Safer Internet Day

  • Safer Internet Day is observed every year on the second day of the second week of February with an aim to provide safer and better internet, where every user gets to use the internet responsibly and without getting their data leaked. The day is being celebrated in around 15 countries across the world.
  • Safer Internet Day was first initiated in 2004 and is as part of the EU's 'Better Internet for Kids' policy, which aims to increase access to high-quality content for children and young people, increase awareness and empowerment, create a safe environment for children online, and fight against child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation.
  • The theme for Safer Internet Day 2022 was 'All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online'.

Kala Ghoda Festival

  • The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is annual festival, nine days long, commencing always on the first Saturday of February and closing is always on the second Sunday in February, in the Kala Ghoda area of South Mumbai, India.
  • From its inception in 1999, the Festival has grown in stature and popularity, attracting visitors and participants from other parts of the country, and the world. The Festival is organised by the Kala Ghoda Association (a non-profit organisation that states its objectives as "physically upgrading the Kala Ghoda sub-precinct and making it the Art District of Mumbai") and curated by teams handling each of the 12 sections of the festival.

International Day of Human Fraternity

  • February 4 marked the International Day of Human Fraternity. The annual event designated by the United Nations honours the religious and cultural diversity present in our world. Amidst rising religious intolerance in parts of the world, International Day of Human Fraternity seeks to showcase how diverse religions and cultures enrich our life and progress as humankind.
  • In 2020, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity, with resolution 75/200. However, the core essence of the ideology behind this day has been present since 1999.
  • Theme 2022 for International Day of Human Fraternity was "Human Fraternity in Action" which means that humanity has decided to disperse and renounce all kinds of religious bigotry and xenophobia.

Sri Lanka's Independence Day

  • Sri Lanka's Independence Day or National day is celebrated annually on February 4 to commemorate the country's political independence from British rule in 1948. It is celebrated all over the country through a flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. Usually, the official celebration takes place in Colombo, where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech.
  • It was after 450 years of colonial rule, under three of Europe's maritime and military powers that Ceylon gained her independence from Great Britain in 1948.

World Cancer Day

  • Every year, World Cancer Day is observed on February 4 to raise awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
  • World Cancer Day was established on February 4, 2000 at the World Cancer Summit against Cancer for the New Millenium, which was held in Paris.
  • The Charter of Paris Against Cancer, which was created to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, also included an article establishing the anniversary of the document's official signing as World Cancer Day, was signed at the Summit by the then General Director of UNESCO, Kōichirō Matsuura, and then French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on February 4, 2000.
  • The theme for World Cancer Day 2022 was "Close the Care Gap". The theme aimed to raise awareness about the vast difference in cancer care and prevention that people from different sections of society can avail. People with low income, lack of educational qualifications, and disabilities face considerable barriers in availing care for cancer.

The Tribune Celebrates Foundation Day

  • Floral tributes were paid to The Tribune founder Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia on the 141st anniversary of the publication.
  • A great visionary and philanthropist, Majithia founded The Tribune on February 2, 1881, in Lahore. Members of The Tribune Trust Justice SS Sodhi (retd) and Gurbachan Jagat; Punjabi Tribune Editor Swaraj Bir Singh, Dainik Tribune Editor Raj Kumar Singh and General Manager Vinay Verma paid tribute to Majithia. Hundreds of employees also remembered the founder on the occasion.
  • The Tribune is an Indian English-language daily newspaper published from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Chandigarh and New Delhi.
  • The Tribune has two sister publications: Dainik Tribune (in Hindi) and Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi). R. K. Singh is the Editor of Dainik Tribune and Sahitya Akademi Award winner and prominent Punjabi playwright Swaraj Bir Singh is the editor of the Punjabi Tribune. The online edition of The Tribune was launched in July 1998, and the online editions of the Punjabi Tribune and Dainik Tribune were launched on 16 August 2010.

World Wetlands Day

  • World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2 every year to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands, not only for people but the planet Earth as well. The day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.
  • This is the first year when the World Wetlands Day was observed as a United Nations international day, following its adoption by the UN General Assembly on August 30, 2021.
  • The UN defines wetlands as ecosystems where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life.
  • The theme for World Wetlands Day 2022 was 'Wetlands action for people and nature', highlighting the importance of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and planetary health.
