Indian Climber Baljeet Kaur Scales Two 8,000m Peaks in Nepal in Two Weeks

  • A 27-year-old Indian woman set a record for conquering two mountain peaks in Nepal above 8,000 metres within two weeks. Baljeet Kaur from Himachal Pradesh conquered Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m) on 12th May morning at 4:20 (local time). Earlier, she had climbed Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m) on April 28. This is her second 8,000m plus mountain this season. Now she is preparing to attempt the world's highest peak, Everest and Lhotse (8,516m) soon.
  • Also, Priyanka Mohite from Maharashtra became the first Indian woman to have scaled five peaks, all above 8,000 metres.

Diksha Dagar Claims Gold Medal at Deaflympics

  • Indian golfer Diksha Dagar outplayed American Ashlyn Grace Johnson in the final to bag the gold medal at the Deaflympics, fulfilling her promise of improving upon her silver-winning performance at the 2017 edition. Dagar is now the only golfer with two Deaflympics medals. She had won a silver in 2017 in Turkey.
  • The 21-year-old, who is a professional with victories on the Ladies European Tour, completed a dominant performance with a 5 and 4 win in the final of the match-play section. She beat Johnson with four holes to spare.
  • In 2021, Dagar had qualified at the last moment for the Tokyo Olympics and became the first-ever golfer to have played at the Deaflympics and the Olympic Games.

Brendon McCullum Appointed as England Test Coach

  • Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand captain, was confirmed by the ECB as England Men's new Test head coach, on a four-year deal. McCullum, who will step down from his role as Kolkata Knight Riders' head coach at the end of the ongoing IPL, played 101 Tests for New Zealand between 2004 and 2016, scoring 6453 runs at 38.64 with a highest score of 302 against India in 2014, which remains the only triple-century made by a New Zealander.
  • Although he has never before taken charge of a red-ball team in his coaching career, McCullum was New Zealand captain for 31 Tests from 2013 until his retirement, earning plaudits for a positive approach which was also instrumental in the white-ball team's run to the World Cup final in 2015. In 2020, he also coached Trinbago Knight Riders to the Caribbean Premier League title.

Sherpa Woman Climbs Everest for 10th Time, Breaks Own Record

  • Lakpa Sherpa and several other climbers took advantage of favorable weather to reach the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) summit. He said she was in good health and was safely descending from the peak. Sherpa, 48, never got a chance to get a formal education because she had to start earning a living by carrying climbing gear and supplies for trekkers. A Nepali Sherpa broke her own record as the most successful female climber of Mount Everest by reaching the summit of the world's highest peak for 10th time.
  • A native of Nepal, Sherpa lives in the U.S. with her three children in West Hartford, Connecticut. Another Nepalese Sherpa guide, Kami Rita, reached the summit for the 26th time, breaking his own record for the most climbs of Everest.

Jyothi Yarraji Breaks 100m Hurdles National Record at Cyprus International Meet

  • A month after her national record effort was not counted due to wind assistance beyond legal limit, 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji smashed the NR while winning an event in Cyprus with a timing of 13.23 seconds. The 22-year-old Andhra athlete won the gold in Cyprus International Meet at Limassol under a head wind speed of 0.1m/s. The old national record of 13.38 seconds was in the name of Anuradha Biswal since 2002.
  • In 2020 also, Jyothi had run below Biswal's national record time as she clocked 13.03 seconds at the All India Inter-University Athletics Championships in Moodbidri, Karnataka. But it was also not counted as NR as National Anti-Doping Agency did not test her at the meet and there was no technical delegate from the Athletics Federation of India.

Rupinder to Lead India in Men's Asia Cup Hockey

  • Veteran drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, who came out of retirement, will lead a second-string Indian men's hockey team at the Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in Jakarta from May 23 to June 1. Birendra Lakra, who also returned from retirement, will be his deputy in the 20-member squad. It will be the first assignment for former captain Sardar Singh as India 'A' coach.
  • India are in pool A along with Japan, Pakistan and hosts Indonesia, while Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh are grouped in pool B. India will start their Asia Cup Men's Hockey title defence with a blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on the opening day of the competition.

Anurag Thakur Launches Mascot, Logo and Jersey of Khelo India Youth Games

  • Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has launched the mascot 'Dhakad' along with the official logo and official jersey of the Fourth Khelo India Youth Games at Panchkula and lauded the effort of Haryana to host the games. The competition is being organised by the Sports Authority of India and the state government of Haryana. In this edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, over 8,500 athletes will be participating.
  • Haryana will set an example by hosting the fourth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games from June 4 to June 13 at Panchkula, Chandigarh, Shahabad, Ambala and Delhi. This was supposed to be held in the year 2021 but got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boxing: Russia's Dmitry Bivol retains his WBA light-heavyweight World title

  • Shaking up the boxing world, Russia's Dmitry Bivol defeated Mexican boxing superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to retain his WBA Light-Heavyweight title. Meeting for the "Legacy is Earned" event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Bivol pull out a unanimous points decision win (115-113), extending his undefeated record to 20 bouts.
    • Despite a competitive match, Dmitry Bivol controlled the fight from the outset. Showcasing his signature penchant for shutting down the offense of his opponents. Throughout the fight, Bivol's jab layed down a technical structure that simply could not be broken, consistently delivering combinations in return for any strikes from Alvarez. While maintaining a consistent defense that did not allow enough clean strikes to land.

