World Day of Social Justice

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 each year, as declared by the United Nations. The UN reviewed the Declaration of Copenhagen and Programme of Action for Social Development on November 26, 2007, and later declared that right from the 63rd session of the General Assembly, February 20 will be observed as the World Day of Social Justice.
  • The theme for World Justice Day 2022 is 'Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment'. Around 60 per cent of the world's employed population, which include men, women and youth earn their livelihoods in the informal economy. These people often lack social protection and employee-related benefits.

'Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate'

  • Government's various science and technology organisations are celebrating Science and Technology achievements over the past 75 years as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • A week-long commemoration titled Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate is being held from 22nd to 28th February in 75 locations across the country.
  • A Science and Technology mega expo, and National Science Book Fair are being held in New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
  • The programme has been designed to inspire India's youth and help them navigate into building a progressive nation. 

International Mother Language Day

  • February 21 is celebrated as International Mother Language Day.
  • The day is dedicated to promote awareness of linguistic diversity and cultural unity. It also promotes multilingualism. The United Nations recognised this day in 2002, three years after it was first announced on 17 November 1999 by UNESCO.
  • It was the initiative of Bangladesh with the broader idea of preserving and protecting all the languages used by the people. It is said that out of 7000 languages spoken in the world, 2000 are spoken in India itself.
  • "Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities," is the theme of the International Mother Language Day 2022.

European Union-African Union Summit

  • The Sixth European Union-African Union Summit was held from 17th to 18th February 2022. This summit took place in Brussels, Belgium.
  • The event was scheduled for October 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed. The summit was co-chaired by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Macky Sall, President of Senegal, who was also the Chairperson of the African Union at the time.
  • Representatives from the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU), as well as their member states, attended the event. Despite being Africa's leading trade partner, the European Union is not seen as a major partner by African countries. This is according to a study which was done by the European Commission, with the United States and China ranking higher.

World Day of Social Justice

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 every year. The main objective of celebrating World Day of Social Justice is to raise a voice against social injustice and to bring the various communities internationally together to eliminate poverty, gender, and physical discrimination, illiteracy, religious discrimination to make a socially integrated society.
  • On 26 November 2007, the General Assembly declared that starting from the sixty-third session of the General Assembly, February 20 will be celebrated annually as the World Day of Social Justice.
  • The theme for World Day of Social Justice 2022 was "Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment".

World Pangolin Day

  • Every year, World Pangolin Day is celebrated on the "third (3rd) Saturday of February", in 2022, the annual World Pangolin Day was celebrated on February 19, 2022. It marked the 11th edition of the event.
  • The day aims to celebrate pangolins, raise awareness and recommit international N.G.O.s to the fight against the global capturing of pangolins in Africa and Asia.
  • An estimated one million of these wonderful animals have been, and continue to be, harvested from the wild in African and Asian countries to meet the high demands for their scale, skin, blood, and even fetuses that are believed to have several different uses both in fashion, traditional medicine, and cooking.

Rajnath Singh Reviews Preparations for 12 Edition DefExpo-2022 in Gujarat

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the preparations for the 12th edition of DefExpo-2022 which is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in March this year, informed the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
  • Singh also used the occasion to launch the DefExpo-2022 Mobile app. The app provides information on the exhibitors, schedule, speakers, venue maps, driving directions, publications as well as notifications to visitors and exhibitors.
  • DefExpo-2022 will be held between March 10-14, 2022 and will be held in a hybrid format featuring both physical and virtual stalls.
  • DefExpo is Asia's largest exhibition on land, naval, and homeland security systems. 930 exhibitors have registered for the event so far, with significant attendance of Foreign Defence Ministers as well.

Nirmala Sitharaman Participates in first G20 Finance Ministers, Central Bank Governors' Meeting

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in the first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' meeting under G20 Presidency of Indonesia. The Minister virtually joined sessions during the meeting and discussed current global economic issues and G20 priorities for 2022. The 17th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit will take place in November this year in Bali, Indonesia.
  • The G-20 financial gathering came as many economies are treading a precarious path between raising costs of borrowing to cool inflation and helping to support recoveries from the pandemic.

RBI Observe Financial Literacy Week

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) observed 'Financial Literacy Week' from February 14-18, 2022 in order to propagate financial education messages among the public across the country.
  • The theme for Financial Literacy Week 2022 was "Go Digital, Go Secure".
  • This theme is one of the strategic objectives of the National Strategy for Financial Education 2020-2025. The focus is on creating awareness about (a) Convenience of digital transactions; (b) Security of digital transactions; and (c) Protection of customers.

Maru Mahotsav or Jaisalmer Desert Festival Concludes

  • The renowned Jaisalmer Desert Festival, also known as Maru Mahotsav of the Golden City was held from February 13 to 16, 2022 at Pokaran village in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The four-day-long annual event started with a colorful grand procession followed by Miss Pokaran and Mister Pokran competitions. Regional folk dances such as Kalbelia, Kachhi Ghodi, Gair were performed.
  • Rajasthan Minority Affairs Minister, Shale Mohammad flagged off the event. The festival is celebrated amidst the beautiful dunes of the Thar Desert in the Sam dunes (42 kilometres from Jaisalmer).
