IIT Delhi Organises 4th Edition of Industry Day

  • IIT Delhi's flagship industry-academia partnership event, Industry Day 2022, was held on December 10, 2022.
  • The fourth edition of the daylong event gave an opportunity to the industry to witness how IIT Delhi is working to develop technologies that will benefit both the industry and society. Top leadership from over 15 large corporate and business houses were present at the event.
  • Industry Day 2022 centred on four themes that are woven into India's commitment to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals. The thematic sessions on Healthcare, Electric Vehicles, Communication Technologies, and Clean Energy and Environment will be attended by industry leaders, scientists, IIT Delhi faculty, research scholars, and students who will deliberate on fundamental concepts and new perspectives that will have an impact on civil society as a whole.
  • The annual event displayed the best of IIT Delhi's collaborative and interdisciplinary sharing through the breadth of the research presented.

India, Germany Strengthen Partnership to Promote Vocational Training, Education

  • The Indo-German joint working group met in New Delhi and encouraged Vocational Education and Training (VET). This was the 12th edition of the meeting, in which the experts assessed the skills gaps present in the country.
  • KK Dwivedi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India and Alexander Hochradel, Senior Policy Officer of division 222: ERASMUS; International Cooperation in Vocational Training, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) co-chaired the meeting.
  • The aim of this meeting was to institutionalise a standard mechanism for VET to meet the skill requirements in priority sectors as per the German standards. To achieve this, a skill mapping exercise will be undertaken to assess the skill gaps. Based on this, bridge courses and upskilling programmes will be designed for skill training of Indian workers.

UGC Forms Panel to Work on Textbooks in Indian Languages

  • University Grants Commission (UGC) chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar met representatives of international publishers to discuss a roadmap for translating their books as part of plans to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Indian languages across disciplines.
  • The UGC also constituted an apex committee to prepare the roadmap to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses in regional languages in disciplines including commerce, humanities, and science across the country.
  • The UGC has sought the translation of textbooks for undergraduate programmes in languages such as Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu. "The UGC will also provide hand-holding to the publishers regarding the identification of textbooks, translation tools, and experts for editing to these publishers.

IIM-Raipur to Launch Executive Certificate Programme for Chief Supply Chain, Operations Officer

  • The Indian Institute of Management, Raipur collaborated with Imarticus Learning to launch its Executive Certificate Programme for chief supply chain and operations officers. The course will be 10 months long and candidates require a graduate degree to apply for the course.
  • The programme aims to help aspiring professionals in the field of supply chain and operations to up skill and gain better employment and promotion opportunities. And those who are already established in the field, it will help them acquire leadership skills in the area of strategy, operations and technology.
  • There would be over 150 hours of live sessions from experts of IIM Raipur and a three-day immersive session on campus. The graduates from this programme will also receive a certificate from the institute.

IIT-Mandi Awards Record Number of PhDs at 10th Convocation Ceremony

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi awarded 64 PhDs, the highest in an academic year till date. There were 59 who graduated with a normal PhD and 5 who had done an iPhD (integrated PhD).
  • Out of the students who graduated with PhDs, there were 28 women in PhD programme and 4 in iPhD programme, surpassing the numbers from the previous years. IIT Mandi has four PhD programmes and one iPhD programme.
  • At the 10th convocation ceremony of IIT Mandi a total of 462 students graduated this year. Out of the students who have graduated this year, there were 348 male students and 114 female students.

Oxford Dictionaries Names 'Goblin Mode' Word of the Year

  • Asked to sum up 2022 in a word, the public has chosen a phrase.
  • Oxford Dictionaries said that 'goblin mode' was selected by online vote as its word of the year.
  • It defines the term as a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.
  • First seen on Twitter in 2009, goblin mode gained popularity in 2022 as people around the world emerged uncertainly from pandemic lockdowns.
  • The word of the year is intended to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months. For the first time this year's (2022) winning phrase was chosen by public vote, from among three finalists selected by Oxford Languages lexicographers: goblin mode, metaverse and the hashtag IStandWith.

Maharashtra to Launch Centre to Collate Data on State Schools Taking Inspiration from Gujarat's V...

  • The state government is set to launch Maharashtra Shikshan Samruddhi Kendra, a centre that will collate data on government, aided and civic-run schools from across Maharashtra.
  • The idea is to analyse the data and create a targeted roadmap to improve the standards of education imparted in these schools.
  • To be set up on the lines of Vidya Samiksha Kendra in Gujarat, the tech set-up of the centre, along with the software, is would be inaugurated in Pune. The Maharashtra Prathamik Shikshan Parishad (MPSP), which has taken help from IT companies to develop the software, will track students from classes 1 to 8 under the initiative.
  • A team of 20 education and technology experts will work on data analysis at the centre, which in turn will create a roadmap for each district.
  • The government envisions having real-time performance reports of each district, school and student with the help of the software.

IIT Roorkee Bags most Innovative Research Institute Award by CII

  • IIT Roorkee bagged the 'Most Innovative Research Institute of the Year' award by the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the third time in a row. This is part of the ninth edition of CII's Industrial Innovation Awards.
  • The institute was also the category winner for 'Innovation Quotient' for its innovations in the fields of energy storage devices, remediation, technology, and other sectors.
  • IIT Roorkee is currently supporting more than 130 start-ups and has performed highly in all three pillars of innovation -- disruptive innovation, innovation quotient, and innovation realisation.
  • IIT Madras bagged the first runner-up position in the Most Innovative Institute 2022 category.

IAS Sanjay Kumar Takes Charge as Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy

  • IAS Sanjay Kumar took charge as Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education in Shashtri Bhawan in New Delhi. Sanjay Kumar, a 1990-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer, was a former Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He replaced Anita Karwal IAS upon her superannuation.
  • Pursuant to assuming charge, Sanjay Kumar held a meeting with the senior officials of the Ministry in which he reviewed the functioning of the department, autonomous bodies and various schemes relating to school education.
