his death, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Mahto was very popular in his Constituency.

Legendary Physicist Freeman Dyson Dies

  • Renowned physicist, scholar and one of the most influential thinkers of our times, Freeman Dyson, passed away at the age of 96.
  • Dyson is famous for several out-of-the-box concepts that often show up in science fiction, futuristic movies and video games. Some of his concepts are hugely popular, like the "Dyson tree", which is a hypothetical genetically-engineered plant capable of growing in a comet.
  • He is also known for the "Dyson sphere", a thought experiment that explores how a space-faring civilisation would meet its energy needs with a hypothetical megastructure that encompasses a star and absorbs its power. The concept was used in a television episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Madhuri Kanitkar India's Third Woman Lt. General

  • Madhuri Kanitkar was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General, becoming the third woman officer in the country to hold the rank. Kanitkar has served in the Indian military for 37 years. She has now been posted to Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) under the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
  • IDS was set up in 2001 as a single-point organisation for jointmanship, which integrates policy, doctrine, war fighting, and military purchases. It refers to a degree of co-ordination and integration in terms of strategy, capabilities and execution across the three services. IDS now comes under the CDS. Before Kanitkar, Lt. Gen. Punita Arora was the first woman to don the rank of Lieutenant General and Padmavathy Bandopadhyay was the first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force and the second woman in the armed forces to be promoted to the three-star rank.
