Lt Gen Manjinder Singh Assumes Charge as Chief of Staff of Western Command

  • Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh assumed charge as Chief of Staff, Western Command, at Chandimandir on Thursday. He takes over from Lt Gen Yogendra Dimri, who has been elevated as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command.
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Kapurthala, National Defence Academy, Kharakvasla and the National Defence College in Thailand, Lt Gen Manjinder was commissioned into 19 Madras in December 1986.
  • He was decorated with the Yudh Seva Medal in 2015 for distinguished service in an operational area and the Vishist Seva Medal in 2019 for devotion to duty.

Australia to Build Guided Missiles

  • Australia announced that it would begin building its own guided missiles in close collaboration with the U.S. as it seeks to boost its defence capabilities.
  • The news comes amid growing unease in the Pacific region about China's increasing assertiveness and military abilities.
  • Citing the changing global environment, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that it would partner with a weapons manufacturer to build the missiles in a plan that would create thousands of jobs as well as export opportunities.

Chinese Warplane Firm Lays Out Plans for New Stealth Fighter & Next-gen Aircraft

  • A top Chinese warplane-producing company recently announced plans to make technological breakthroughs to ensure the successful development of a new, fourth-generation stealth fighter jet, and conduct test production and research on its next-generation aircraft in 2021.
  • China is widely expected to develop an aircraft carrier-ready stealth fighter jet, as the US is racing China in next-generation warplane development.
  • Dubbed a cradle of Chinese fighter jets, the Shenyang Aircraft Co. Ltd. under the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) released a statement last week on its WeChat public account and revealed its work plans for 2021.

Project to Build Nuclear-powered Attack Submarines Set to Get CCS Nod

  • India is set to clear a mega indigenous project to build three nuclear-powered attack submarines, which will be followed by approval for another three at a later stage, as part of the long-term plan to counter China's expanding naval footprint in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond.
  • As per reports, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is likely to give the final nod "within a month or two" to the submarine project, which has been hanging fire for over a year now.
  • The overall project is for the construction of six nuclear-powered attack submarines (called SSNs in naval parlance), each weighing over 6,000-tonne, at the ship-building center (SBC) at Vizag.

Special Forces of India, US carry Out Military Exercise in Himachal Pradesh

  • Special forces of India carried out a joint military exercise with US Special forces at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh this month to enhance interoperability between the two sides.
  • The joint exercise between the special forces of both the countries is held to share the best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics.
  • The 11th edition of Indo-US joint special forces exercise 'Vajra Prahar 2021' was conducted at Special Forces Training School located at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh in March.

Japan and Indonesia Sign Pact to Transfer Arms

  • Japan and Indonesia signed a pact allowing the transfer of Japanese defense equipment and technology to Jakarta as the two countries strengthen their military ties in the face of China's increasingly assertive activity in the region.
  • The agreement came during two plus two security talks among the foreign and defense ministers of the two countries, which share concerns about China's growing influence and territorial claims in the East and South China seas.
  • Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi and their Indonesian counterparts, Retno Marsudi and Prabowo Subianto, also agreed to actively participate in multinational military exercises and jointly develop remote islands in the South China Sea.

Robot to Handle Unexploded Ordnance Ready for Tech Transfer

  • A state-of-the-art Unexploded Ordnance Handling Robot (UXOR) that can handle and defuse unexploded ordnance (UXOs) — bombs, motors and missiles — up to 1,000 kg remotely from 1 km Line Of Sight (LOS) is ready for technology transfer to private firms.
  • Designed and developed by the defence research and development organisation's (DRDO) Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), the agency is offering three licences for production of the UXOR, which has already completed user trials with the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • As per Sateesh Reddy, chairman, DRDO, both the Indian army and the air force are interested in the project.

India and the US Begin Two-day Naval Exercise

  • India and the US kicked off a two-day naval exercise in the eastern Indian Ocean Region, reflecting the growing congruence in their defence and military partnership.
  • The Indian Navy deployed its warship Shivalik and long-range maritime patrol aircraft P8I in the 'PASSEX' exercise while the US Navy was represented by the USS Theodore Rosevelt carrier strike group.
  • A carrier battle group or carrier strike group is a mega naval fleet comprising an aircraft carrier, accompanied by a large number of destroyers, frigates and other ships.
  • In a first, enhancing jointmanship, Indian Air Force fighters were also included in the exercise affording the IAF an opportunity to practice air interception and air defence with the US Navy.

SI Priyanka Becomes First Female Officer to be Part of Encounter

  • Sub-Inspector Priyanka became the first woman personnel of Delhi Police to be a part of an encounter in central Delhi which led to the arrest of an alleged gangster and his associate.
  • The encounter took place at Pragati Maidan here and led to the arrest of Rohit Chaudhary (35), carrying a reward of Rs. 3.5 lakh and his accomplice Parveen alias Titu, carrying a reward of Rs. 2 lakh.
  • The police claimed that SI Priyanka was the first woman personnel of the force to be a part of an encounter.
  • Priyanka joined the Delhi Police in 2008 and has been working in the Crime Branch for the past two years. Before joining the unit, she was posted in the district unit.

Lt Gen Ananthanarayanan is 16th Rising Star Corps Commander

  • Lieutenant general PN Ananthanarayanan took over as the 16th Rising Star Corps commander.
  • General PN Ananthanarayanan is an alumni of the Rashtriya Indian Military College, National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the 8th Gorkha Rifles in December 1984.
  • In a career spanning over 36 years, the officer has held multiple staff, instructional and command appointments. He has commanded his battalion, an infantry brigade and an infantry division on the line of actual control. His staff experience includes brigade major of armoured brigade, deputy assistant military secretary at HQ Northern Command, colonel (quartermaster) at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and major general administration at headquarters, South Western Command. He has also been an instructor and assistant adjutant at National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and senior instructor at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
