DRDO Successfully Test-fires Pinaka, 122 mm Caliber Rockets

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired enhanced range versions of indigenously developed 122 mm Caliber rocket and extended range version of Pinaka rocket from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • Twenty-five enhanced Pinaka Rockets were launched in quick succession against targets at different ranges. All the mission objectives were met during the launches. The enhanced range version of Pinaka rocket system can destroy targets at distances up to 45 km.

India Successfully Test Fires Subsonic Cruise Missile Nirbhay

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired the subsonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' in June 2021, from an Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha's Balasore. This was the eighth test flight of the missile. The first test flight of Nirbhay was held on 12 March 2013.
  • Nirbhay is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.
  • The missile can be launched from multiple platforms and is capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads.
  • Nirbhay is a two-stage missile and can engage several targets in a single flight.
  • The missile has a length of 6 metres, a width of 0.52 metres, a wingspan of 2.7 metres and weighs about 1500 kg.
  • It has a strike range of about 1500 km.

Indian Army Plans to Buy 1,750 Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles

  • Indian Army issued the Request for Information (RFI) to finalise the specifications for acquiring 1,750 Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICVs) under the Make in India initiative to destroy enemy tanks and carry troops.
  • The Indian Army wants to deploy the vehicles in places like Eastern Ladakh along with desert and amphibious terrain.
  • The FICV project has been in plans for a long time and the need for a modern troops carrier equipped with tank-busting capabilities was felt during the recent Ladakh conflict.

Indian Navy's Sahyadri Getsn 'Best Ship' Title at Fleet Awards

  • INS Sahyadri has been adjudged the best ship of the Eastern Fleet among capital ships, INS Kamorta has received the title of the most spirited ship. INS Kiltan and INS Khukri won the best corvette trophy amongst corvettes and similar classes of ships.
  • Fleet Awards Function 2021 was held to mark the culmination of the Operational Cycle of the Eastern Fleet and to recognise accomplishments of the 'Sword Arm' of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC). Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief ENC Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh was the chief guest at the event.

IAF and Navy Conducts Exercise with US Carrier Group

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy are participating in an exercise with a US carrier strike group (CSG) in the Indian Ocean for two days.
  • As part of the exercise, Sukhois, Jaguars, IAF refuelling aircraft and warships and maritime patrol aircraft of the Navy are participating in the exercise.
  • The Navy's INS Kochi and Teg, along with P8I and MiG-29K aircraft are participating in a 'Passage Exercise' with US Navy CSG Ronald Reagan during its transit through Indian Ocean Region.

BSF Holds Border Coordination Conference with Bangladesh

  • The border security forces of India and Bangladesh participated in a three-day Border Co-ordination Conference.
  • India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh's Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) held the meet through a video conference.

Israel Successfully Tests Airborne High-power Laser

  • Israeli military has successfully tested an airborne high-power laser which has the capability to shoot down drones.
  • Israel already has large and sophisticated air defense system.
  • This system had 90 per cent interception rate against thousands of rockets which were fired from Gaza during 11-day war of May 2021.
  • Laser is a prototype developed with Elbit Systems. It was mounted on a civilian plane and successfully shot down drones in recent test conducted over Mediterranean Sea.
  • Laser weapon is a directed-energy weapon based on lasers. As of January 2020, directed-energy weapons including lasers are currently at experimental stage. It is yet to be seen if or when laser weapons will be deployed as practical, high-performance military weapons. Laser generates a beam of light which needs clear air or a vacuum to work without thermal blooming.

Turkish Aerospace Builds Europe's 2nd Biggest Wind Tunnel

  • Turkish Aerospace is building Turkey's biggest and Europe's second largest subsonic wind tunnel facility. The facility is underway for the purpose of carrying out wind tunnel tests of Turkish Fighter. The wind tunnel is intended to be used in the development of indigenous, rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, especially the Turkish Fighter.
  • The tunnel will have three different test sections, large, small and open. The test specimens will be positioned in these sections and will be equipped with state of the art technology measurement and sensing devices for advanced testing.
  • With the integrated moving ground belt system, landing and take-off tests for aircraft will be carried out only in this tunnel in Turkey. In addition to these test capabilities, the production, integration and instrumentation of the models to be tested will also be carried out in this facility and significant contributions will be made to the product development process.
