World Radio Day

  • Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD).
  • Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse.
  • At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a society's experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations. 
  • This year, UNESCO called on radio stations to join the celebration of the 10th anniversary of World Radio Day with the theme 'New World, New Radio'. 

First India Toy Fair

  • The first India Toy Fair will be held virtually from February 27 to March 2.
  • The website for the India Toy Fair 2021 which was launched will enable children, parents, teachers, exhibitors, etc. to register themselves to participate in the virtual fair which will showcase various facets of the Indian toy ecosphere.
  • According to officials, it is the first ever digitally accessible exhibition and platform which will provide an opportunity to explore and buy a variety of toys from over 1,000 exhibitors across states and union territories, and participate in insightful webinars, panel discussions and activities, and network with various stakeholders from the toy industry.

Five-day National Horticulture Fair Begins in Bengaluru

  • This year's edition of the five-day national horticulture fair organized by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) began at the Institute's Hessarghatta campus on the outskirts of Bengaluru city.
  • The country's premier horticulture fair, being held both in physical and virtual formats for the first time, showcases cutting edge technologies, crop varieties, pest and disease management practices and processing methods among others.
  • The fair, is being held under the theme 'For start-up and stand-up India' aims to increase farmers' incomes by turning horticulture into a business enterprise especially in the wake of the recent trend of educated youth taking to farming. 

14th International Children's Film Festival Concludes in Bangladesh

  • The 14th International Children's Film Festival of Bangladesh (ICFFB) came to an end in Dhaka. 179 films from 37 countries were shown at various venues during the 7-day-long festival organized by the Children's Film Society (CFS) of Bangladesh. Apart from Bangladesh, films from India, Armenia, US, UK, Ireland, Japan and China among others were shown in the course of the festival.
  • Dutch Film Jackie and Oopjen was awarded the Best International Feature Film Award. The Best Director award went to Ani Oganesyan for his film Stork's Nest from Armenia. A total of 12 awards were presented to the winners at the concluding ceremony.
  • Bangladeshi film Maati got The Young Talent Award while Lottery won the Special mention under the Young Talent Award.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

  • The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is on 11th February, by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on 22 December 2015. The day recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. 
  • The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is implemented by UNESCO and UN Women, in collaboration with intergovernmental agencies and institutions, as well as civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. The day's purpose is to promote full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls.
  • Against this backdrop, this year's celebration of the Day addresses the theme "Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19" and gathers together experts working in fields related to the pandemic from different parts of the world.

World Pulses Day

  • World Pulses Day as the name suggests is a day dedicated to the importance of pulses. This day is observed on February 10 of every year. This year the theme of the day is "Nutritious Seeds for a Sustainable Future." It is a well-known fact that pulses have highly nutritious properties and are a very important part of a healthy diet for humans. However, a large number of people do not have access to this nutritious food item while some are unaware of its health benefits. In order to increase both awareness and access to pulses, the United Nations in 2018 decided to dedicate a day to pulses.
  • Apart from that, World Pulses Day also comes under the second goal of the United Nations i.e. "Zero Hunger." Moreover, the day also covers objectives mentioned in the United Nations Agenda 2030.

PM Modi to inaugurate World Sustainable Development Summit 2021

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021.
  • The theme of the Summit is 'Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all'.
  • The 20th edition of The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) flagship event, the World Sustainable Development Summit, will be held online from February 10 to February 12 and will bring together a wide number of governments, business leaders, academicians, climate scientists, youth, and the civil society in the fight against climate change.

TERI to Organise World Sustainable Development Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021 on February 10 video conferencing.
  • "The theme of the Summit is 'Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all."
  • The 20th edition of The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) flagship event, the World Sustainable Development Summit, will be held online from February 10-12, 2021.
  • The Summit will bring together a wide number of governments, business leaders, academicians, climate scientists, youth, and the civil society in the fight against climate change.
  • India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Ministry of Earth Sciences are key partners of the Summit.
