IAI Completes Test of New Defense Missile with 150 km Range

  • The Israel Aerospace Industries successfully completed live fire trials of a new long range defense missile.
  • The Barak extended range interceptor can take out airborne threats at a range of 150 kilometers (93 miles).
  • The missile, part of the firm's family of Barak interceptors, is launched vertically and includes a rocket motor, a booster, and a radar homing seeker. The range was extended by adjusting other interceptor missiles and radar capabilities.
  • The Barak system provides an integrated defense against an array of potential simultaneous aerial threats fired from different sources and ranges.

Defence Ministry Seals Deal with Mahindra Defence for Combat Vehicles

  • The Defence Ministry finalised a contract with Mahindra Defence Systems Ltd (MDSL) to procure 1,300 light combat vehicles for the Indian Army at a cost of Rs. 1,056 crore.
  • The induction of the vehicles is planned to be completed in four years.
  • The light specialist vehicle is a modern fighting vehicle and will be authorised to various fighting units for carriage of medium machine guns, automatic grenade launchers as well as anti-tank guided missiles.

Russian Jet Makers Sukhoi, MiG United under Single Program

  • Having long been on the agenda, a series of structural changes are on the way for Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and leading aircraft manufacturers Sukhoi and MiG. The Russian state-owned conglomerate Rostec will unite the three entities into a single corporate aircraft building center in a move that will consolidate the management of aircraft programs and other assets of the UAC.
  • The engineering and design functions of the group will be divided into a separate center, which will be located in Moscow and will include all aviation design bureaus.
  • The report highlighted that the reforms are intended to increase the economic sustainability of UAC, optimize the administrative and managerial staff and reduce non-production costs and debt burden.

India, Pakistan and China to Hold Joint Anti-terrorism Exercise

  • Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members including India, Pakistan and China will participate in a joint anti-terrorism exercise this year.
  • The decision to hold the joint exercise named "Pabbi-Antiterror-2021" was announced by the eight-member bloc on March 1, during the 36th meeting of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • The other members of SCO include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The representatives of the member states also approved the draft program of cooperation for 2022-2024 to counter-terrorism, separatism and extremism.

India Has World's Fourth Strongest Military

  • According to a study released by defence website Military Direct, China has the strongest military force in the world while India stands at number four.
  • "The USA, despite their enormous military budgets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points, followed by Russia with 69, India at 61 and then France with 58. The UK just about makes the Top 10, coming in 9th place with a score of 43.
  • As per the study, ultimate military strength index was calculated after taking into consideration various factors including budgets, number of inactive and active military personnel, total air, sea, land and nuclear resources, average salaries, and weight of equipment.

Indigenously Built Indian Naval Landing Craft L58 Commissioned

  • Indian Naval Landing Craft Utility (LCU) L58, the eighth and last ship of the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Mark IV Class, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) Lieutenant General Manoj Pande was the Chief Guest and Chairman & Managing Director, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) Rear Admiral Vipin Kumar Saxena, IN (Retd) was present for the event.
  • The LCU 58 is an amphibious ship that can carry 160 troops, in addition to its crew. With a displacement of 900 tons, the ship is capable of carrying various types of combat vehicles such as Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), BMPs, Armoured Vehicles, trucks, etc.

Indian Navy Conducts Passage Exercise with Bahrain's Navy

  • Indian Navy undertook Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Bahrain Naval Force Corvette Al Muharraq in the Persian Gulf under Operation Sankalp.
  • Enhancing interoperability & strengthening bilateral Maritime cooperation, Reassuring Diaspora & merchant shipping INS Talwar Mission Deployed for Op Sankalp, undertook Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Bahrain Naval Force Corvette Al Muharraq in the Persian Gulf till March 21.
  • PASSEXs are conducted regularly by the Indian Navy with units of friendly foreign navies, whilst visiting each other's ports or during a rendezvous at sea.
  • Maritime Security Operations, code-named Op Sankalp was initiated in the Gulf region on June 19, 2019, in the aftermath of the attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf of Oman.
