Babar Azam Named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year

  • Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was named ICC ODI Men's Cricketer of the Year following his exploits in 2021 when he scored 405 runs in six games at an average of 67.50.
  • He was the second-highest run-scorer with 228 runs and was the Player of the Match in both of Pakistan's wins in the 2-1 series victory against South Africa.
  • South Africa umpire Marais Erasmus was named the Umpire of the Year for the third time after receiving the honour in 2016 and 2017.
  • On top of the T20 World Cup final, Erasmus oversaw 20 international fixtures across the three formats in 2021.

Lucknow IPL Team to be Called Lucknow Super Giants

  • The Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League will be called Lucknow Super Giants after its owners announced the name chosen by its fans. The official IPL team of Lucknow, owned by RPSG Group, decided to take public opinions from its fans and the name was shared by owner Sanjiv Goenka.
  • Last year, the franchise was purchased by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned of the RPSG group for an amount of Rs. 7090 crore. The other new team to enter the competition is from Ahmedabad which was bought by the Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) for Rs. 5635 crore.

Root Named ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021

  • England captain Joe Root was named as the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021. Root beat stiff competition from New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson, Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne and India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to clinch the award.

Hossein Vafaei Becomes First Iranian to Win a Snooker Ranking Title

  • Hossein Vafaei became the first Iranian player to win a ranking title, beating Mark Williams in the final of the Snooker Shoot Out.
  • Vafaei won the one-frame final with a break of 71 and dedicated the victory to his late grandmother.
  • It's a big achievement for a country like Iran. Nobody knew about snooker before. Now they know.
  • Wales' Williams, the three-time world champion, only got the chance to play one shot in the final with world number 42 Vafaei sinking a tricky, long red after the break-off.

Smriti Mandhana is ICC women's ODI Cricketer of the Year

  • India women cricket team opener Smriti Mandhana has been declared as the ICC women's ODI cricketer for the year 2021. Mandhana tallied 855 runs in 22 internationals at an impressive average of 38.86 with one century and five half-centuries.
  • Despite India enduring a difficult 2021, Mandhana's stock continued to rise this year. In the limited-overs series against South Africa where India won just two of the eight matches at home, Mandhana played a major role in both of the wins. She made 80 not out as India chased down 158 in the second ODI that helped them level the series and scored 48 not out in the win in the final T20I.

Sindhu Wins Syed Modi International Badminton Title

  • Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu eased past young compatriot Malvika Bansod in straight games to win her second women's singles title at the Syed Modi International badminton tournament.
  • Playing in a depleted field due to multiple Covid-19 cases, top seed Sindhu hardly broke her sweat to get past Bansod 21-13 21-16 in a lop-sided title clash.
  • It was former world champion Sindhu's second Syed Modi title after having annexed the BWF World Tour Super 300 event in 2017.

ICC ODI Men's Team of The Year: After T20s, No Indians in this One Too

  • After going unrepresented in the ICC's men's 'T20 Team of the Year' due to a disastrous World Cup campaign in the UAE, no Indian player featured in the global body's 'ODI Team of the Year' which features two players from minnows Ireland.
  • Incidentally, the team also doesn't have any Australia, English, New Zealand or West Indies players.
  • The team, which has Pakistan's Babar Azam as its captain, has two Pakistanis including Fakhar Zaman.
  • South Africans Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen, Bangladeshis Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahaman and Mushfiqur Rahim, who is also the designated wicketkeeper, Sri Lankans Wanindu Hasaranga and Dishmantha Chameera along with Irishmen Paul Stirling and Simi Singh form the rest of the squad.

Sharma, Pant and Ashwin Included in ICC Men's Test Team of the Year

  • India opener Rohit Sharma, wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin were included in the ICC Men's Test team of the year for 2021.
  • New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been given the charge of captaining the eleven which also has his countryman and Player of the Match in the inaugural World Test Championship final, Kyle Jamieson, as well.
  • Apart from three Indians and two New Zealanders, England captain Joe Root, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne, and Pakistani trio of Fawad Alam, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi are in the eleven as well.
  • It is Ashwin's fifth appearance and Pant's second time in the Test team of the year honours while it is the first time Sharma is in the coveted eleven of Test cricket.

Sania Mirza Reveals Retirement Plans

  • Trailblazing India tennis star Sania Mirza announced that she will hang up her racquet at the end of 2022 season.
  • Winner of six Grand Slam titles, including three mixed doubles trophies, Sania will retire as India's most accomplished woman tennis player.
  • She made the retirement announcement after losing the Australian Open women's doubles first round with partner Nadiia Kichenok. They lost to Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek and Kaja Juvan.
