Mirza-Bopanna Ousted from Wimbledon Championships

  • Rohan Bopanna stayed solid with his service games and net play but Sania Mirza's serve was consistently put under pressure as the Indian team was ousted from the Wimbledon Championships following a three-set defeat in the stop-start mixed doubles third round.
  • The contest resumed with the 14th seed pair of Jean Julien-Roger and Andreja Klepac having a one-set lead and they finished on the right side of the result with a 6-3 3-6 11-9 scoreline.
  • Mirza has not played much competitive tennis post her comeback and is struggling to get her serve right.

World's 1st Solo Motorcycle Expedition Covering 18 Himalayan Passes

  • Mountain biker Kanchan Ugursandi finished in New Delhi the world's first solo motorcycle expedition covering 18 treacherous passes of northern Himalayan mountain ranges.
  • The month-long expedition witnessed many firsts by a solo woman rider. Miss Ugursandi has become the first solo woman biker to scale the Umlingla Pass, the first woman to cover the 18 passes and also the first woman to traverse a distance of 3,187 kilometre from New Delhi-Manali-Leh-Umlingla-Delhi in one go.
  • Her expedition was flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on June 11 from New Delhi.
  • Ugursandi traversed the distance in 25 days and crossed 18 passes to include the world's highest motorable Umlingla pass at 19,300 feet made by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

England Beat Denmark to Play Final against Italy

  • England reached its first major international tournament final after a gap of 55 years as the three lions registered a win against Denmark in the second semi-final of Euro 2020 at the Wembley Stadium, London. England will clash Italy in the final of the European Championship at the Wembley Stadium.

Italy Beats Spain in Penalty Shootout

  • In the first semifinal of Euro 2020, Italy continued its unbeaten run to defeat Spain 4-2 via penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium, London. Italy will play against the winner of the second semi-final which will be played between England and Denmark at Wembley.
  • Spain advanced to the last four beating Croatia 5-3 in extra time in the last 16, and then defeating Switzerland in a penalty shootout in which goalkeeper Unai Simon was the hero.

Thums Up Announces Worldwide Partnership with Tokyo Olympic Games

  • The Coca-Cola Company's home-grown soft drink brand, Thums Up, announced to become a worldwide partner at the Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo starting July 23.
  • This is probably the first time when a beverage firm from India is partnering with the Olympic Games.
  • As India enters its 100th year of participation at the Olympic Games, Thums Up aims to celebrate and salute the real heroes of the Olympic Games, athletes, who overcame tremendous odds to reach where they are today.
  • The Coca-Cola Company has a long history of sponsoring major sporting events, organisations and projects around the world.

Ons Jabeur Becomes First Arab Women to Enter Wimbledon Quarterfinals

  • Tunisian trailblazer Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals with a dazzling 5-7 6-1 6-1 victory over seventh seed Iga Swiatek. Jabeur lost four games in a row from a position of strength to concede the opening set but responded in sensational fashion to outplay last year's French Open champion.
  • The 26-year-old has now beaten three Grand Slam champions so far here, taking out five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams and Spain's Garbine Muguruza during her impressive run.
  • Jabeur will contest her second Grand Slam quarterfinal against Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka, having reached her first in Australia in 2020.

Mary Kom, Manpreet Singh to be India's Flag Bearers

  • Celebrated boxer M C Mary Kom and men's hockey team skipper Manpreet Singh will be flag bearers at opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.
  • One of India's biggest hopes, wrestler Bajrang Punia will be flag bearer at the closing ceremony on August 8.
  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has communicated the decision in this regard to the Organising Committee of the Games.

England into Euro 2020 Semifinals

  • Harry Kane scored twice and England overwhelmed Ukraine 4-0 to reach the European Championship semifinals.
  • It was the only match of Euro 2020 that England had to play away from Wembley Stadium and it was the team's most dominant performance of the tournament.
  • It marked the first time that England scored four goals in the knockout stage of a major tournament since beating West Germany 4-2 in the 1966 World Cup final.
  • England now goes back to London to face Denmark. The Danes beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in Baku.
  • The last time England made it to the last four of the European Championship was in 1996.

Mariyappan Thangavelu Named Flag-bearer for Tokyo Paralympics

  • Top para high-jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu was named the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent in the Tokyo Paralympics, which begins on August 24.
  • Thangavelu, who is defending the T-42 gold he had won in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, was picked for the honour by the executive committee of the national body.
  • Thangavelu, who was conferred with the Khel Ratna, the country's highest sporting award, last year is one of the 24 para-athletes picked by the selection committee for the Tokyo Paralympics.

Norway's Karsten Warholm Sets World Record in Men's 400 m Hurdles

  • Norway's Karsten Warholm broke Kevin Young's 29-year-old 400 m hurdles world record when he completed the race in 46.70 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo.
  • Warholm beat 1992 Olympic champion Young's mark of 46.78secs, which was set four years before the Norwegian was born and was the longest-standing record in men's track.

Mithali Raj Becomes Highest Run-getter in Women's Cricket across Formats

  • Indian women's cricket team skipper Mithali Raj became the top run-getter in international cricket across all formats, surpassing former England batter Charlotte Edwards.
  • Mithali struck a boundary over England pace bowler Natalie Sciver's head when on 11 to go past the 10,273 runs scored by Charlotte. The boundary helped Mithali get to 10,277 runs.
  • The bulk of Mithali's runs have come in ODI cricket in which she has collected over 7,200 runs. She has scored 669 runs in Test cricket and 2,364 in T20 International cricket.
  • She is the only woman cricketer to have scored over 6,000 runs and averages over 50 in ODI cricket. Charlotte is the next best in the list of ODI run-getters with 5,992 runs.