Nobert Kigen (men's) of Kenya, Bekelech Borecha (women's) of Ethiopia win Prague Marathon

  • Nobert Kigen of Kenya won the men's title at the Prague international marathon while Bekelech Borecha of Ethiopia was the fastest woman in the race. Kigen crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 54 seconds, beating a pair of Ethiopian runners. Kelkile Woldaregay finished second in 2:08:30 with Yitayal Zerihun another 14 seconds back in third. Borecha clocked her personal best of 2:22:56. 
  • More than 10,000 runners participated in the race that had two editions cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh wins Sunway Formentera Open chess tournament

  • Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged as champion in the 1st Chess Sunway Formentera Open 2022 chess tournament in Punta Prima, Spain. It was a hat-trick of titles for him after he had previously won the La Roda tournament and the Menorca Open before.
  • The 15-year old Gukesh (Elo 2637) settled for a draw with Armenian GM Haik M Martirosyan in the final round to win the title with eight points. He had defeated compatriot and second-seed K Sasikiran in the ninth and penultimate round.

Max Verstappen Won Miami Grand Prix 2022

  • F1 world champion Max Verstappen won the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for Red Bull after defeating the Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc. Leclerc (Ferrari) finished second and Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) placed third in the Miami Grand Prix 2022. The victory cut Leclerc's lead over Verstappen to 19 points in the championship, while the Monegasque's Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz completed the podium.
  • Verstappen's third victory of the season was hard fought, even though he led for the majority of the race. A crash between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris on Lap 41 triggered the safety car, and when racing resumed on lap 47, Leclerc pushed hard to retake the lead.

Annu Rani Breaks Her Own National Mark in Women's Javelin Throw

  • Olympian Annu Rani broke her own women's National record in the fourth Indian Open javelin throw meet in Jamshedpur. The 29-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, who was eighth in the 2019 World Championships in Doha, threw 63.82m in her opening attempt that bettered her previous best of 63.24 which came in the Federation Cup in Patiala in 2021. She had another good throw, 60.10, in her second attempt.
  • It was the eighth time Annu, the 2019 Asian silver medallist, was breaking the National record after first achieving the feat in 2014.
  • Madhya Pradesh's Vivek Kumar (under-20 men, 68.67m), Haryana's Yash Saini (under-18 boys, 67.42m) and Delhi's Disha (under-18 girls, 34.87m) won the gold in other categories on the opening day of the two-day meet.

India's Abhay Singh Wins Archi Factory Open Squash Tournament in France

  • Unseeded Abhay Singh of India won his first PSA tour title, defeating Robin Gadola of Switzerland, seeded fifth, 11-6, 14-16, 9-11, 11-9, 16-14 in the men's final of the Archi Factory Open squash tournament at Lorient (France). Abhay saved three match-points in the fifth and final game to triumph.
  • The 23-year-old had produced the biggest upset of the Challenger 5 level tournament, when he defeated top-seeded Ivan Perez of Spain in three games in the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins Madrid Open Title 2022

  • Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) clinched the men's singles Madrid Open title 2022 after beating the defending champion Alexander Zverev (Germany). Alcaraz has also defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (world No.1) to reach the final. It is his second Masters 1000 crown after Miami 2022 and his fourth title of the year. The 19-year-old is the youngest player since start of the ATP Tour in 1990 to defeat three top-five players at the same event.
  • Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) clinched the women's singles title to become the first African player to win a WTA 1000 event.

Priyanka Mohite Becomes First Indian Woman to Climb Five Peaks above 8,000 Metres

  • Priyanka Mohite from Maharashtra's Satara district became the first Indian woman to climb five peaks above 8000 metres. Priyanka achieved the milestone after climbing Mount Kanchenjunga. Priyanka works for a pharmaceutical research company in Bengaluru. In 2020, she also won the prestigious Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award. The 30-year-old climbed Mount Everest in 2013, Mount Lhotse in 2018, Mount Makalu in 2019 and Annapurna 1 in 2021. Notably, she is also the first Indian woman to climb Annapurna 1 and Makalu.
  • After 2013, she climbed the second mountain in 2018 as the snowstorm devastated Nepal in 2014 and the earthquake in 2015.
  • Notably, Priyanka wanted to climb Mount Kanchenjunga in 2020, but could not do so due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a teenager, she started climbing mountains in the Shayadri of Maharashtra.In 2012, Priyanka climbed Bandarpunch. Bandrapunch lies in the mountain massif of Uttarakhand's Garhwal division. In 2015, Priyanka climbed Mt. Menthosa which is 6443 m above sea level. It is the second-highest peak in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district.
