BWF Bans Nikita Khakimov for 5 Years

  •  The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has imposed a 5-year ban on Russian shuttler Nikita Khakimov for charges of 'betting, wagering and irregular match results'. Khakimov was part of the Russian men's team that won the bronze medal at the 2020 European Team Championships. 
  • The 32-year-old Khakimov was found to breach BWF's integrity regulations, including approaching a player and offering money to manipulate a match, betting on badminton games and deliberately destroying evidence of a corruption offence to conceal from the BWF. 

Southee Takes 300th Wicket Test Wicket

  • Tim Southee became the third New Zealand bowler to capture 300 Test wickets as he dismissed two Pakistan batsmen to help push his side into a strong position.
  • Pakistan were 71-3, still 302 runs from their victory target of 373.
  • Southee joined Richard Hadlee (431) and Daniel Vettori (361).

Roger Federer to Skip 2021 Australian Open

  • Six-times champion Roger Federer has withdrawn from the 2021 Australian Open as he continues to work his way back to fitness from two knee operations earlier this year.
  • He last played a competitive match at the season-opening Grand Slam in January before he had to undergo surgery on his knee.
  • The start of the 2021 Australian Open has been delayed for three weeks until February 8 due to the country's strict border rules to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

ICC T20 and ODI Teams of the Year

  • The International Cricket Council announced the Men's T20I (Twenty 20 International), ODI (One Day International) and Test Teams of the decade. The teams were announced based on the consistency of the players over the period of last ten years.
  • The former Indian Captain MS Dhoni was named as the Captain of ODI and also the Captain of T20I.
  • The ICC T20I Team of the Decade also includes Rohit Sharma, Aaron Finch, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Rashid Khan, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, AB de Villiers.
  • The ICC ODI Team of the Decade includes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shakib Al Hasan, AB de Villiers, Ben Stokes, Trent Boult, Lasith Malinga, Imran Tahir, David Warner.
  • Virat Kohli was announced the Skipper of ICC Test team of the Decade.
  • In Women T20I Australia Meg Lanning was announced the Captain of the decade.

Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Soccer Player of the Century Award

  • Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo defeated his greatest rival Lionel Messi to win the Player of the Century Award at the Globe Soccer Award held in Dubai. Pep Guardiola was chosen as the coach of the century. 
  • Ronaldo and Messi are considered by many as one of the greatest footballers to have played the game. The duo has together claimed 11 Ballon d'Or awards, which speaks a lot about their skills.
  • The 35-year-old Ronaldo won league titles in England, Spain and Italy. Ronaldo has won the Champions League title five times.

Sporting Legends Back Sports Ministry's Fit India Movement

  • Some of India's sporting legends like Milkha Singh, Bhaichung Bhutia and Pullela Gopichand backed the government's Fit India Movement, and said that the initiative will not only help the athletes but will also keep the citizens physically agile.
  • Milkha, Bhutia, Gopichand and top Indian woman cricketer Mithali Raj took part in the second edition of the Fit India Dialogue which was anchored by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
  • During the dialogue, Rijiju and the panellists discussed many aspects of sports in India, including how athletes' attitude towards fitness has changed over the decade. 

Australian Open: Andy Murray Gets Wildcard

  • Britain`s former world number one Andy Murray has been awarded a wildcard for February`s Australian Open.
  • The main draw entry for the first Grand Slam of 2021 comes two years after Murray, the five-time runner-up in Melbourne, played what he feared would be his final professional match there, losing in the first round to Spain`s Roberto Bautista Agut.

BCCI AGM Approves 10 Teams for 2022 IPL

  •  The governing body of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ratified the entry of two new franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to make it a 10-team affair from 2022 during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ahmedabad.
  • From 2022 10 teams will participate in IPL instead of 8 teams.
  • In another major development, the Board, in principle, decided to back the ICC's bid for the inclusion of cricket, in the T20 format, in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics "after getting some clarifications from the International Olympic Committee".
