Second BRICS Sherpas' Meeting Convened

  • The second BRICS Sherpas' and Sous Sherpas' meeting was conducted to discuss preparations for scheduled meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers on 1st June.
  • The BRICS Sherpas' and Sous Sherpas meeting was convened under India's Chair-ship from 25th to 28th of May. During the meeting BRICS partners negotiated key deliverables for India's char-ship at BRICS 2021. They also negotiated including outcome documents for Foreign Ministers' meeting.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

  • The United Nations has designated 29 May as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The day aims to celebrate the contributions of civilian and uniformed personnel who perform the task of peacekeeping for the organisation.
  • According to the official website, 130 UN peacekeepers lost their lives last year and 4,000 have died since 1948, when the UN peacekeeping mission began.
  • In 1948, the UN sent its first peacekeeping mission called the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) which started functioning in Palestine.
  • UNTSO started its operation in Palestine on 29 May. Therefore, this day was selected as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
  • The theme of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2021 is "The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security".

International Everest Day

  • International Everest Day 2021 is celebrated on May 29 every year. This day is observed in the memory of the first summit of Mount Everest by New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay Sherpa that took place on May 29, 1953. They climbed Mount Everest on this day.
  • They were the first humans to scale the height of Mount Everest. In 2008, Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day after Sir Edmund Hillary died. Since then, every year, Mount Everest Day is celebrated with processions, memorial and special events in Kathmandu, Nepal, and the Everest region.

International Day of Action for Women's Health

  • International Day of Action for Women's Health or International Women's Health Day is a day dedicated to women in order to spread awareness about women's right to health. The special day is observed globally on May 28 every year by women and health groups. The International Women's Health Day came into existence in 1987 and the government of South Africa officially recognized it in 1987.
  • International Day of Action for Women's Health is being coordinated by the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) which was founded in 1984.

World Hunger Day

  • World Hunger Day is observed globally on 28 May every year. The objective of this day is to raise awareness about more than 820 million people living in chronic hunger worldwide. It is observed since 2011 to not only spread awareness about the malaise of chronic hunger but also to solve hunger and poverty through sustainable undertakings.
  • The initiative recognizes the dire need to save nearly a quarter of a billion lives from malnourishment and chronic hunger. The need to provide outreach globally during the pandemic for the distribution of food is seen as paramount to save those who have been vulnerable even in pre-pandemic times.
  • World Hunger Day is an initiative by The Hunger Project, first started in the year 2011. This year marks the 10th annual WHD to look at hunger as a whole.

International Missing Children's Day

  • International Missing Children's Day is observed globally on 25th May every year. This day is observed for missing children who have found their way home, remember those that are victims of crime, and continue efforts to seek out those that are still missing. 25 May is now widely referred to as Missing Children's Day, with the forget-me-not flower as its emblem.
  • The day was proclaimed in 1983, by U.S. President Ronald Reagan. In 2001, 25 May was the first formally recognized as International Missing Children's Day (IMCD), to a joint effort on the part of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC), Missing Children Europe and therefore the European Commission.

Commonwealth Day (India)

  • The Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday in the month of March every year. However, in India another Commonwealth Day is also celebrated on May 24. Also known as the Empire Day, the Commonwealth Day commemorates the formation of the British Empire in India and other colonies of Britain.
  • It was not until after the death of Queen Victoria, who passed away on January 22, 1901 that Empire Day was first celebrated. The first Empire Day was celebrated on May 24, 1902 which was the Queen's birthday. Many schools across the British Empire were celebrating it even before it was officially recognised as an annual event.
