International Nurses Day

  • International Nurses Day is an international day observed around the world on 12 May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) of each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.
  • The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.[2] In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurses' Day"; he did not approve it.
  • In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere. As of 1998, 8 May was designated as annual National Student Nurses' Day.
  • The theme for the 2021 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead - A Vision for Future Healthcare.

National Technology Day

  • National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11 to highlight the achievements of engineers and scientists in the field of technology and science. The day acts as a reminder of the country's technological advancements. It was first observed on May 11, 1999, and aims to commemorate the scientific and technological achievements of Indian scientists and engineers.
  • National Technology Day holds great importance because on this particular day in 1998, India achieved multiple notable technological progressions. Every year since 1999, the Technology Development Board (TDB) commemorates the day by honouring technological innovations that have added to the national growth.
  • Every year, the Technology Development Board (TDB) selects a theme for each year's event, this year the theme of the National Technology Day 2021 theme is "Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future".

Victory Day

  • The second world war was the deadliest conflict in human history, which saw 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the USSR and China. The Soviet Union alone lost up to 27 million people in the war, nearly 13% of the population at the time.
  • On May 9th Russia and a handful of former Soviet Union republics celebrate Victory Day, which marks the day after Nazi Germany surrendered and Soviet forces took control of Berlin, bringing the second world war (also referred to as 'The Great Patriotic War' in Russia) in Europe to an end.
  • Victory day is about remembering those who gave their lives to achieve the victory.

  • Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May to honour mothers and the invaluable role they play in our lives.
  • The modern holiday began in the United States, at the initiative of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century, who organized the first Mother's Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, which serves as the International Mother's Day Shrine today.

World Red Cross Day

  • World Red Cross Day is also known as Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8 every year. This date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who is the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He is also a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was born on May 8, 1828.
  • It is an annual celebration of their principles. The day is celebrated by the Red Cross society across all the countries. It works for the welfare of people. World Red Cross Society provides for food shortages, natural disasters, wars as well as diseases of an epidemic.
  • The theme of World Red Cross Day 2021 is 'Together we are unstoppable'!
  • The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948. In 1946 in World War II, the Tokyo proposal was put into effect.
