Murali Sreeshankar Wins the Gold Medal at the 12th International Jumping Meeting in Kallithea, Gr...

  • India's premier long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won the gold medal at the 12th International Jumping Meeting in Kallithea, Greece, with an effort of 8.31 metres.Sreeshankar was followed by Swede Thobias Montler, who claimed silver with an 8.27m jump, and France's Jules Pommery, who bagged bronze with an 8.17m effort in the 10-player field. Only the top-three jumpers crossed the 8m mark. Meanwhile, Jeswin Aldrin finished fifth after he jumped 7.69m at the 17th Ibero-American Meeting in Huelva, Spain. Filip Pravdiva of Croatia (7.91m), Uruguay's Emiliano Lasa (7.82m) and Peruvian Jose Luis Mandros (7.77m) completed the top-three of the seven-player field.
  • The Tokyo Olympian is the current national record holder with a jump of 8.36m, which he had achieved in April 2022.

Indian GM Praggnanandhaa Loses to China's Ding Liren in Chessable Masters Final

  • Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa went down fighting to World No.2 Ding Liren in the tie-break of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters 2022 online tournament final.
  • The 29-year-old Liren used his experience to trump Praggnanandhaa in the second of the tie-break games. After the first blitz game ended in stalemate, the Chinese player won the next in 49 moves to dash the Indian teenager's hopes.
  • Earlier, in the second set, which he needed to win to force a tie-break, Praggnanandhaa got the all-important victory in the second game in 79 moves. The Indian GM had defeated the highly-rated Dutchman Anish Giri in the semifinal to become the first Indian player to reach the final of a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event. He had beaten world No.1 Magnus Carlsen for a second time during the preliminary phase in which he finished fourth and got past Wei Yi of China in the quarter-finals.

10-team ICC Women's ODI C'ship from Next Edition

  • The next edition of the ICC Women's Championship was announced by the ICC with two new teams added to the mix, making it a 10-team league. After the success of the ICC Women's Championship (IWC) 2014-16 and 2017-20, the tournament enters its third iteration for the years 2022-25, with Bangladesh and Ireland – ranked 9th and 10th in the MRF Tyres ICC Women's ODI Team Rankings – added to the mix this time around. They join Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies in pursuit of automatic qualification for the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup. Australia will be out to defend their crown, having won the previous two cycles of the IWC.
  • As a part of the revamped ICC Cricket World Cup pathway, five Associate women's teams – Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Thailand and the USA – have been given ODI status with immediate effect.

Asia Cup Hockey: India Defeats Indonesia to Qualify for Super 4

  • Young India men's hockey thrashed hosts Indonesia 16-0 to qualify for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup. The massive win not only secured India's passage into the knockout stage of the tournament but also shut the door on Pakistan.
  • India needed to beat Indonesia by a 15-0 margin or more to make it to the next round and the defending champions rode on splendid show from Dipsan Tirkey, who hammered five goals, and Sudev Belimagga, who sounded the board thrice.
  • Veteran SV Sunil, Pawan Rajbhar and Karthi Selvam scored a brace each while Uttam Singh and Nilam Sanjeep Xess scored a goal each.

Narinder Batra Steps Down as President of Indian Olympic Association

  • Narinder Batra tendered his resignation from the post of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president. Mr. Batra also confirmed that he will not be running again for IOA president. He is also the president of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
  • In a letter, Batra said that his association with FIH as its president will require more time due to various initiatives taken by the organisation. Batra added that it's time for someone with a fresh mind and ideas to succeed him into the role to which he was elected in 2017.

Justin Thomas Wins Playoff to Claim Second PGA Championship

  • Justin Thomas defeated fellow American Will Zalatoris by one stroke in a three-hole aggregate playoff to win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
  • Thomas, the 2017 PGA champion captured his second major title by going two-under par in the playoff with Zalatoris on one-under.
  • Thomas, who began the day seven strokes adrift, matched the greatest last-round comeback in PGA history, American John Mahaffey's seven-shot rally at Oakmont in 1978.
  • The title came after a heartbreaking last-hole collapse by Chile's Mito Pereira, who led all day only to end with a double-bogey disaster and squander the trophy.

Haryana Beat Jharkhand 2-0 to Win Hockey India Sub-Junior Women's National Championship in Imphal

  • Hockey Haryana emerged winners of the Hockey India sub-junior women's national championship 2022 after defeating Hockey Jharkhand 2-0 in the final in Imphal. Riya (13th) and Sejal (39th) scored a goal each to help Hockey Haryana successfully defend the title.
  • Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Hockey defeated Madhya Pradesh Hockey 3-0 to secure third place in the tournament. Pushpanjali Sonkar, Manisha Patel, and Purnima Yadav scored a goal each to help Uttar Pradesh Hockey seal third place in the competition for the second consecutive time.
