Maharashtra to Launch Centre to Collate Data on State Schools Taking Inspiration from Gujarat's V...

  • The state government is set to launch Maharashtra Shikshan Samruddhi Kendra, a centre that will collate data on government, aided and civic-run schools from across Maharashtra.
  • The idea is to analyse the data and create a targeted roadmap to improve the standards of education imparted in these schools.
  • To be set up on the lines of Vidya Samiksha Kendra in Gujarat, the tech set-up of the centre, along with the software, is would be inaugurated in Pune. The Maharashtra Prathamik Shikshan Parishad (MPSP), which has taken help from IT companies to develop the software, will track students from classes 1 to 8 under the initiative.
  • A team of 20 education and technology experts will work on data analysis at the centre, which in turn will create a roadmap for each district.
  • The government envisions having real-time performance reports of each district, school and student with the help of the software.

IIT Roorkee Bags most Innovative Research Institute Award by CII

  • IIT Roorkee bagged the 'Most Innovative Research Institute of the Year' award by the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the third time in a row. This is part of the ninth edition of CII's Industrial Innovation Awards.
  • The institute was also the category winner for 'Innovation Quotient' for its innovations in the fields of energy storage devices, remediation, technology, and other sectors.
  • IIT Roorkee is currently supporting more than 130 start-ups and has performed highly in all three pillars of innovation -- disruptive innovation, innovation quotient, and innovation realisation.
  • IIT Madras bagged the first runner-up position in the Most Innovative Institute 2022 category.

IAS Sanjay Kumar Takes Charge as Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy

  • IAS Sanjay Kumar took charge as Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education in Shashtri Bhawan in New Delhi. Sanjay Kumar, a 1990-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer, was a former Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He replaced Anita Karwal IAS upon her superannuation.
  • Pursuant to assuming charge, Sanjay Kumar held a meeting with the senior officials of the Ministry in which he reviewed the functioning of the department, autonomous bodies and various schemes relating to school education.

Assam to Give Stipend to all Female PG Students of Rs. 10,000 Each

  • Assam government will soon introduce a scheme under which all female students pursuing post-graduate courses in the state will be provided a yearly stipend of Rs. 10,000 each.
  • This would be helpful in covering their commutation and other related expenses.
  • The Chief Minister appealed to the female students pursuing PG courses to apply for getting the stipend in the portal to be launched by the Department of Education for the purpose in a few weeks from now.

IIT Guwahati Bags Highest Foreign Job Offer of Rs. 2.4 crore

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati bagged the highest international offer of Rs. 2.4 crore, kicking off the first day of final placements with optimism in a post-pandemic year marked by layoffs and hiring freeze.
  • The highest international offer at IIT Guwahati was up by 17 per cent over last year's (2021) Rs. 2.05 crore, whereas the highest domestic offer was Rs. 1.1 crore at the close of the day. The placements were underway at some of the leading older IITs.
  • A total of 25 offers with pay packages in excess of Rs. 1 crore per annum were made at the end of Session 1.1 on Day One of the recruitment process at IIT Madras. Its students also received 15 international offers from four companies.

BIS Signs MoU with top six Engineering Institutes of India

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the top six engineering institutes of India for introducing Indian standards as an integral part of the curriculum. This initiative is towards institutionalizing engagement of BIS with eminent institutes to secure active participation of academia.
  • The MoU was signed with the Indian Institute of Technology BHU, Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and National Institute of Technology Trichy.
  • The establishment will promote excellence and leadership in teaching and research & development in the field of science and various disciplines in the respective institutes.

UGC's Approval must for Universities to Offer Open, Distance Learning Courses

  • Prior approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) is now mandatory for Universities to offer Open and Distance Learning courses.
  • Universities may offer courses in the Open and Distance Learning mode, with approval of the Commission, provided it satisfies all the conditions laid down under the regulations, by whatever name they are called, pertaining to open and distance learning mode notified by the UGC from time to time.
  • At the 562th meeting of the commission, amendments to the existing regulations were approved and these were published.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year is 'Gaslighting'

  • Merriam-Webster's word of the year is "gaslighting."
  • The online dictionary chose "gaslighting," which it defines as "the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one's own advantage," as its top word of 2022 because it became the "favoured word for the perception of deception."
  • Gaslighting is usually more complex than an off-the-cuff lie and more nefarious, too: Gaslighting someone into believing they're wrong is often part of a "larger plan," said Merriam-Webster.
  • The term "gaslighting" encapsulates some of the other common terms we associate with misinformation – "deepfakes" and "fake news" among them, per Merriam-Webster.

IIM Raipur, to Introduce an Executive Certificate Programme for Strategic Chief Marketing Officers

  • A new training programme, jointly developed by IIM Raipur and Imarticus Learning, has been launched and will come into effect from February 18, 2023.
  • The Executive Certificate Programme for Strategic Chief Marketing Officers is a 10-month course that is designed specifically for professionals at senior levels.
  • It aims to familiarise them with the contemporary challenges in the field of marketing and engage meaningfully with CXOs within and outside the organisation.
  • Curriculum goals include understanding customer needs, crafting marketing strategies, implementing business decisions, and implementing master's plans to help the organisation succeed.
  • A bachelor's degree and five years of professional experience are the minimum requirements for the course. IIM Raipur will award learners a certificate at the end of the programme.
