'Neeraj' to be Mascot for the First ever 'Kerala Olympic Games'

  • A rabbit mascot named Neeraj, in honour of Neeraj Chopra, the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, will be the symbol for the first ever 'Kerala Olympic Games', slated to be held in February 2022.
  • State Education Minister V Sivankutty unveiled the mascot.
  • The meet will be conducted on 24 disciplines which includes athletics, aquatics, archery, basketball, boxing, badminton, cycling, football, wrestling, hockey, judo, karate, kambadi (Kabadi), KHO- KHO, netball, rugby, rifles (shooting), wushu, tennis, table tennis, Taekwondo, volleyball & weight lifting.
  • Ahead of the Games, district games will be held in all 14 districts and athletes and teams selected from this level will participate in the Kerala Olympics Games.

India among World's Top Three Dope Violators in Latest

  • An uptick in the number of offenders has taken India into the top-three of the world's biggest doping violators in a WADA report detailing the transgressions for the year 2019 with bodybuilding, weightlifting and athletics contributing majorly to the country's embarrassing record.
  • In the latest report published by the World Anti-Doping Agency, 152 (17 per cent of the world total) Anti-doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) were reported in India in 2019, leaving it third in the list with the maximum dope offenders coming from bodybuilding (57).
  • A lightweight in global sport, India is only behind Russia (167) and Italy (157), while Brazil (78) is at fourth and Iran (70) fifth.

Sindhu Appointed BWF's Athletes' Commission Member

  • India's two-time Olympic medallist shuttler P. V. Sindhu was appointed as a member of the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) Athletes' Commission.
  • The former world champion was named alongside five others who will serve as members till 2025.
  • The other five are Iris Wang (USA), Robin Tabeling (NED), Greysia Polii (INA), Kim Soyeong (KOR) and Zheng Si Wei (CHN).

Emma Raducanu is BBC Sports Personality of the Year

  • US Open champion Emma Raducanu was voted the BBC's sports personality of the year to cap an incredible rise throughout 2021.
  • Raducanu became the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles title with her triumph in New York in September after not dropping a set in the tournament.
  • She was the first British woman since Virginia Wade in 1977 to win a major tournament, enabling her to beat Olympic gold medalists — diver Tom Daley and swimmer Adam Peaty — to the BBC honour.

Kidambi Srikanth Wins Silver Medal at Badminton World Championships

  • Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian man to win a silver medal at the BWF World Championships.
  • Singapore's Loh Kean Yew defeated Kidambi in the summit clash.
  • This is the first time that a men's player from Singapore won gold at the BWF World Championships.
  • Srikanth created history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to enter the final in the men's singles category of the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain.

India Lose Seat on FIA World Motor Sport Council

  • India lost its seat on the FIA's all powerful World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) for the first time in more than three decades.
  • Incumbent Gautam Singhania lost in the elections held for 14 WMSC seats reserved for titular members. The development came on the day when Mohammed Ben Sulayem replaced Jean Todt as the next FIA president.
  • The WMSC members also include the president, deputy president and seven vice-presidents.

Anurag Thakur Inaugurates Khelo India Women's Hockey League Under 21

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur inaugurated the first-ever national level Khelo India Women's Hockey League (Under 21) at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. Sports Minister was joined by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Nishith Pramanik and the Indian Olympic Association President Narendra Batra and other dignitaries. The league held a cash prize of Rs. 30 lakh for the winners, 15 lakh from MYAS and 15 lakh from Hockey India.
  • A total of 14 teams competed in the first phase of the tournament. As many as 42 matches were played during the first phase, while the second and third phases will be held early next year.
