SN Rajeswari Becomes New CMD of Oriental Insurance Company

  • New India Assurance, General Manager, SN Rajeswari, has been selected as the Chairman and MD of the Oriental Insurance Company (OIC) by Banks Board Bureau (BBB).
  • Rajeswari is a qualified charted accountant and currently the second senior-most GM of the public sector general insurance industry and would be retiring in May 2022. She had started her career as an insurer with the Chennai base United India Insurance (UII) and was later shifted to NIA as a deputy general manager (DGM).
  • She will replace AV Girija Kumar.

Veteran Lyricist Yogesh Gaur Passed Away

  • Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur, known as Yogesh in the film industry, passed away. He was 77.
  • Yogesh wrote the lyrics of hit songs "Kahin duur jab din dhal jaye" and "Zindagi kaisi hai paheli" that defined the superhit film Anand (1971).
  • He worked with many prominent names including Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee.

PFC Board Clears R S Dhillon''s Appointment as CMD

  • State-run Power Finance Corporation (PFC) announced the appointment of Ravinder Singh Dhillon as Chairman and Managing Director from June 1, 2020 following superannuation of Rajeev Sharma.
  • He would hold the post till the date of his superannuation (May 31, 2023) or until further orders.
  • Dhillon is presently serving as Director (Projects) in the PFC and has more than 35 years of experience in various areas of the power sector.
  • An Electrical Engineer with post-graduation in Power Systems from IIT Delhi, he had worked with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and Central Electricity Authority prior to joining the PFC.

Capgemini COO Thierry Delaporte Becomes New Wipro CEO and MD

  • IT services major Wipro has appointed Capgemini Group veteran Thierry Delaporte as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, effective July 6, 2020.
  • In January 2020, the company had said its CEO and Managing Director Abidali Z Neemuchwala had decided to step down from the company.
  • Abidali Neemuchwala will relinquish his position as CEO and MD on June 1, 2020.
  • Rishad Premji will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company until July 5, 2020.

UK PM Appoints Indian-origin Academic as Natural History Museum Trustee

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed Indian-origin academic Yadvinder Malhi as a new Trustee of the Natural History Museum in London.
  • The 52-year-old expert will take on the unpaid advisory role for a period of four years until May 2024.
  • Malhi is a professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, Jackson Senior Research Fellow in Biodiversity and Conservation at Oriel College, Oxford, and the director of the Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests and the Oxford University Biodiversity Network.

Ajit Jogi, First Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Dies at 74

  • Ajit Jogi, who served as the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh after the formation of the state, died at 74.
  • Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi was an Indian politician, who served as the first chief minister of the state of Chhattisgarh, India.
  • He was a member of the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (INC) political party.
  • The Janta Congress Chhattisgarh political party was founded by Jogi, after he and his son Amit were expelled from the Indian National Congress due to anti-party activities as well as sabotaging an Antagarh by polls elections. Amit was expelled for six years.

JPMorgan's Kalpana Morparia Set to Retire, Leo Puri to Take Over

  •  Kalpana Morparia, chairman, South and Southeast Asia, JPMorgan, has announced her desire to retire from the American bank, after more than a decade at the helm.
  • She will stay on with the bank till the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2021 and oversee her succession.
  • Leo Puri, who was the managing director and chief executive of UTI Mutual Fund, will take charge as the new chairman of South and Southeast Asia of JPMorgan.
  • Puri had joined the struggling asset management company (AMC) in 2013 from Warburg Pincus India, where he was the managing director.
  • Puri stepped down from the AMC in 2018 after domestic investors State Bank of India (SBI), Life Insurance Corp. of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda, locked horns with the single largest investor, the US's T Rowe Price.

Zomato Elevates CEO of Food Delivery biz Mohit Gupta as Co-Founder

  • Online food delivery platform Zomato has elevated the CEO of its food delivery business, Mohit Gupta, to the position of co-founder.
  • The Ant Financial-backed firm now has four active co-founders: Deepinder Goyal, Gunjan Patidar, Gaurav Gupta and Mohit Gupta.
  • Pankaj Chaddah, who set up Zomato in 2008 with Goyal, quit the company after a ten-year stint. In 2019, he set up healthtech platform Mindhouse.

Noted Urdu Writer and Padma Shri Awardee Mujtaba Hussain Passed Away

  • Renowned Urdu writer and Padma Shri winner Mujtaba Hussain passed away in Hyderabad after suffering cardiac arrest.
  • Born on 15 July 1936, Mujtaba Hussain was known for his humorous writings and columns in Urdu newspapers and books.
  • Some of his notable works include his autobiographical satire titled Apne Yaad Mein, and his other writings like Urdu ke sheher urdu ke log, Behar hall, Safar lakht lakht and Mera Column.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007.

Brazil's Marcos Troyjo is NDB's New President

  • Marcos Prado Troyjo, former deputy economy minister of Brazil will replace KV Kamath as the president of the New Development Bank's (NDB), a multilateral financial institution set up to mobilise resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies.
  • The board of governors also appointed Anil Kishora, an Indian, as vice president of the NDB. Kishora, a banker, has 38 years of experience at India's largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI).
  • Before joining the NDB, he worked as the deputy managing director and chief risk officer of the state-run SBI.

Hong Kong's "King of Gambling", Stanley Ho Passed Away at 98

  •  Stanley Ho, one of the richest men in Asia, the head of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau(SJM) holdings and famously known as the Casino kingpin of Gambling Capital Macau passed away at the age of 98 at the Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.
  • He was born in 1921 in Hong Kong.
  • He was a member of the advisory body to the legislative the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Renowned Vocalist Shyamala Bhave Passes Away at 76

  • Noted Classical musician Shyamala G. Bhave, who was well versed in both the Hindustani and Carnatic styles passed away at the age of 79 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • She was born on March 14, 1941, in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • She was honoured with the title of 'Ubhayagaana Vidushi' (expert in both styles) by Sir M Visvesvaraya, the 19th Diwan of Mysore.
