PM Modi Delivers Inaugural Address at TERI Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address at The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) World Sustainable Development Summit. World Sustainable Development Summit is TERI's annual flagship event. The theme for the 2022 summit was 'Towards a Resilient Planet: Ensuring a Sustainable and Equitable Future'.
  • The summit discussed a wide range of issues including climate change, sustainable production, energy transitions, global commons, and resource security.
  • The three-day summit was attended by Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic; Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana; Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations; heads of various intergovernmental organizations, and ministers and envoys from more than a dozen countries and delegates from over 120 countries.

Sarojini Naidu's Birth Anniversary

  • India celebrates Sarojini Naidu's birthday as National Women's Day every year on February 13. She was born on February 13, 1879. She was famous for her nickname 'Nightingale of India' or 'Bharat Kokila' because of her poems. She has written several poems on themes like romance, patriotism, and tragedy.
  • Sarojini Naidu is famous all over the world for her literary contribution. To honor the contributions of Sarojini Naidu, February 13 is observed as National Women's Day of India.
  • Sarojini Naidu was not only a freedom fighter, but she also became the first woman governor of the United Provinces, the present Uttar Pradesh. She was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925 because of her political and educational abilities. In 1942, Gandhiji started Quit India Movement and British Government kept Sarojini Naidu in imprisonment for 21 months.
  • National Women's Day is observed to celebrate the social, cultural, political, and economic achievements of women.

World Radio Day

  • World Radio Day is an international day celebrated on February 13 each year. The Day was decided by UNESCO on November 3, 2011, during its 36th conference.
  • Following a request from the Spanish Radio Academy on September 20, 2010, Spain proposed that the UNESCO Executive Board include an agenda item on the proclamation of a World Radio Day.
  • The first World Radio Day was celebrated in 2012.
  • "Yes to Radio, Yes to trust" was the theme of World Radio Day 2022.

Darwin Day

  • Darwin Day is celebration on February 12 to commemorate the birthday of Charles Darwin. The day is used to highlight Darwin's contributions to science and to promote science in general. Darwin Day is celebrated around the world.
  • Darwin Day celebration began with three Darwin enthusiasts: Dr. Robert Stephens, who motivated the community of Humanist in Silicon Valley to initiate an annual Darwin Day celebration in 1995; Prof. Massimo Pigliucci, who organised an annual Darwin Day event at the University of Tennessee in 1997 and Amanda Chesworth, who joined Stephens to officially incorporate the Darwin Day Program in 2000 in New Mexico. Two years later, the Darwin Day celebration was reincorporated in California as the Darwin Day Celebration to encourage science and humanity throughout the globe.

National Productivity Day

  • National Productivity Day is observed every year in India on February 12. The objective of National Productivity Council is stimulating and promoting productivity and quality consciousness across all sectors in the country. The main observance of the day is to encourage all stakeholders in the implementation of productivity tools and techniques.
  • The day is celebrated by the National Productivity Council (NPC) to promote productivity culture in India. National Productivity Council (NPC) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Government of India is a premier institution for propagating productivity movement in India. NPC works for providing solutions towards accelerating productivity, enhancing competitiveness, increasing productivity.

FICCI CASCADE Launches 'Anti-Smuggling Day'

  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry's (FICCI) Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy (CASCADE) took a lead to mark the launch of Anti-Smuggling Day on February 11 beginning 2022.
  • 'Anti-Smuggling Day' will represent a major step in the fight against the global menace of smuggling. With no country immune to the impact of smuggling and no single sector can be said to be an exception, this day will highlight the mounting hazard of smuggling.

World Day of the Sick

  • World Day of the Sick is observed on February 11. The year 2022 was 30th World Day of the Sick. The day was declared by Pope John Paul II in 1992 and coincides with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes.
  • Because of the pandemic, the 30th World Day of the Sick could not take place in Arequipa, Peru, as planned. It took place in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
  • Pope John Paul II was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease as early as 1991 and the illness was confirmed in 2001. It is believed that after one year of diagnosis of the disease he decided to create the World Day of the Sick.
  • The theme for World Day of the Sick was "Be merciful, as your Father is merciful".

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

  • Observed on February 11 every year, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was declared by the United Nations General Assembly. This day recognises the important role women play in the field of science and technology. Gender equality and science are crucial for achieving development goals, which include the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our community has made several efforts to engage women and girls in science but they continue to exclude from participating fully in the field.
  • The theme for International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022 was 'Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Water Unites Us'.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Kicks off NITI Aayog's Fintech Open Summit

  • NITI Aayog, in collaboration with PhonePe, AWS and EY, organized a three-week-long virtual summit, 'Fintech Open', from 7–28 February. The summit was inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways, Communications, and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw in the presence of NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar. A first-of-its-kind initiative, Fintech Open will bring together regulators, fintech professionals and enthusiasts, industry leaders, the start-up community, and developers to collaborate, exchange ideas and innovate.
  • An open platform is created using public investment, wherein numerous private entrepreneurs, start-ups and developers can join to create new solutions. For example, today, 270 banks are connected with the UPI and many entrepreneurs and start-ups have provided solutions that have helped increase the country's fintech adoption rate—which is the highest globally at 87%.'

World Pulses Day

  • World Pulses Day is celebrated on February 10 every year and recognised Pulses as a global food. Pulses, also known as legumes, are the edible seeds of leguminous plants cultivated for food. Dried beans, lentils, and peas are the most commonly known and consumed types of pulses. The UN General Assembly in 2019 decided to dedicate a day to Pulses to increase awareness and access to pulses globally known as World Pulses Day.
  • On World Pulses Day, people make efforts in creating awareness about the importance of Pulses in sustainable food production. Donations of pulses are made to provide it to the people it is not easily accessible.
  • World Pulses Day 2022 was under the theme "Pulses to empower youth in achieving sustainable agrifood systems".

National Deworming Day

  • Every year, February 10 is observed as National Deworming Day to create awareness about the importance of deworming all preschool and school-age children between the ages of 1-19 years. Led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, deworming is done through the platforms of schools and Anganwadi centres in order "to improve their overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life.
