World Asteroid Day

  • Asteroid Day is an annual global event which is held on the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event, which is considered by some to be the most harmful known asteroid-related event on Earth in recent history. The United Nations proclaimed it be observed globally on June 30 every year in its resolution. Asteroid Day aims to raise awareness about asteroids and what can be done to protect the Earth, its families, communities, and future generations from a catastrophic event.
  • Asteroid Day was co-founded by Stephen Hawking, filmmaker Grigorij Richters, B612 Foundation President, Danica Remy, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart and Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist.

International Day of Parliamentarism

  • The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.
  • Instituting an international day for parliaments is particularly important at this critical time for parliamentary democracy, when people are losing trust in political institutions and democracy itself is facing challenges from populist and nationalist movements. If democracy is to thrive, then parliaments, as the cornerstone of functioning democracies, need to be strong, transparent, accountable and representative.
  • The International Day of Parliamentarism is a time to review the progress that parliaments have made in achieving some key goals to be more representative and move with the times, including carrying out self-assessments, working to include more women and young MPs, and adapting to new technologies.
  • The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/72/278, recognized the role of parliaments in national plans and strategies and in ensuring greater transparency and accountability at national and global levels.

National Statistics Day

  • The government of India celebrates National Statistics Day on 29th June on the birth anniversary of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis. The Day is celebrated to create awareness among youth about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. The Day to popularise the use of statistics in everyday life and sensitise the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies.
  • End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture (Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 2 of the UN) is the theme of this year's National Statistics Day.
  • National Statistics Day was first celebrated on 29th June 2007. The Government of India decided to celebrate the outstanding contribution made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of economic planning and statistical development and hence mark his birth anniversary as 'National Statistics Day.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

  • June 26 every year is observed as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking or World Drug Day to create awareness about issues related to drugs and seek international cooperation to combat its effects on health, society, and governance.
  • The day June 26 was chosen by the UN General Assembly, on December 7, 1987, as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by its resolution 42/112. The assembly made the decision to observe this day as an expression of its resolution to make international society free of drug abuse.
  • This year, the theme is 'Share Facts On Drugs, Save Lives'. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the motive is to combat misinformation by sharing real facts on drugs — from health risks and solutions for the world drug problem to evidence-based prevention, treatment, and care.

G20 Education Ministers Meet

  • The Minister of State for Education Shri Sanjay Dhotre participated in the G20 Education Ministers' Meeting in June 2021. The meeting was hosted in blended mode by Italy. G20 Education Ministers exchanged views on how to progress on the fight against educational poverty and inequalities, especially in context of the Covid 19 pandemic. The ministers also resolved to share innovative experiences implemented during the pandemic to ensure the continuity and quality of learning pathways through blended education.

Day of the Seafarer

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates the annual Day of the Seafarer (DoS) on June 25 each year to pay respect to Seafarers and sailors who help the entire world function by conducting sea transport. 2021 marks the 11th anniversary of DoS. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, seafarers found themselves both on the front line of the global response and subject to difficult working conditions surrounding uncertainties and difficulties around port access, re-supply, crew changeovers, repatriation, etc.
  • The theme of the 2021 campaign is "Seafarers: at the core of shipping's future".
  • The day was proposed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 to celebrate the contribution of the seafarer to the world economy and civil society. This special day has been celebrated since 2011.

United Nations Public Service Day

  • The United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated every year on 23rd June with the aim to appreciate the value of public service to the common people. It highlights the contribution and role of public service in the development process all over the world.
  • The UN Public Service Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly's resolution A/RES/57/277 of 2003.
  • This year (2021), the United Nations Public Service Day was celebrated under the theme "Innovating the Future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era to Reach the SDGs".

International Olympic Day

  • June 23 marks International Olympic Day.
  • International Olympic Day is organised by National Olympic Committees (NOCs) on 23rd June to celebrate the foundation of International Olympic Committee (IOC), established on 23rd June, 1894 in Sorbonne, Paris.
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was found in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.

International Widows Day

  • International Widows Day is observed on June 23 every year to draw attention towards the voices of widows and highlight their problems. It is a United Nations (UN) ratified day of action to address the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in several countries of the world.
  • The day was established by The Loomba Foundation to raise awareness about the matter of widowhood.
  • June 23 was chosen to mark International Widows day as it was on this day in 1954 that Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, mother of Lord Loomba, became a widow.
  • The first International Widows Day took place in 2005 and was launched by Lord Loomba and Cherie Blair, the foundation's president.
