Goa Liberation Day

  • 'Goa Liberation Day' is celebrated on December 19 to commemorate the state's liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961.
  • It took Goa 14 years after India gained independence from Portuguese rule to become independent.
  • On December 19, 1961, Jawaharlal Nehru sent armed forces to the coastal state. The Portuguese surrendered and the state was liberated. As a result, Goa, Daman, and Diu became Union Territories of India.
  • Goa continued to be a Union Territory till 1987 and then was given statehood by becoming the 25th state of India.

International Migrants Day

  • International Migrants Day is observed annually on December 18 to bring attention to the social and economic realities of migrants around the world. This day is observed to guarantee that the rights of migrants are equally respected and not violated.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day on December 4, 2000. This special day came into existence after considering the enormous and rising number of migrants around the world. On this day in 1990, the UNGA adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
  • The theme for International Migrants Day 2023 is 'Act today for a better tomorrow for all: Improving the health of migrants to unleash the power of migration'.

Minorities Rights Day in India

  • Minorities Rights Day, December 18 holds great importance in India. This day serves as a reminder of the commitment to protecting the rights of religious, ethnic, racial, and linguistic minorities in the country. As India commemorates this day each year, it aims to create awareness, foster understanding and advocate for the rights of minority communities.
  • A minority group, as per the United Nations, is a community that is socially, politically and economically non-dominant and inferior in population within a given country.
  • The inception of Minorities Rights Day aligns with the adoption of the UN Declaration on December 18, 1992.
  • This declaration underscored the entitlement of individuals from minority groups to freely embrace their own culture, practice their religion, and use their language without facing discrimination.
  • In response to this, India took a noteworthy initiative by establishing the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) under the National Commission for Minorities Act (1992).

Vijay Diwas

  • Every year, India celebrates December 16 as Vijay Diwas to remember its historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The war led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. Around 93,000 Pakistani troops surrendered before the joint forces of the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini on December 16, 1971, which paved the way for the birth of Bangladesh. The day also commemorates the sacrifices made by the defence forces in the decisive war.
  • December 16, 1971, was the day when Pakistan signed the instrument of surrender in Dhaka, following a 13-day India-Pakistan War.

National Energy Conservation Day

  • National Energy Conservation Day is observed in India every year on December 14, to raise public awareness about the value of energy efficiency and conservation.
  • In 1991, the Ministry of Power started a scheme to recognise through awards the contribution of industries and establishments for making special efforts to reduce energy consumption while maintaining their production.
  • On December 14, 1991, the National Energy Conservation Awards were given to the winners for the first time. Since then, the day has been marked as the National Energy Conservation Day. The awards are given by eminent dignitaries during a function.

Universal Health Coverage Day

  • Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day) is commemorated on December 12 every year. It aims to celebrate the progress towards health for all and raise awareness on the need for strong and resilient health systems in achieving universal health coverage.
  • On December 12, 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution urging nations to accelerate their efforts towards achieving universal healthcare (UHC). The primary developmental objective was to ensure that everyone, regardless of their location, has access to high-quality and affordable healthcare. In 2017, the United Nations officially designated December 12 as Universal Health Coverage Day.
  • The theme for Universal Health Coverage Day is 'Health for All: Time for Action', emphasising the need for immediate and tangible steps in creating the world we want.
