Para Archery World Championships: Pooja Jatyan Wins Historic Silver

  • Rookie para archer Pooja Jatyan scripted history as she became the first Indian to win a silver in an individual section of the Para World Championships.
  • Pooja lost to Italian Petrilli Vincenza in the summit clash to end her World Para Championships dream run with a silver medal.
  • Pooja, who is afflicted with polio since childhood, put up a valiant show racing to a 3-1 lead but the world No. 7 Italian used her vast experience to bounce back and down the Indian 3-7 (24-24, 23-21, 26-28, 24-26, 25-27).
  • India thus ended their best ever World Archery Para Championships with two silver medals, a first for the country.

Mayank Agarwal is Captain of Punjab Kings

  • IPL team Punjab Kings appointed opener Mayank Agarwal as the captain of the team ahead of IPL 2022. Agarwal has been the member of Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab) since 2018 and was the vice-captain to K.L. Rahul. In 2021 IPL, Agarwal had captained Punjab when Rahul was out due to acute appendicitis and had to undergo surgery.
  • Agarwal was one of the two retained picks by Punjab alongside uncapped left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh ahead of 2022 IPL Mega Auction.

Mexican Open: Nadal Beats Norrie in Acapulco for 91st Career Title

  • Rafael Nadal defeated Cameron Norris 6-4, 6-4 to win singles of the Mexican Open and extend his career-best start for a season to 15-0 as he won his 91st ATP title.
  • Nadal, who won his third title in 2022, including the Australian Open for his record 21st Grand Slam singles title, is three victories from tying Ivan Lendl's total of 94 for third place for most championships in the Open Era. Jimmy Connors leads with 109 and Roger Federer has 103.
  • The Mexican Open is a joint professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts.
  • It was played on outdoor red clay courts until 2013. The change to hard courts was introduced in 2014. The Mexican Open is part of the ATP Tour 500 series on the ATP Tour, and of the WTA International tournaments on the WTA Tour.

Rohit Sharma Becomes Most-capped Player in T20I Cricket

  • Adding another feather to his cap, India captain Rohit Sharma became the most-capped T20I player after taking part in his 125th game during the third and final match against Sri Lanka at the picturesque HPCA Stadium.
  • He went past veteran Pakistan batter Shoaib Malik (124 T20Is) for the historic feat.
  • Rohit is also the only Indian cricketer to have played more than 100 T20Is. Former captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni (retired, 98 games) and Virat Kohli (97) follow him at second and third position, respectively among Indian players.

Mirabai Chanu Qualifies for CWG 2022

  • Mirabai Chanu is set to represent India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after securing a gold medal in the 55 kg category by lifting a total of 191 kg in the Singapore Weightlifting International. Chanu who was competing in the 55 kg category for the very first time lifted 191 kg (86kg+105kg) to stand on top of the podium in an uncompetitive field.
  • The CWG Qualification event would allow the top 8 lifters in each category to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham out of which Chanu assured a spot not only in the 49 kg category but also in the 55 kg category for India.

Mayank Agarwal Set to Captain Punjab Kings in Upcoming IPL

  • India batter Mayank Agarwal is set to captain Punjab Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League.
  • Agarwal, who is part of the Indian Test team, was one of the two players retained by Punjab Kings alongside young pacer Arshdeep Singh ahead of the mega auction earlier this month.
  • Punjab, who went into the auction with the maximum purse, made good use of the money by getting the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada and buying back left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar and explosive Tamil Nadu batter Shahrukh Khan.

IPL 2022 Set to be Held in Four Venues in Mumbai and Pune

  • As per reports, the matches of the upcoming Indian Premier League will be held in four venues across two cities -- Mumbai and Pune.
  • While 55 matches will be held in Mumbai across three venues -- Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil and Brabourne Stadium, Pune's MCA International Stadium will play host to 15 games.

Ajit Agarkar Joins Delhi Capitals as Assistant Coach

  • Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals announced the appointment of former India pacer Ajit Agarkar as the team's new assistant coach.
  • The 44-year-old, with 288 ODI and 58 Test wickets to his name, has represented Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
  • Agarkar joins the Delhi Capitals coaching staff of Ricky Ponting (Head Coach), Pravin Amre (Assistant Coach) and James Hopes (Bowling Coach).

Kusum to represent India in 2022 Asian Junior Fencing Championship

  • Kusum, a trainee of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, Chandigarh, fencing club and student of Post-Gradate Government College, Sector 11, was selected to represent the country in the 2022 Asian Junior Fencing Championship, to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • The event is being held from February 24 to March 3. She was selected on the basis of her performance in the Junior Nationals. Kusum, whose father is a cook and mother a housewife, started practising fencing at the age of 13.

Nandini Secures India's First Medal at 73rd Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament

  • Nandini (+81kg) assured India of its first medal at the ongoing 73rd Strandja Memorial boxing tournament in Sofia by advancing to the semi-finals with a dominating win over Kazakhstan's Valeriya Axenova in the quarter-finals.
  • She will square off against another Kazakh, Lazzat Kungeibayeva, in the semi-finals. Kungeibayeva is a former world champion.
  • Strandja Cup and officially known as the (Strandja Memorial) is an international amateur boxing tournament held annually in Bulgaria. The Strandja Cup is the oldest international amateur boxing competition in Europe. The first tournament was held in 1950 at the Yunak stadium in Sofia.

World Para Championships: Archers make History

  • India scripted history in the World Archery Para Championships as the duo of Shyam Sundar Swami and Jyoti Baliyan assured the country of at least a silver medal by reaching the final of the compound mixed team open event.
  • Sundar and Baliyan downed the French pair of Julie Chupin and Thierry Joussaume 151-145 in the semi-finals. In the quarter-finals, the Indians had pipped Maria Andrea Virgilio and Matteo Bonacina of Italy 147-146.
  • India's para-archers have won medals in almost every event since 2017, except in the World Championships.
