North Korea Tests Fire Hypersonic Missile "Hwasong-8"
North Korea successfully tested a new hypersonic missile called Hwasong-8, in a bid to increase the nation's capabilities for self-defence. The missile was one of the five most important new weapons systems laid out by North Korea in the five-year military development plan. This was the country's third missile test in a month. Earlier it tested a new type of cruise missile, as well as a new train-launched ballistic missile system.
Hypersonic missiles fly at lower altitudes compared to ballistic weapon systems and can attain more than five times the speed of sound, restricting the interception capabilities of adversaries.

India to Enhance Observation System Lorros at China, Pakistan Borders
Frequent incidents of security breach along the borders with China and Pakistan have prompted India to further enhance the Long Range Reconnaissance and Observation System (Lorros).
A panel of experts cleared a revised technical requirement to be implemented by border guarding forces like the Border Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
The sensor system that provides long-range surveillance both day and night should be able to recognise human targets more than 20 kilometres away, besides moving and stationary vehicles at a minimum distance of 40 km and 15 km, respectively, state the draft guidelines cleared by the panel. As per the existing specifications, the distance was 15 km for human targets and 24 km for vehicles.

V. R. Chaudhari Takes over as New IAF Chief from Bhadauria
Ace fighter pilot Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari who was in charge of the Ladakh sector during the peak of the crisis with China, took over as the Chief of Air Staff from Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria.
Bhadauria superannuated after 42 years of service and was architect of two mega fighter aircraft deals including 36 Rafales and 83 Mark1A indigenous Tejas jets.
Chaudhari, who has served in various important capacities at both field formations and air headquarters, has taken over the force at a time when the country is still in a standoff position at the borders with China and tensions in the region are high due to the situation in Afghanistan.
Chaudhari would also be responsible for the operationalisation of modern air defence systems like the S-400 from Russia, which are going to be inducted soon.

MoD Clears Acquisition Proposals Worth Rs. 13,165 crore
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) at a meeting accorded approval for procurement of 25 advanced light helicopters (ALH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under Buy Indian scheme.
The copters will cost Rs. 3,850 crore. The decision comes a day after an ageing Cheetah helicopter crashed near Patni Top in Jammu and Kashmir killing both pilots. The single-engine Cheetah helicopters are based on the 1950s' designed Alouette Aérospatiale 315B Lama of France and are produced by HAL. The ALH is twin-engine helicopter and is based on latest technologies.

France, Greece Sign Defence Agreement
France and Greece announced a multibillion euro defence deal, including Athens' decision to buy three French warships as part of a strategy to boost its defense capacities in the Eastern Mediterranean amid recurring tensions with longtime foe Turkey.
President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a defence and security strategic partnership in a joint news conference in Paris.
It will help protect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity of both states. Greece will purchase three French frigates to be built by defense contractor Naval Group in Lorient, in western France. The three-way strategic defense alliance announced by Australia, the UK and the US came as a shock to French officials.
DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight Test of Akash Prime Missile
A new version of the Akash missile was successfully flight-tested from the integrated test range at Chandipur in Odisha.
The missile —'Akash Prime' — intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial target mimicking an enemy aircraft in its maiden flight test.
As per DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy, Akash Prime system will further boost the confidence of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force as the Akash system is already inducted and now getting improved with more lethal missiles.
The Akash Prime is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the DRDO and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
The Akash SAM was developed to replace the Russian 2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful) missile system, currently in service.
The Czech Ministry of Defence has signed a deal to acquire the Spyder surface-to-air missile systems made by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The contract is worth 13.69 billion koruna (US$627 million.
As per Czech Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar, the purchase would enable Prague to replace its outdated, Soviet-designed 2K12 Kub surface-to-air systems with modern military technology.
Under the contract, the Czech defense industry will take part in the program, supplying products and services worth more than 30 percent of its value.
