Ash Barty Wins Drought-breaking Australian Open Title

  • Ash Barty has won the Australian Open final 6-3, 7-6 (2) over Danielle Collins to end a 44-year drought for Australian women at their home Grand Slam tournament.
  • Barty is the first Australian woman into the singles final of the Australian Open since Wendy Turnbull in 1980 and is now the first Australian champion since Chris O'Neil in 1978.
  • Barty now has major titles on three surfaces, adding the hard court at Melbourne Park to her win on grass at Wimbledon last year and on clay at the French Open in 2019.

Australian Cricket Awards 2022: Mitchell Starc Wins Allan Border Medal

  • Senior pacer Mitchell Starc claimed his maiden Allan Border medal while Ashleigh Gardner became the first indigenous person to win the Belinda Clarke award, the top two honours at Cricket Australia (CA) Awards. Starc was honoured for his strong performance in all three formats of the game. He is only the fifth bowler in 22 years to win the award.
  • Gardener also bagged the recognition for the first time. She is the first indigenous player to clinch the top gong in Australian women's cricket. The awards were decided by a voting process for the period 2021-22. The award winners were decided by votes from players, umpires, and media representatives throughout the year. The announcement came during the lunch break of the ongoing women's Ashes Test.

Women's Asia Cup Hockey: India Clinches Bronze

  • India defeated China 2-0 to win a consolation bronze medal at the Women's Hockey Asia Cup.
  • Japan defeated South Korea and won the gold at the Women's Hockey Asia Cup.
  • South Korea and Japan have won the most titles with 3.

Australian Open: Mladenovic, Dodic Win Mixed Doubles Championship

  • Kristina Mladenovic of France and Ivan Dodig of Croatia defeated Australian players Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler to win the mixed doubles championship.
  • Mladenovic also won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open in 2014 with Daniel Nestor and has two women's doubles titles in 2018 and 2020 in Australia among her five major women's doubles titles.
  • Dodig has three other Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and two in men's doubles, including last year's Australian Open title with Filip Polek.

Asian Games 2022

  • The 2022 Asian Games will take place from September 10 to September 25, 2022, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China and there will be five co-host cities.
  • The multi-sporting event will feature 40 sports with a total of 61 disciplines, including Olympic sports like swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, equestrian, fencing, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, and much more.
  • E-sports and breakdancing will debut in the 2022 Asian Games as full medal sports after being approved by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) this year, while Cricket will be back at Asian Games in T20 format to raise the excitement of the viewers.

Ladakh Team Wins 9th Women National Ice Hockey Championship 2022

  • The women's team from Ladakh lifted the 9th National Women's Ice Hockey Championship in Himachal Pradesh. The championship was organised by the Ice Hockey Association of India at Kaza area in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. A total of six teams participated in the championship from Delhi, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Telangana and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Malinga is Specialist Bowling Coach for SL's Australia Tour

  • Legendary pacer Lasith Malinga was appointed as a specialist bowling coach for Sri Lanka's senior men's national team's upcoming tour of Australia.
  • Malinga, in his new short-term role as a specialist coach, will support Sri Lanka's bowlers, providing tactical insight and technical expertise to help the on-field execution of strategic plans.
  • Sri Lanka is scheduled to play five T20 Internationals in Australia starting from February 11.
  • The former player, one of the island nation's greatest fast bowlers, has worked as a mentor for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League in 2018.

Babar Azam Named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year

  • Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was named ICC ODI Men's Cricketer of the Year following his exploits in 2021 when he scored 405 runs in six games at an average of 67.50.
  • He was the second-highest run-scorer with 228 runs and was the Player of the Match in both of Pakistan's wins in the 2-1 series victory against South Africa.
  • South Africa umpire Marais Erasmus was named the Umpire of the Year for the third time after receiving the honour in 2016 and 2017.
  • On top of the T20 World Cup final, Erasmus oversaw 20 international fixtures across the three formats in 2021.

Lucknow IPL Team to be Called Lucknow Super Giants

  • The Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League will be called Lucknow Super Giants after its owners announced the name chosen by its fans. The official IPL team of Lucknow, owned by RPSG Group, decided to take public opinions from its fans and the name was shared by owner Sanjiv Goenka.
  • Last year, the franchise was purchased by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned of the RPSG group for an amount of Rs. 7090 crore. The other new team to enter the competition is from Ahmedabad which was bought by the Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) for Rs. 5635 crore.
