Priyanka Nutakki Becomes the 23rd Woman Grandmaster of India

  • Priyanka Nutakki secured her final WGM-norm at MPL's forty-seventh National Women Chess Championship. She became India's twenty-third Woman Grandmaster. She is from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Priyanka Nutakki scored her first WGM-norm in January 2019 and crossed the 2300 rating criteria in the next two months. However, much like a lot of players, the Covid-19 pandemic delayed her title hopes.
  • Priyanka braved the odds, resumed playing over-the-board tournaments in October 2021 at ChessMood Open. In her third over-the-board tournament of the year, she scored her second WGM and maiden IM-norm at the 7th Sunway Sitges Open 2021.

Lance Klusener Rejoins Zimbabwe Cricket Team as Batting Coach

  • Months after he quit his job as Afghanistan's head coach, former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener rejoined the Zimbabwe senior men's national team as their batting coach. The 50-year-old Klusener's appointment was confirmed by the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Board.
  • Klusener will take over from former Zimbabwe cricketer Stuart Matsikenyeri, who will now move to the position of assistant coach, while India's Lalchand Rajput remains in charge as head coach of the national side. Klusener previously served as Zimbabwe's batting coach between 2016 and 2018. Klusener had quit his job as Afghanistan head coach in November last year, announcing that he won't be seeking an extension after 2021.

South Africa's Mokoka Breaks World Record in First 50 km Race

  • South Africa's Stephen Mokoka, who had never run a 50 km race before, broke the world record on home soil in Gqeberha.
  • Mokoka crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds, beating the record set by Ethiopian Ketema Bekele Negasa (2:42:07) last year.
  • Ethiopia's Amelework Fikadu Bosho dominated the women's race to finish in a time of 3:04:58, nearly four minutes ahead of the rest but 34 seconds short of the world record.

ISSF World Cup

  • India's Rhythm Sangwan and Anish Bhanwala won the gold medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol mixed team event on the concluding day of the ISSF World Cup.
  • The duo emerged victorious by a margin of 17-7 over Thailand in the gold medal match.
  • India topped the medal's tally with four gold, two silver and one bronze as the year's first marquee shooting event concluded in Cairo, Egypt. On the final day of the competitions, India won a silver in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event, going down to Germany 7-17 in the decider.
  • With two medals on the final day, India topped the medals tally ahead of Norway, who won six medals - three gold, one silver and two bronze. France was third, with three gold.

Mithali Raj Becomes 1st Woman Cricketer to Appear at 6 Cricket World Cups

  • Indian women's cricket team skipper Mithali Raj on Sunday became the first woman, and only the third cricketer ever, to appear at six ICC Women's Cricket World Cups.
  • Mithali ensured the record enters a new decade -- former Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad appeared in the first six Men's Cricket World Cups between 1975 and 1996 with Sachin Tendulkar beginning his World Cup career in 1992.
  • As skipper the records keep coming, the right-hander now equals Australian legend Belinda Clark by captaining at her fourth ICC Women's World Cup -- Clark's tenure spanned from 1993 to 2005.

Ravi Shastri Launches Cricket Academy in Hyderabad

  • Former Indian Cricket Team captain and coach Ravi Shastri launched Coaching Beyond, a cricket academy in Hyderabad. Shastri launched the academy along with Bharat Arun and R. Sridhar.
  • Shastri also inaugurated St John's Sports Foundation at the launching event of the cricket academy.
  • Shastri said that at Coaching Beyond, we are committed to making the youth sports experience positive and enriching for all our trainees. We would want to make sports a part of their life, whether they pursue it professionally or otherwise.

IPL 2022: RuPay Official Partner

  • Domestic card payment network RuPay will be an official partner for the IPL tournament 2022.
  • This is a multi-year partnership," National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said.
  • NPCI had launched RuPay, the first-of-its-kind domestic card payment network in the country.
  • The announcement regarding RuPay becoming an official partner was made by the Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC).

Russian, Belarusian Athletes Barred from Beijing Paralympics

  • Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from the Winter Paralympics in Beijing on the eve of the Games following threats of boycotts by other teams over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said. Belarus was a key staging area for the invasion, which was launched a week ago.
  • The decision came a day after the IPC gave athletes from the two countries the green light to participate as neutrals, saying that the governing body had followed its rules and that 'athletes were not the aggressors'. But that decision led to an outcry and threats from other countries' National Paralympic Committees (NPC) to boycott the Games.
