Sergio Aguero Announces Retirement from Football

  • Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero announced his immediate retirement for health reasons.
  • Aguero is one of the world's most well-known players, having only joined Barcelona in the offseason after ending a 10-year stint at Manchester City during which he became a great of the English game.
  • For Argentina, Aguero scored 41 times in 97 matches — putting him third on the national team's all-time scoring list — after making his senior team debut in 2006. That came between two world titles for Argentina's youth teams.
  • Aguero's only major title with Argentina came at this year's edition of the Copa America, in which he barely featured, and he also won the Olympic gold medal in Beijing in 2008.

Jay Shah Launches HAP Cup for Players with Special Needs

  • BCCI secretary Jay Shah launched the second edition of the HAP Cup, the biggest tournament for the physically challenged in India.
  • The HAP Cup has been scheduled at the Tau Devilal Cricket Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana from December 28 to 31.
  • Every year HAP Cup is organised by the Physically Challenged Cricket Association of India (PCCAI) to spread the message of positivity and happiness among the physically challenged players in the country.

India Wins Six Medals at Asian Rowing Championship

  • India won a total of six medals, including two gold and 4 silver medals in the Asian Rowing Championship in Thailand. Senior rower Arvind Singh bagged a gold in the lightweight Men's single sculls event, while his compatriots won three silver medals. India bagged silver medals in Men's Lightweight Double Sculls, Men's Quadrapul Sculls and in Men's Coxless Four. In Lightweight Men's Double Sculls, India's Ashish Phugat and Sukhjinder Singh won the silver.

Pakistan Becomes First Team to win 18 T20Is in a Calendar Year

  • After beating the two-time T20 World Cup champions West Indies in the first T20I at Karachi, Pakistan became the first side to win 18 T20Is in a calendar year, breaking their own record of 17 victories which they achieved in the year 2018. The Men in Green are in supreme form in the T20I format as they have now won ten of their last 11 T20Is, losing that one crucial semi-final against Australia in the T20 World Cup 2021.
  • Out of 27 T20Is in 2021, the Babar Azam-led side has lost only six matches and three games were abandoned this year. The Asian giants have been a dominant force in the shortest international format as they are also the only team with over 100 wins since the inception of this format.

Simone Biles is Time's 2021 Athlete of the Year

  • Simone Biles was named Time's 2021 Athlete of the Year.
  • The world's most decorated gymnast was hailed for putting her mental health first when she withdrew from four event finals at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Biles, a four-time Olympic medalist, later revealed that she suffered from what gymnasts called "the twisties - when you lose the sense of space and dimension in the air.
  • Despite the setback, the 24-year-old managed to earn a team all-around silver and a bronze in balance beam at the Tokyo Games.
  • Simone Arianne Biles is an American artistic gymnast. With a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is tied as the most decorated gymnast of all time.

Norway's Magnus Carlsen Wins FIDE World Chess Championship

  • Reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defended his title and won the FIDE World Championship in Dubai. He beat Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, securing the one point he needed to cross the seven-point threshold to win the global tournament held at Dubai's Expo 2020 this month in the United Arab Emirates. Carlsen clinched his fifth world championship title. Carlsen wins 60% of the 2 million-euro prize offered by the championship.

Virat Kohli has been Removed as India's One-day International Captain

  • Virat Kohli has been removed as India's one-day international captain because selectors did not want two white-ball skippers, says Indian cricket board (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly.
  • Kohli, 33, was replaced by Twenty20 captain Rohit Sharma, 34.
  • Rohit took over as T20 skipper last month after Kohli stepped down following the World Cup.
  • The BCCI said selectors had "decided" Rohit should take over as ODI captain without giving reasons.
  • Former India captain Ganguly said that the BCCI had asked Kohli not to step down as T20 captain, but revealed that he did not want to continue.

India's S Bidyarani Devi wins Silver at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent

  • S Bidyarani Devi won silver at the women's 55kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • Devi lifted a total of 198kg (84114) to finish second behind Nigeria's Adijat Olarinoye who had an effort of 203kg (90113) in the Commonwealth Championships.
  • However, as per Commonwealth Championship rule, she would also get a gold having lifted the highest weight in the clean and jerk category with her 114kg effort. Devi missed a bronze in the World Championships as she finished fourth behind Ghofrane Belkhir of Tunisia, Olarinoye, and Svitlana Samuliak of Ukraine.
  • The World Championships and the Commonwealth Championships are being held simultaneously in Tashkent. The gold winners in each category in the Commonwealth Championships qualify directly for next year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
