Lewandowski Wins FIFA Best Player Award

  • Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski was named The Best FIFA Men's Player 2020, beating off competition from last year's winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • Lewandowski, who won the German league and cup double as well as the Champions League with Bayern, finished as top scorer in all three competitions and won the award for the first time. Bayern also led Poland to Euro 2020 qualification and was named the 2019-20 UEFA Men's Player of the Year in October.

Yogasana Recognised as a Competitive Sport by the Sports Ministry

  • The Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formal recognition of Yogasana as a competitive sport, with an aim of enhancing interest in Yoga among people around the globe. Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the competitions that will arise out of the recognition of Yogasana as a sport will enhance interest in Yoga among people around the globe.
  • As per Rijiju, the ministry is planning to include Yogasana as a sport discipline in Khelo India and in the University Games and we will also pitch it at the National Games but the aim and objective of any sport is to be included in Olympics.
  • The government's decision to recognise Yogasana as a competitive sport comes after 3-4 years of wide consultations with the stakeholders of the Yoga sector.

Simranjeet Enters Boxing World Cup Final

  • Indian boxer Simranjeet Kaur stormed into the 60 kg final of the World Cup in Cologne. Sonia Lather (57 kg) set up a semifinal clash against compatriot Manisha. In the men's section, Satish Kumar (+91 kg) and Mohammed Hussamuddin (57 kg) entered the semis.

Pakistan's Mohammad Amir Quits International Cricket

  • Pakistan fast bowler Mohammed Amir announced a dramatic end to his international cricket career, alleging that he has been "mentally tortured" by the management of his national board, which called the move a personal decision.
  • Amir had last year quit Tests to focus on white-ball cricket as he felt his body could not take the load of playing all the formats. He claimed 119 wickets from 36 Tests after making his debut in 2009. He served a five-year ban from 2010 to 2015 on charges of spot-fixing.
  • Amir was a part of the Pakistan squad which won the 2009 World T20 Cup and was also there when they won the Champions Trophy title in 2017.

Russia to Miss Tokyo Olympics

  • As per a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Russian athletes will not be able to participate in the Olympics or at any world championships under the country`s flag for the next two years.
  • CAS has issued its decision in the arbitration procedure between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Russian AntiDoping Agency (RUSADA), with 50 intervening parties, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
  • CAS said that its panel unanimously determined RUSADA to be "non-compliant" with the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) in connection with its failure to procure the delivery of the authentic LIMS data (Laboratory Information Management System) and underlying analytical data of the former Moscow Laboratory to WADA.

Qatar to Host 2030 Asian Games, Saudi Arabia in 2034

  • The 2030 Asian Games were awarded to Doha and the 2034 event went to Riyadh after a deal was struck between the rival nations.
  • The Qatari capital of Doha beat Saudi Arabian counterpart Riyadh for the 2030 Games in the vote at the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly.
  • Saudi Arabia is one of four countries which has imposed a trade and travel boycott on Qatar since 2017, though there have recently been indications the dispute could be resolved.

India to Play Their First Pink Ball Overseas Test

  • The Virat Kohli-led Indian side is all set to take on Tim Paine's Australia in the four-match Test series opener at the Adelaide Oval.
  • The match will be played under the lights and will be India's first pink-ball overseas Test. India has so far played just one day-night Test which they comfortably won against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in 2019.
  • The Aussies have played seven day-night Tests and have never lost one.

Zimbabwe to Host Qualifiers of 2023 ODI World Cup to be Held in India

  • Zimbabwe will host the qualifiers of the 2023 ODI World Cup between June 18 and July 9, according to a revised schedule announced by the ICC due to the postponements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • India, the hosts of the rescheduled 2023 ODI World Cup, along with seven other top Super League teams will qualify directly for the tournament to be held in October-November.
  • The bottom five teams from the Super League will compete in the 2023 World Cup qualifier, joining the best three teams from League 2.

Wrestling Nationals to be Held at Three Venues for Covid Safety

  • In a bid to keep grapplers, coaches and other officials safe from Covid-19, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will conduct its National Championships in three cities over three weekends in January and February.
  • While the dates are yet to be finalised, the WFI said that it expects wrestlers from all states to take part in the championships, which will be held in Noida, Agra and a yet-to-be-decided venue in Punjab. Strict Covid-19 protocols will be in place and the wrestlers, along with their entourages, will have to undergo RT-PCR tests before being allowed to take part.
  • If the event goes ahead as planned, wrestling will be the first major sport to conduct its national championships since the outbreak of the pandemic.
