Shangri-La Dialogue Summit in Singapore Cancelled

The Shangri-La Dialogue Asian security summit that was due to be held in Singapore next month has been cancelled, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including on the host country.
This year's event, which is arranged by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), had been scheduled to take place from June 4–5.
The event has typically attracted top level military officials, diplomats and weapons makers from around the globe since its launch in 2002.
The global COVID-19 situation has recently deteriorated, with the rise of infectious new virus variants, IISS said.

International Day for Biological Diversity

The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations–sanctioned international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22.
International Day for Biological Diversity is observed to raise and create awareness about biodiversity issues. The theme of the day for 2021 is, "We're part of the solution #ForNature."

National Endangered Species Day

National Endangered Species Day is celebrated each year on the third Friday of May across the country. This year (2021), National Endangered Species Day has been observed on May 21. The day helps us review how many animal species are under the threat of extinction and how the drastic effects of climate change are disturbing the once peaceful ecosystem.
All the living things on the Earth are connected- the loss of one species often triggers the loss of others. Hence, to raise awareness about the endangered species of flora and fauna every year National Endangered Species Day is observed.

National Anti-terrorism Day

National Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on May 21 in India every year. The objective behind the observance of this day is to wean away from the youth from terrorism and the cult of violence by highlighting the suffering of common people and showing how it is prejudicial to the national interest.
It was on this day in the year 1991 that former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. This year commemorates Rajiv Gandhi's 30th death anniversary as India observes Anti-Terrorism Day.
It is proposed by MHA that the 'Anti-Terrorism Pledge" may be taken solemnly by the Officials in their rooms/offices itself, keeping in view the safety of participants and organisers and to avoid public gatherings.
The official announcement of National Anti Terrorism Day was made after the assassination of India's seventh Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991. He was killed in Tamil Nadu in a campaign by a terrorist. Then, under the V.P. Singh government, the center has decided to observe 21st May as Anti Terrorism Day. On this day Anti Terrorism pledge is taken in all the government offices, public sector undertakings, and other public institutions, etc.

World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is an event occurring on 20 May celebrating the International System of Units. The date is the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. Metrology is the study of measurement. The World Metrology Day project is currently realized jointly by the BIPM and the OIML.
The theme for World Metrology Day 2021 is Measurement for Health.
This theme was chosen to create awareness of the important role measurement plays in health, and thus in the wellbeing of every one of us.

World Economic Forum Cancels 2021 Annual Meeting

The World Economic Forum cancelled its 2021 annual meeting scheduled for Singapore in three months' time, saying it was not possible to hold such a large, global event due to the COVID-19 situation.
WEF had already pushed back its special meeting in Singapore, initially scheduled for mid-May, following the announcement last year it was moving from its usual home in the Swiss Alps due to the pandemic situation in Europe.
Acknowledging WEF's decision to cancel the event, the Singapore trade ministry said that it fully appreciates the challenges caused by the ongoing global pandemic, particularly for a large meeting with a broad span of international participants.
The WEF's next annual meeting will instead take place in the first half of 2022. Its location and date will be determined based on an assessment of the situation later this summer.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

World AIDS vaccine day is observed each year on May 18 across the globe. The day is commemorated to recognize the efforts of thousands of scientists and health professionals who are tirelessly working to find a vaccine against the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The day is also addressed as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, which is aimed at increasing awareness regarding the need for HIV vaccines to prevent the spread of HIV infection and AIDS.
World AIDS Vaccine Day is a day to honour those healthcare workers, scientists, and volunteers who have contributed their lives in order to obtain an effective and safe AIDS vaccine. The day was celebrated in May 1998 for the first time after President Bill Clinton gave a speech at Morgan State University in 1997 where he stated that a vaccine was the only way to limit the spread and eventually wipe out HIV.
