India Hosts Indian Ocean Region Defence Ministers' Conclave

  • India hosted the Indian Ocean Region- IOR Defence Ministers' Conclave in 2021. The event took place on the sidelines of Aero India 2021.
  • According to the release by Defence Ministry, the theme of the Indian Ocean Region Defence Ministers' Conclave is 'Enhanced Peace, Security, and Cooperation in the Indian Ocean'.
  • The Indian Ocean Region Defence Ministers' Conclave is an initiative to promote dialogue in an economic, institutional, and cooperative environment that can help in fostering the development of stability, peace, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region.

International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation

  • International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day that takes place on February 6 as part of the UN's efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation. It was first introduced in 2003.
  • One of the beliefs in support for this day acknowledges that culture is in "constant flux," and with the concerns begetting FGM being so high-risk, the abolition of such practices must be prompt. This is a movement for the rights of women and their bodies, as well as the protection of their physical health- which can be tremendously affected later in life. These efforts are to benefit actions fighting violence against women and girls as a whole. Every Woman, Every Child (a global movement), reports that "Although primarily concentrated in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East, FGM is a universal problem and is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America.

International Day of Human Fraternity

  • In December, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 4th February as International Day of Human Fraternity.
  • The resolution was the outcome of Christian-Muslim cooperation to promote peace and intercultural dialogue in the world.
  • "The General Assembly, acting without a vote, adopted three resolutions and one decision today, including one calling for a further comprehensive review of United Nations peace building in 2025 and another proclaiming 4th February as the International Day of Human Fraternity," states the United Nations website.
  • International Day of Human Fraternity aims to underline the importance of raising awareness about different cultures and religions, or beliefs, and the promotion of tolerance.
  • It also aims to educate people that tolerance, pluralistic tradition, mutual respect, and the diversity of religions and beliefs promote human fraternity.
  • The day is to be observed each year, beginning in 2021. 

World Cancer Day

  • World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 4. It is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. 
  • World Cancer Day originated in 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer, which was held in Paris. The Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.
  • Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations, and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship -- in the streets and online -- acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of cancer.
  • The theme for World Cancer Day 2021 is 'I Am and I Will.' This year is a reminder of the enduring power of cooperation and collective action.

Nitin Gadkari to Inaugurate Webinar Series on Road Safety

  • Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate a webinar series on road safety on February 9 with a focus on reducing fatalities in road accidents in the country.
  • The webinar series being organised by the India chapter of the International Road Federation (IRF) focuses on reducing the road fatalities in the country by half by 2030.
  • Total 12 webinars titled "Road Safety Challenges in India & Preparation of an Action Plan" will be held through the year.

PM Modi to Inaugurate Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 'Chauri Chaura' centenary celebrations at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh via video conferencing.
  • The day marks the beginning of the 100th year of the 'Chauri Chaura' incident, a landmark event in the country's fight for independence.
  • The centenary celebrations and various events planned by the state government will begin in all 75 districts of the state from February 4, 2021 and will continue till February 4, 2022.

World Wetlands Day

  • World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2nd February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2nd February 1971.
  • This year (2021) is the 50th anniversary of Ramsar Convention.
  • Each year a theme is selected to focus attention and help raise public awareness about the value of wetlands. Countries organize a variety of events to raise awareness such as; lectures, seminars, nature walks, children's art contests, sampan races, community clean-up days, radio and television interviews, letters to newspapers, to the launch of new wetland policies, new Ramsar Sites and new programs at the national level.
  • The 2021 theme is 'Wetlands and Water'.

Smriti IRANI Inaugurates 8th India International Silk Fair

  • Textiles Minister Smriti Irani inaugurated the 8th India International Silk Fair on Virtual Portal. The fair is considered to be India's biggest silk fair, being held under one roof on Indian Silk Export Promotion Council's virtual platform. The five days event is being held virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Irani said that more than 200 overseas buyers have already registered and equal number of their representatives in India will be interacting with more than 100 renowned and big Indian companies manufacturing and trading silk and silk blended products. She called upon the exhibitors and overseas buyers to take part in this initiative to celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of Indian silk.
  • India has a long history of silk production and is the 2nd largest producer of Silk. India is the only country in the world which produces all the four major varieties of silk - Mulberry, Eri, Tassar, and Muga.
