ICC Comes up with Massive penalty for Slow Over-rate in T20

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that slow overrate in T20 Internationals will result in a fielder less outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings, starting this month.
  • The governing body also introduced an optional drinks interval midway through the innings in bilateral T20 international cricket as part of its updated playing conditions. The in-match penalties are in addition to the sanctions for slow over rate outlined in Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

  • Fantasy sports platform My11Circle signed up with RP-Sanjiv Goenka group's Lucknow franchise as the official title sponsor of the team for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League.
  • The three-year deal will see My11Circle logo featuring on the Lucknow team jersey.
  • Lucknow franchise is one of the new teams apart from Ahmedabad side in the upcoming season of IPL.

BCCI Postpones Ranji, CK Nayudu Trophy, Women's T20 League

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) postponed the upcoming Ranji Trophy, Col CK Nayudu Trophy and senior women's T20 League for the 2021-22 season in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.
  • The Ranji Trophy was not held last season due to COVID-19 but was set to commence this month. The tournament was scheduled to be held in six cities -- Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Trivandrum.
  • Meanwhile, the CK Nayudu Trophy was scheduled to begin this month whereas the Women's league was scheduled to start in February.

BCCI Announces Squad for ICC Women's World Cup

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the ICC Women's World Cup 2022 and series against New Zealand.
  • The Mithali Raj led side will play their first World Cup fixture against Pakistan on March 6 at the Bay Oval, Tauranga. The squad will also feature in the 5-match ODI series against New Zealand starting from February 11.
  • Team India for 5 ODIs against NZ & ICC Women's World Cup:
  • Mithali Raj (Captain), Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-captain), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wicket-keeper), Sneh Rana, Jhulan Goswami, Pooja Vastrakar, Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh Thakur, Taniya Bhatia (wicket-keeper), Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav.

Sreejesh in Race for World Games Athlete of the Year Award

  • Olympic bronze medal winning India men's hockey goalkeeper P. R. Sreejesh is in race to win the prestigious World Games Athlete of the Year award after being nominated for the honour.
  • The winner will be selected following an online voting process which begins on January 10 and ends of January 31.
  • If Sreejesh manages to win, he will be the second hockey player from the country to bag the title after women's team skipper Rani Rampal.
  • Rani became the first-ever hockey player to win the award in 2020.
  • A total of 24 athletes have been nominated for the award.

Captain Chandi Becomes First Indian-origin Woman to Trek Solo to South Pole

  • Captain Harpreet Chandi, an Indian-origin British Sikh Army officer and physiotherapist, also known as Polar Preet, created history by becoming the first woman of colour to complete a solo unsupported trek to the South Pole.
  • Capt. Chandi announced her history-making feat at the end of Day 40 after travelling 700 miles (1,127 kilometres) while pulling a pulk or sledge with all of her kit and battling temperatures of minus 50 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of around 60 mph.
  • As part of a Medical Regiment in the northwest of England, Capt. Chandi's primary role is to organise and validate training for medics in the Army as Clinical Training Officer.

  • Former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra will be Ahmedabad IPL franchise's head coach during the 2022 Indian Premier League season while England opener of yesteryears Vikram Solanki is in line to become 'Director of Cricket'.
  • World Cup-winning former India coach Gary Kirsten will be the 'Mentor' of the franchise which is expecting to get its formal 'Letter of Intent' (LOI) during the month.
