FIFA Gets into Streaming Platform Business with Own Soccer Version

  • FIFA is getting into the streaming platform business with a soccer version of Netflix and Amazon Prime. The service is free and largely featuring documentaries and some live games at the launch but it could eventually be a way for FIFA to broadcast World Cup matches itself at a cost.
  • While increasingly positioning itself as a rival to existing media companies, FIFA+ will also be used by the governing body to promote its sponsors.
  • The launch could see FIFA shift content off YouTube that it has previously used to broadcast classic matches and sports politics events. The recent FIFA Congress in Qatar was not streamed on the long-standing video sharing website unlike previously.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Appointed as Member Board Representative of ICC Cricket Committee

  • BCCI secretary Jay Shah was appointed to the ICC Cricket Committee as the Member Board Representative while Mahela Jayawardene was reappointed as Past Player representative.
  • In line with a previous recommendation from the ICC Men's Cricket Committee, the CEC agreed that more neutral match officials should be utilised as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires.

Boxers Get a Gold Rush in Thailand

  • Indian boxers Govind Sahani (48 kg), Ananta Pralhad Chopade (54 kg) and Sumit (75 kg) struck gold at the Thailand Open in Phuket, notching up comprehensive wins in their final bouts.
  • Sahani and Sumit dominated their bouts from start to finish and won with 5-0 margins against local pugilists Natthaphon Thuamcharoen and Peetapat Yeasungnoen, respectively.
  • Chopade, on the other hand, displayed a good mix of aggression and defence to topple Thai boxer Ritthiamon Saengsawang by a unanimous decision.
  • The Indian contingent bettered its last edition's haul of eight medals — bringing home 10 medals, including three gold, four silver, and three bronze, with three boxers yet to fight in their final bouts.

1st Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament Held in Jamshedpur

  • The Sports Authority of India approved a total amount of Rs. 75 Lakh to host the Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament over six phases. TATA Archery Academy, Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) hosted the first phase of the tournament on April 12 and 13.
  • The tournament was held across the Recurve and Compound events in the senior, Junior and Cadet Categories, and was conducted as per the World Archery Rules. The Archery Association of India (AAI), in collaboration with the Jharkhand Archery Association and TATA Steel, are organising the tournament.
  • The six Women's National Ranking tournaments will be held every alternate month with the final phase scheduled for December 2022. The cumulative points of the 5 phases shall be calculated to arrive at the ranking of the top 16 archers for the final phase in December wherein the top 16 archers shall be given cash awards, amounting to a total of Rs. 37.5 Lakh.

Charleston Open: Sania Mirza-Lucie Hradecka Lose in Final

  • Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka's splendid run at the Charleston Open ended after they lost the title clash 2-6 6-4 7-10 to Andreja Klepac and Magda Linette.
  • Mirza and Hradecka had a stunning run at the WTA 500 event, reaching the women's doubles final after pulling off a major upset by stunning top seeds Zhang Shuai and Caroline Dolehide in the semi-finals.
  • Mirza and Hradecka had also reached the semifinal of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

Hardik Pandya Becomes Fastest Indian to Smash 100 sixes in IPL

  • Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya became the fastest Indian to smash 100 sixes in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
  • The all-rounder reached the milestone in a total of 1046 balls. He also became the third-fastest player in the world to smash 100 sixes, after West Indies' Chris Gayle and Andre Russell.
  • Hardik achieved this feat during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes First Indian in T20 and also First in Indian Premier League (IPL) to ...

  • Ashwin became the first player in the Indian Premier League's (IPL) 14-year history to "retire out". Before Ashwin, only three other cricketers, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, Bhutan's Sonam Tobgay, and Bangladesh's Sunzamul Islam, had opted for "retiring out".
  • Ashwin's decision impressed many cricket lovers who were not aware of this rule.
  • According to rules laid by the International Cricket Council (ICC), a batsman can choose to retire anytime during the inning when the "ball is dead" after informing the umpires. "Dead ball" is a technical term that loosely means a time during the match when both teams are not playing.

  • Leclerc extended his lead in the drivers' championship while claiming his second win of the season following victory in the season-opening race in Bahrain.
  • Leclerc was able to hold off Red Bull rival Max Verstappen during the opening laps and defended well mid-race under safety car conditions to pull away for a decisive 20.524-second victory.
  • Verstappen, the world champion, endured another frustrating race when a mechanical failure ended his hopes while he was running second 39 laps into the 58-lap race.

  • In the World Doubles Squash Championships, India's Dipika Pallikal teaming up with Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa, has won mixed doubles and women's doubles titles at Glasgow.
  • Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal, seeded second, defeated the fourth-seeded English pair Adrian Waller and Alison Waters 11-6, 11-8 in the final to claim the mixed doubles title, becoming India's first-ever World Doubles squash champions.
  • Later, Pallikal paired up with Joshna Chinappa to claim the women's doubles title. With this win, Dipika doubled India's and her own world championships, medal count. Third-seeds Indians oust England's Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters, the second seeds, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 in a hard-fought final.

Hockey India Men National Championship 2022 Kick-starts in Bhopal

  • The prestigious 12th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2022 began in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The 12-day tournament will witness 28 teams vie for top honours.
  • In its previous edition, the tournament was won by Hockey Punjab after they beat Uttar Pradesh Hockey in a thrilling shootout while Hockey Karnataka finished third having beaten Hockey Maharashtra 5-2 in the third/fourth placing match.

  • Top Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the semi-finals of the Korea Open Super 500 badminton tournament with contrasting wins in Suncheon. Third seed Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, notched up her 17th win over familiar foe Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-10, 21-16 in the women's singles quarter-finals.
