PBKS' Shikhar Dhawan Becomes First Player to Hit 700 Fours in IPL's History

  • Punjab Kings opening batter Shikhar Dhawan became the first player to hit 700 fours in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
  • Dhawan reached this feat during the last league stage match of IPL 2022, between PBKS and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium.
  • The batter has now a total of 701 IPL fours to his name. He is followed by David Warner and Virat Kohli, with 577 and 576 fours, respectively.

Manchester City Crowned 2021/22 English Premier League Champions

  • Manchester City were crowned 2021/22 Premier League champions their fourth title success in the last five seasons.
  • Manchester City's dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa in the final game of the season sealed the title and saw them finish one point ahead of second-place Liverpool at the end of a grueling battle for supremacy. In Manchester City's 38 league matches this season, they have won 29, drawn six, and lost three, scoring 99 goals in the process.

Indian Men's Compound Team Wins Successive World Cup Archery Gold

  • The Indian men's compound team won gold medal in Archery World Cup 2022 Stage-Two in Gwangju, South Korea. The Indian team came from behind, after trailing in first two sets, to prevail over France by two points in an intense finish to win the gold medal in successive World Cup stages. Fourth-seeded Indian men's team, comprising Abhishek Verma, Aman Saini, and Rajat Chauhan repeated the Stage-One final. They took over with an immaculate finish in the third end sealing a 232-230 win over their sixth-seeded rivals, Adrien Gontier, Jean Philippe Boulch, and Qentin Baraer. The same Indian trio had defeated France by one point, in the last World Cup final at Antalya in April 2022.
  • The team of Abhishek Verma and Avneet Kaur also won the bronze in the mixed event. They beat higher-seeded Turkey's Amircan Haney and Ayse Bera Suzer 156-155. For Kaur, this was her second bronze having won a team bronze in the women's event earlier.

India Finishes with 23 Medals at Bahrain Para Badminton

  • The Indian para badminton team finished with a rich haul of 23 medals, including seven golds, at the Bahrain Para Badminton International Championships in Manama. Promising doubles shuttler Manisha Ramdass shot into limelight with her twin gold medals, while Pramod Bhagat and Tarun Dhillon also clinched couple of gold medals each.
  • Manisha produced a strong show combining with Mandeep Kaur to win the gold in women's doubles SL3-SU5 finals. They took just 23 minutes to defeat the Paralympian pair of Palak Kohli and Parul Dalsukhbhai Parmar 21-11, 21-11.
  • Asian Youth Para Games champion Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan continued her good run of form to defeat England's Rachel Choong 21-15, 21-15, while Mandeep settled for the second place after going down to Turkey's Halime Yildiz 21-5, 21-17 in the women's SL3 finals.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers to win UEFA Europa League

  • Eintracht Frankfurt's 42-year wait for a European trophy is over. The German club ended its title drought with a penalty shootout win over Rangers in the Europa League final. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp came up with a big save at the end of extra time and another in the shootout to help give Frankfurt the 5-4 win on penalties. The game ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
  • Colombia striker Rafael Borré, who scored a second-half equalizer for Frankfurt, converted the decisive penalty to clinch the club's first European trophy since the 1980 UEFA Cup, a predecessor to the Europa League. The win also secures a first appearance in the Champions League next season for Frankfurt.
  • Rangers was trying to win its first European title since the Cup Winners' Cup in 1972. The Scottish club also lost to Zenit St. Petersburg in the 2008 UEFA Cup. It was trying to cap a comeback 10 years after it was sent to the lower divisions because of a financial meltdown.

Boxer Nikhat Zareen Becomes World Champion, Only Fifth Indian Woman to Achieve Feat

  • Nikhat Zareen, shedding tears of joy, hugged coach Bhaskar Bhatt after earning a 5-0 unanimous decision over Thailand's Jutamas Jitpong to become the world champion in the 52kg division at the World Championships in Istanbul. After her victory, Bhatt lifted Nikhat to his shoulder and she went out of the hall in a blaze of glory, amidst camera flashes and applause from the stands.
  • This glory was well earned for the 25-year-old boxer from Nizamabad in Telangana. She not only won the biggest prize of her start-stop career, but she also truly broke out of the giant shadow of multiple World Championships medallist Mary Kom. Injury, loss of confidence and Boxing Federation of India (BFI) officials' preference for London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom had all but stalled Nikhat's career and dreams.
  • Nikhat becomes only the fifth Indian woman boxer to win gold at the World Championships. For the record, Mary Kom has won six gold medals in the tournament. Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha KC are the only other women pugilists from India who have won gold at the World Championships.

Odisha Wins Hockey India Senior Women's National Championship

  • Odisha was crowned as the champions of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh with a thrilling 2-0 victory over Karnataka in the final of the competition.
  • The final match was a closely contested affair between Karnataka and Odisha. Both the teams started well, as they created several goal-scoring opportunities. However solid defensive performances from both the sides ensured that the match went into the half time with the scoreline reading 0-0. Punam Barla in the 34th minute opened the scoring in the match in the third quarter as Odisha picked up the lead. Ashim Kanchan Barla in the 59th minute sealed the game with a late goal as Odisha beat Karnataka 2-0 to claim the Championship.
  • Jharkhand beat Haryana 3-2 to earn third-place finish.
