Veteran Bengali author Debesh Roy, who was conferred the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel 'Teesta Parer Brittanto', died at a private hospital in Kolkata.
He was born in Pabna in present-day Bangladesh on December 17, 1936. He had five decades of career as a writer.
Besides Teesta Parer Britanta', he will be remembered for books like Borisaler Jogen Mondal , Manush Khun Kore Keno and Samay Asamayer Brittanto . His first book was Jajati.
Roy was 84 and he is survived by his son.

Realtors body National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) has appointed Rajesh Goel as director general (DG) of the association.
Earlier, Goel was serving as the chairman and managing director, Hindustan Prefab Ltd.
Rajesh Goel is a professional with over 37 years of experience in leading PSUs under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, superannuated in November 2019 as the chairman and managing director of Hindustan Prefab Ltd.

Padma Bhushan Recipient Professor Anisuzzaman Passed Away
Padma Bhushan recipient and Bangladesh''s National Professor Anisuzzaman died at a military hospital in Dhaka.
India had awarded him Padma Bhushan for his distinguished service in fields of Bangla literature and education. He was also awarded Ekushey Padak and Swadhinata Padak, the highest state awards given by Bangladesh.
Born in Kolkata in February 1937, Prof Anisuzzaman and his family shifted to Bangladesh soon after the partition in 1947.

V. Vidyavathi becomes new DG of Archaeological Survey of India
IAS officer V. Vidyavathi is appointed as the new Director-General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) effective from 12th May, 2020. She is a 1991 batch Karnataka cadre officer.

Former National Table Tennis Champion Manmeet Singh Walia Passes Away at 58
Former national table tennis champion Manmeet Singh Walia, who was suffering from rare ALS disease for nearly two years, has died in Montreal, Canada.
Manmeet was 58 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
One of the finest and consistent performers in the '80s, Manmeet became the national champion in 1989 when he beat S Sriram in the men's singles final in Hyderabad.
He had represented the country at multiple international events after making his debut at the Asian Championships in 1980 along with eight-time national champion Kamlesh Mehta.

Grammy winning-singer Betty Wright dies at 66
Iconic soul and R&B singer Betty Wright has died after a battle with cancer. She was 66. The Grammy winner passed away in her hometown Miami, Florida.
Wright, whose real name was Bessie Regina Norris, was born in 1953. She started singing as part of her siblings' musical group called the 'Echoes of Joy', but she rose to fame in the 1970s. The singer was a member of the gospel ensemble until they parted ways when she was 11, leading her to embrace R&B music.
Narinder Batra's Term as FIH President Extended to May 2021
Narinder Batra will remain President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) until May 2021. The FIH said in a statement while announcing the postponement of the 47th FIH Congress that the terms of Batra and the Executive Board members which were due to end in October 2020 have now been extended.
The Presidential election for the world body had been due to take place at this year's Congress in New Delhi but it has now been pushed back in the wake of COVID-19 crisis.
