Bahrain's Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Passes Away
Bahrain's Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, the world's longest serving Prime Minister and a staunch ally of neighbouring Saudi Arabia and the United States, passed away at the age of 84.
Sheikh Khalifa was a dominant figure in the Gulf island's politics for much of his near half century in power.
Khalifa, the uncle of King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, had served as Prime Minister since the Sunni Muslim-led island kingdom declared independence from Britain in 1971, almost half a century. The al-Khalifa family has ruled since 1783.

Indian Diplomat Vidisha Maitra in UN Advisory Committee
Indian diplomat, Vidisha Maitra has been elected to the UN's Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ). The election was a tightly contested one but Maitra won with 126 UN members supporting her candidature for the only post for the Asia-Pacific group while 64 voted for the opposing candidate who was from Iraq.
India has been a member of the committee since its inception in 1946. India's win in this committee comes as India also prepares to take a seat as one of 10 non-permanent members in the UN Security Council for a two year period starting 1 January 2021.
A. K. Singh to Head Petronet LNG
Indian Oil Corp (IOC) director-pipelines Akshay Kumar Singh will be the new Managing Director and Chief Executive of the country's biggest gas importer, Petronet LNG Ltd. He will replace Prabhat Singh who completed his 5-year term.
Petronet is a joint venture of IOC, GAIL, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and BPCL. The four state-owned firms hold 12.5 per cent stake each in the company whose chairman is the Oil Secretary. Petronet operates liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Dahej in Gujarat and Kochi in Kerala.

Veteran Author Father Valles Pases Away
Veteran author and columnist Father Carlos Gonzalvez Valles SJ, also known as Father Valles, passed away at the age of 95.
He distinguished himself in diverse areas such as mathematics and Gujarati literature. He was also passionate about serving society.
Saddened by his demise, the priest also translated many mathematical concepts into Gujarati and coined special terms for them. He contributed regularly to Suganitam, the first mathematical review in an Indian language.
In 1960, the author penned a book titled Sadachar, which was published with the help of his mother. He also wrote for a monthly called Kumar and won its annual Kumar Prize for best writing. Besides, he also wrote in the Sunday supplement of Gujarat Samachar in a column called 'Navi Pedhine' or 'the new generation'.
Aloke Singh New CEO of Air India Express
Air India Express appointed Aloke Singh as its new Chief Executive Officer. Singh has taken charge at airline's corporate headquarters in Kochi, Kerala.
Aloke Singh has three decades of diverse experience in air transport and travel, with leadership roles in Air India, Alliance Air and a Gulf-based national carrier.
Before taking on the current assignment at Air India Express, Singh was associated with an aviation advisory and consulting firm in New Delhi. He also co-founded a travel venture as an entrepreneur.
Singh holds an MBA from Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi and has attended London School of Economics on a Chevening Fellowship.

Indian-American to Co-lead Biden's First Initiative
While several Indian-Americans, namely Richard Verma, Nisha Biswal, Sonal Shah and Seema Sadanandan, might figure in the new Biden administration to be announced later this month, an Indian-American will play a prominent role right away in the President-elect's first initiative after beating Donald Trump.
Former surgeon-general Vivek Murthy is tipped to co-lead a 12-member group that will join battle with the raging COVID-19 pandemic in the US, which has registered over one lakh positive cases every day.
The "COVID-19 task force" will also be co-led by former food and drug administration commissioner David Kessler and Yale University professor Marcella Nunez-Smith.
Murthy, a registered Democrat, was the Surgeon-General of the United States from 2014 to 2017.
According to reports, Biden has been receiving briefings for months from health experts, including Murthy and Kessler, a former FDA commissioner. Other experts who have briefed Biden include Celine Gounder of New York University and Yale's Marcella Nunez-Smith.
The Biden task force could start holding public briefings from next week till Inauguration Day on January 20.

Yashvardhan Sinha New Chief Information Commissioner
Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha took oath as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).
President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to Sinha as the CIC at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The post was lying vacant since the retirement of Bimal Julka on August 26.
Sinha will have tenure of about three years as the CIC.
