National Science Day

  • In the year 1928, C.V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect or Raman Scattering which defines the inelastic scattering of photons by the matter which means there is an exchange of energy and change in light's direction. In 1930, the scientist won the Noble Prize for his discovery. To celebrate the victory, in 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Central Government to mark February 28 as the National Science Day (NSD). Since then, National Science Day is celebrated on February 28.
  • Across the country, people celebrate this day by arranging events, science fairs, quiz competitions, Science model exhibitions and speech competitions.
  • The theme for NSD 2022 was 'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future'. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched this theme, highlighting a fold integrated approach for science and technology for a sustainable future.

Rare Disease Day

  • Rare Disease Day is observed on the last day of February. The day is observed globally and raises awareness about, as the name suggests, rare diseases.
  • Rare Disease Day was set up and globally coordinated by EURORDIS (European Organisation for rare diseases) and was first observed in 2008. EURORDIS is a non-governmental and patient-driven organisation that comprises a total of 998rare-disease patients from 74 countries. These 998 people work for the betterment of roughly 30 million people who suffer from rare diseases in Europe.
  • Now, the Rare Disease Day and the backbone organisation, EURORDIS, boasts of 106 countries involved in their initiative. Over the years, they have successfully organised more than 600 events.
  • This year, the theme of Rare Disease Day was 'Share Your Colours.' With this year's observance, the organisation will try to influence policies to improve the lives of people living with rare diseases.

3rd National Protein Day

  • In India, February 27th is celebrated as the National Protein Day, to create awareness about protein deficiency and encourage people to include of this macronutrient in their diet. The day urges people to include this crucial macronutrient in their diet. The day also helps people to learn more about different sources of plant and animal protein. Protein Day is celebrating its third year in 2022. This year's theme of India Protein Day is 'Food Futurism'.
  • The day was launched on February 27, 2020, by the 'Right to Protein', a national-level public health awareness initiative to educate people about the importance of adequate protein consumption for better nutrition, health, and wellbeing.

G. Kishan Reddy Inaugurates a Conference on Indian Temple Architecture 'Devayatanam'

  • Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) of Ministry of Culture, Government of India organized a two-day international conference 'Devayatanam – An odyssey of Indian temple architecture on 25th – 26th February 2022 at Hampi, Karnataka. The Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER, G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the conference.
  • The conference aimed to deliberate upon the philosophical, religious, social, economic, technical, scientific, art and architectural aspects of the temple. It also intended to initiate a dialogue on the evolution and development of the various styles of temple architecture such as the Nagara, Vesara, Dravida, Kalinga and others.

Central Excise Day

  • Central Excise Day is observed on February 24 and it commemorates the Central Excise and Salt Act which was enacted on February 24, 1944. The annual event highlights the essential role played by the Central Excise Department in the industrial development of the country.
  • Central Excise Day honours the contribution of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to the country, the officers associated with it and their services. The day also encourages CBIC employees to carry out their duties with utmost sincerity as they have the responsibility of checking the corruption of goods from the manufacturing sector.

25th Meeting of Financial Stability and Development Council

  • The Financial Stability and Development Council's (FSDC) 25th meeting was held in Mumbai. This meeting was held under the chair of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • The council discussed the different mandates of the FSDC as well as important macro-financial concerns that have arisen as a result of certain domestic and global developments.
  • The council also stated that government, as well as other authorities, must keep a close watch on the financial operations and conditions of major financial institutions since this could expose financial vulnerabilities in the long and medium-term.
  • The council also talked about the steps that need to be taken to further expand the financial sector and ensure economic growth while maintaining macroeconomic stability.
  • The council also talked about currency management operational issues as well as noted the activities of the FSDC Sub-Committee, which is chaired by the RBI Governor, as well as the actions taken in response to previous FSDC judgments.
  • The government had set up the Financial Stability and Development Council in association with financial market regulators. This was done to institutionalize and strengthen the system for maintaining financial stability, improve inter-regulatory coordination, and promote financial sector development.

World Peace and Understanding Day

  • Celebrated on February 23, World Peace and Understanding Day is Rotary Club's birthday as well. With the motto to spread peace, the day is celebrated to remember that it is our world, and we collectively can make it a peaceful place to live. The name of the day signifies making a common ground for the people of the world to live with and have an understanding of love and respect for each other to build better human connections. It is focused on achieving goodwill, peace, and understanding among all people of the world.
  • World Peace and Understanding Day has a motto that stands for "Service above Self". The day is celebrated across the world with the thought of understanding amongst people and sharing life values to maintain peace and harmony.

World Thinking Day

  • World Thinking Day is celebrated on February 22 worldwide. It started in 1926 and has been celebrated by the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 150 countries every year.
  • The day is an opportunity to speak for the rights and needs of young women. It is also a way to raise funds to help the needy and deserving women. The day is celebrated by millions of young girls.
  • Back in 1926 at the fourth Girl Scout international conference, it was discussed that there is a need for a day where the girl scout can spread awareness worldwide for girl guides and girl scouts. Also, to appreciate and thank the other girl guides and girl scouts 'sisters'.
  • The theme of the day is decided by the team of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. The theme for World Thinking Day 2022 was "Our World: Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality."

World Scout Day

  • World Scout Day is celebrated on February 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts movement. Also known as Founder's Day, the day also marks the birth anniversary of his wife Olave Baden-Powell, who was also the World Chief Guide.
  • Baden-Powell established the Boy Scout movement in 1907. It has grown from a small group of boys in the United Kingdom to 57 million members in 172 countries. World Thinking Day is also celebrated on this date, and aims to raise funds for Girl Scout and Girl Guide organisations.
