Andrew Mcdonald Appointed As Australia's New Head Coach

  • Andrew McDonald has been appointed head coach of Australia in all three formats for the next four years after overseeing Australia's Test series victory in Pakistan in a caretaker role. McDonald served as an assistant under Justin Langer since 2019 and took the reins in Pakistan after Langer declined the offer of a short-term contract extension and promptly resigned. The 40-year-old was widely expected to take the head coach role on a permanent basis.
  • McDonald already has batting coach Michael Di Venuto, fielding coach Jeff Vaughan and spin bowling consultant Sri Sriram on his staff but will be looking for a full-time bowling coach, having occupied the role before stepping up as caretaker.

Cricketer Joe Root Steps Down From England's Test Captaincy

  • Joe Root stepped down as England Test captain following a run of poor results capped by dispiriting tours of Australia and the Caribbean. The 31-year-old was appointed as Alastair Cook's successor in 2017 and holds the record for the most number of matches and wins as England Test captain. His 27 victories put him ahead of Michael Vaughan (26), Alastair Cook, and Andrew Strauss (24 each). But of his last 17 Tests in charge, he won just one.
  • Root had been an exceptional role model during his tenure, balancing the demands of Test captaincy whilst continuing to shine brilliantly through his own personal performances.

Haryana Crowned Champions Of Senior Hockey Nationals

  • Haryana won the Senior Men's National Hockey Championship, beating Tamil Nadu 3-1 in the shootout after the final ended 1-1 in regulation time. The thrilling Final encounter started with Deepak giving Hockey Haryana a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of the match, scoring an early goal for his side. But Saravana Kumar was able to quickly level the score, getting the equaliser in the 10th minute of the match for the Hockey Unit Of Tamil Nadu to make it 1-1.  The two teams put on a terrific defensive display for the remainder of the regulation time, preventing any goals on their respective ends and thereby pushing the match into a Shootout.
  • In the Shootout, Hockey Haryana scored thrice in the first four attempts, while Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu scored in the first attempt but missed in the following three attempts. Thus, Hockey Haryana emerged as the winners of the match, winning the trophy for the first time since 2011.

Danish Open Swimming: Sajan Prakash Wins Gold, Vedaant Madhavan Bags Silver

  • Competing for the first time in an international meet in 2022, Sajan Prakash clocked 1.59.27 seconds to finish on top podium. Denmark's Heorhij Lukashev followed with the timing of 1:59.89 and Oliver Sogaard-Andersen, 2:02.81, came third. Ace Indian swimmer Sajan Prakash won the gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly event at the Danish Open 2022 in Copenhagen.
  • In 2021, Sajan Prakash clocked the national record timing of 1:56:38 in the 200m butterfly to become the first Indian swimmer to qualify for the Olympics directly by breaching 'A' standard time. He also became the first and only Indian swimmer to make it to two Olympic Games.
  • At the last Asian Games in 2018, Sajan Prakash finished fifth in the 200m butterfly event after becoming the first Indian swimmer since 1986 to qualify for the finals.
  • Meanwhile, In the men's 1500m freestyle event, 16-year-old Vedaant Madhavan, son of Indian actor R Madhavan, achieved his personal best time of 15.57.86 to clinch the silver medal in the 10-swimmer final.

  • The Santosh Trophy has long lost its sheen as the country's premier domestic football tournament. It has become more of a youth event or a showcase for fresh talents looking to impress leading clubs.
  • But its 75th edition, which kicked off -- at Malappuram -- is likely to be among its most successful ones in recent times. That is because of the fans in this part of the world.
  • You would come across some of India's craziest football fans in the district of Malappuram. During a tour of the district during the last World Cup, four years ago, this correspondent had seen houses painted according to the jersey colours of teams like Brazil, Argentina and France. One had also met a fishmonger, who sold fish at half the market-rate on Brazil's match days.

India to Host Street Child Cricket World Cup in 2023

  • India is ready to host the Street Child Cricket World Cup in 2023. This World Cup is organized by Street Child United and Save the Children India, the Street Child Cricket World Cup 2023 will welcome 22 teams from 16 countries to India.
  • Countries that will participate are Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Burundi, England, Hungary, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. In addition to the partnership between Street Child United and Save the Children the SCCWC 2023 will also collaborate with World Bank, ICC and the British High Commission.

Young Indian Grandmaster R. Pragganandhaa Wins Prestigious Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament

  • Young Indian Grandmaster, R Pragganandhaa won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament in Reykjajvik, Iceland with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The 16-year-old Pragganandhaa defeated compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round to emerge sole winner.
  • The highly-rated Indian remained unbeaten through the nine rounds and finished with wins over Matthieu Cornette of France and Gukesh in the last two rounds. He had recently hogged the limelight after stunning world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in an online tournament.

Netherlands lift fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title, beating Germany 3-1

  • The Netherlands lifted their fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title after beating Germany 3-1 in the final at Potchefstroom, South Africa. Giving an early lead to the Netherlands, Danique van der Veerdonk scored first goal in seven minutes. Then, Germany's Sophia Schwabe equalized the score in 32nd minute. Just after two minutes, Tessa Beetsma restored her Dutch team's lead to 2-1.
  • Beetsma then bagged her brace in 44th minute. With a superb performance, the Netherlands conceded their first goal of the tournament in summit clash. Till the final, the Netherlands had scored 46 goals and conceded none. Earlier, England defeated India 3-0 in the shoot-out after a 2-2 draw to claim the bronze medal in the third-place match.

Odisha CM Unveils Logo of 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the logo of 2023 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup, to be held in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
  • The prestigious quadrennial tournament is scheduled from January 13 to 29.
  • Hockey India and its official partner Odisha will host the marquee event for the second consecutive time in the country after 2018.
  • The 15th edition of the showpiece will be staged in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, where the country's largest hockey stadium is being constructed. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 20,000.

Rohit Sharma Becomes 2nd Indian after Virat Kohli to Score 10,000 Runs in T20

  • Rohit Sharma has became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to score 10 thousand runs in the T20 cricket. India and Mumbai Indians skipper achieved this milestone during the IPL 2022 match of Mumbai Indians against Punjab Kings in Pune.
  • Rohit Sharma became the seventh batter overall to reach the 10 thousand runs in T20s. West Indian legend Chris Gayle is leading the list of run-getters with 14,562 runs to his name followed by Pakistan's Shoaib Malik (11698), West Indies Kieron Pollard (11474), Australia's Aaron Finch (10499), Virat Kohli (10379) and Australia's David Warner (10373) as of April 2022.

FIFA U17 Women's World Cup: Goa, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai to Host Tournament in October

  • World football body, FIFA named Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai as the host cities for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup to be held in October 2022. FIFA also announced that the draw for the marquee tournament will take place in Zurich on June 24.
  • In order to ensure the safety of the players involved and the other participants in the tournament, Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Stadium, Goa's Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium have been announced as the three venues that will welcome some of the brightest emerging talents and future stars of women's football.
  • Following the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FIFA, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed the host cities after undertaking a comprehensive review and consultation process.

Shooting, Wrestling Not Part of 2026 Commonwealth Games

  • In a big jolt to India, the host of the Commonwealth Games 2026 dropped wrestling, shooting and archery from its initial sports programme list.
  • The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed Victoria in Australia as the host of the 2026 edition. This would be the first edition to be held across several cities, including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland.
  • The disciplines that the organising committee has included in the initial list are aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, triathlon and weightlifting. However, the organisers have clarified that they will add a few more disciplines later this year.
