BHU Launches Annie Besant Fellowship for PhD Aspirants
Banaras Hindu University launched a new scheme, Annie Besant Fellowship to encourage its top notch students to join PhD programs in BHU, right after completing their Post Graduation degree.
The scheme was launched under the Institution of Eminence – BHU program. Final year students of postgraduate programs are eligible to apply for the fellowship. They should be in the top five percentile with a minimum 8.5 CGPA.
Those joining the fellowship would be expected to complete their PhD thesis within four years of joining the program. The selected candidates will be provided JRF with contingency similar to that of CSIR/UGC during their Ph.D programme.
IIM-Udaipur Appoints Prof Ashok Banerjee as New Director
IIM Udaipur appointed Prof Ashok Banerjee as its new director. Prof Banerjee, who is faculty at IIM Calcutta, succeeded Prof Janat Shah who helmed the institute since its inception in 2011. Prof Banerjee is a Chartered Accountant and holds an MCom degree from Calcutta University and a PhD from Rajasthan University.
The new director has a vast experience as a senior professor in the Finance and Control area, as per a statement by IIM-U. His research interests are in the areas of high-frequency finance, Fintech, and sentiment analysis. He was the Dean (New Initiatives and External Relations) at IIM Calcutta from 2012 to 2015. Prior to joining IIM Calcutta, he was a professor at IIM Lucknow.
Centre Constitutes Special Task Force to Monitor Monkeypox
The Centre formed a task force in the wake of Monkeypox cases in India to monitor and provide guidance to the government on the expansion of diagnostic facilities and to explore vaccination for the infection in the country.
The decision was taken during a meeting which was attended by Cabinet secretary, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, Additional Secretary (PMO) and other senior officials.
NITI Aayog member (health) V.K. Paul heads the task force and its members would include officials from the ministry and representatives of the country's major medical and research institutes.

Govt. Revives Plan for a New Higher Education Regulator
Two years after the launch of the National Education Policy 2020, which proposed the setting up of a Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), the Centre is reworking a draft of the Bill that will bring to life the proposed regulatory body for college and university-level education, cutting across disciplines.
Setting up of the proposed HECI is the most significant regulatory reform in higher education that the NEP envisages. At an event to celebrate the second anniversary of the policy, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the policy will lay the foundation for transformative changes in the country.
The ultimate objective of the HECI Bill remains bringing the activities of the University Grants Commission, AIl India Council for Technical Education and the National Council for Teacher Education under one roof, it is being changed to incorporate the components of NEP.
Kerala's Idukki Medical College Gets NMC Approval for 100 MBBS Seats
The National Medical Commission (NMC) accorded sanction to open the government medical college in Kerala's high range district of Idukki with the admission of 100 MBBS students, a long pending demand of the southern state.
The state government, which managed to secure sanction for the same through years-long efforts, said that all the required procedures would be completed at the earliest and steps would be taken to begin classes by this year itself.
The Idukki Medical College, which began its operations during the time of the previous Congress-UDF government, had lost the then Medical Council of India (MCI) recognition in the year 2016 as it didn't have any adequate amenities including required number of beds, academic block, staffs and accommodation facilities for students and employees.
Robot 'Eagle, Teaches Science & Humanities at a Hyderabad School
A school in Hyderabad introduced robotic teacher, said to be the first of its kind in India for students.
The teaching robot, called Eagle is said to be capable of teaching students of grades 5 to 11, in the classroom along with the human teacher and also in a stand-alone mode.
It was introduced by the Indus Trust, which runs a network of Indus International Schools in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, and Belagavi.
The robots developed in-house by Indus have been introduced as teacher assistants for classes 7, 8, and 9 for physics, chemistry, biology, geography, and history. They work along with teachers in delivering lessons.
NTA Introduces JEE Centres in Washington, Moscow for First Time
Overseas centres for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, India's most popular engineering entrance test, came up for the first time in cities such as Washington DC, Moscow and Ottawa, with the National Testing Agency (NTA) decided to venture beyond countries in Southeast and West Asia.
The NTA also expanded JEE centres within India, bringing them to several remote areas in the country in coordination with local authorities like district magistrates and police.
JEE centres were set up for the first time in the United States, Canada, Russia, Indonesia and Mauritius. Overall, there are 19 overseas centres, in which 1,226 candidates registered to appear.

UGC Ties up with MeiTy to Launch New Higher Education Portal for Students in Rural Areas
As per the University Grants Commission (UGC), over 23,000 higher education courses, including programmes on artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security and early childhood care, will now be available free of cost on a new web portal.
The portal is aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing the accessibility of higher education in remote parts of the country.
The UGC tied up with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to integrate the e-resources with their over 7.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSC) and Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Centres to offer these courses from the forthcoming academic session of 2022-23.

IIT Madras Launches 'Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat' to Promote Indian Language Technology
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras launched the 'Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat' to promote the state of Indian language technology with the intention to create a societal impact. This Centre, inaugurated by Nandan Nilekani, is supported by Rohini and Nandan Nilekani with a grant of Rs. 36 crore through Nilekani Philanthropies.
The AI4Bharat was set-up as an initiative of IIT Madras to build open-source language AI for Indian languages.

IGNOU Launches New MBA, MCom Programmes in Online Mode
Open university IGNOU's School of Management Studies launched four new MBA programmes in functional specialisation areas and MCom programme in the online mode from the July 2022 session.
The candidates can choose and join an MBA programme in any functional specialisation in Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, and Operations Management. The MCom programme would also help working professionals.
As per Prof Nageshwar Rao, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, all these programmes have been revised as per today's requirements and are in line with the recommendations of NEP 2020.
