West Bengal Education Department Wins Gold at Skoch Award

  • West Bengal school and higher education and tourism departments won the gold at Skoch Award.
  • Instituted in 2003, the Skoch Award recognizes efforts in digital, financial, social inclusion, governance, inclusive growth, technology and applications and corporate leadership.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, amongst other leaders, praised the recognition.

Jharkhand Foundation Day

  • November 15 marks the Jharkhand Foundation Day. The beautiful state that is located in the north-eastern part of India and is also called 'The land of forest' or 'Bushland'.
  • It was on November 15 in 2000 when the Chhotanagpur area was segregated from the southern half of Bihar to give rise to another state named Jharkhand. By doing so, the latter became the 28th Indian state.
  • Right now, the forests of Chhotanagpur plateau and Santhal Pargana make up Jharkhand. The tribals of this state had sought out a separate state for themselves long back as post-independence, the tribal people had got meagre socioeconomic advantages.
  • They formed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which continued to conduct protests and appeal to the government soon after India became independent in 1947. As a result, the government launched the Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council in 1995 and yielded to the demand in 2000.

World Diabetes Day

  • World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes mellitus and is held on 14 November each year.
  • Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), each World Diabetes Day focuses on a theme related to diabetes; type-2 diabetes is largely preventable and treatable non-communicable disease that is rapidly increasing in numbers worldwide.
  • World Diabetes Day was launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the rapid rise of diabetes around the world.
  • 'Access to Diabetes Care' was the theme for World Diabetes Day 2021.

World Kindness Day

  • World Kindness Day is an international observance on November 13. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of nations' kindness NGOs. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. Singapore observed the day for the first time in 2009. Italy and India also observed the day. In the UK, it is fronted by David Jamilly, who co-founded Kindness Day UK with Louise Burfitt-Dons.
  • The commemorations of World Kindness Day are based on a theme every year, and the theme of World Kindness Day 2021 was "The World we make- Inspire Kindness."

World Pneumonia Day

  • World Pneumonia Day is celebrated on November 12 every year. The day was first commemorated in the year 2009 with an aim to highlight the complications and issues related to Pneumonia. According to WHO, pneumonia is more severe in children less than 5 years of age and precautions must be taken to prevent the disease.
  • The theme for World Pneumonia Day 2021 was 'Stop Pneumonia / Every Breath Counts'.

World Usability Day

  • World Usability Day is observed annually on the second Thursday in November and this year (2021) it was celebrated on November 11. The purpose of the day is to raise standards so that technology works to harness human potential. The event brings communities together to celebrate how we can make our world easier for all.
  • The theme for World Usability Day 2021 was "Design of our Online World: Trust, Ethics, and Integrity."
  • This year's theme focuses on exploring online design systems that help us stay connected, learn, and grow in such transformational times. With the help of the theme, several important issues are addressed including Dark Patterns, and Ethical Design, Designing for Trust, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

National Education Day

  • Every year since 2008, India has celebrated the National Education Day on November 11 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the man of many talents — Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Union Education Minister of India.
  • In September of 2008, India's Ministry of Human Resource Development (now, known as the Ministry of Education) declared the birth anniversary of Abul Kalam Azad as the National Education Day.
  • Maulana Abul Kalam was a scholar, activist and leader of the Congress party. He served as the Education Minister for eleven years. As a freedom fighter, Azad was the leader of the Khilafat Movement and helped organise the non-co-operation movement in 1919. Azad was a follower of the Gandhian philosophy. He also served as the President of the Congress party in 1923 and then from 1940 to 1945. Maulana has authored several books including India Wins Freedom and Ghubar-e-Khatir.
