Using the Subaru, Keck and Gemini Telescopes, an international team of astronomers discovered a collection of 12 galaxies that existed about 13.0 billion years ago.
This is the earliest protocluster ever found. One of the 12 galaxies is a giant object, known as Himiko, which was discovered a decade ago by the Subaru Telescope and named for a mythological queen in ancient Japan.
This discovery suggests that large structures such as protoclusters already existed when the universe was only about 800 million years old, 6 per cent of its present age.

NASA Visualization Shows a Black Hole's Warped World
NASA's new visualization shows a black hole's warped world and it looks like something you would see in a trippy carnival mirror.
The moving images replicate a black hole's appearance where infalling matter has collected into a flimsy, scorching structure called an accretion disk. Extreme gravity from the black hole skews light emitted by different regions of the disk, resulting in the bizarre warped view.
Bright knots constantly form and dissipate in the disk as magnetic fields wind and twist through the churning gas.
Nearest the black hole, the gas orbits at close to the speed of light, while the outer portions spin a bit more slowly.
This difference stretches and shears the bright knots, producing light and dark lanes in the disk.
Technology Awards Presented To Four Labs
President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan presented the Technology Awards and other prizes for excellence in science and technology, instituted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
The winners of the CSIR Technology Awards are - Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow; Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar; Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad; and National Aerospace Laboratories, Bengaluru.
The awards were instituted in 1990 to foster and encourage multi-disciplinary in-house team efforts and external interaction for technology development, transfer and commercialization.
MoU To Set Up Kalam Centre For Science And Technology At CUJ Signed
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence and Central University of Jammu (CUJ) for the establishment of Kalam Centre for Science and Technology (KCST) at the university.
The MoU signing ceremony was held in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The main objective of the MoU is to undertake and facilitate multidisciplinary directed basic and applied research and technology development in the identified research verticals, namely, computational system security and sensors.

NASA To Pay $4.6 Bn To Buy 6 Spacecraft For Artemis Moon Missions
NASA has contracted American global aerospace company Lockheed Martin to develop minimum six and as many as 12 spacecraft for its Artemis lunar exploration programme.
NASA has designated a total of around $4.6 billion for six spacecrafts.

Planned For Six Months, India's Mars Mission Mangalyaan Completes Five Years
The Mars Orbiter Mission is the only artificial satellite that could image the full disc of Mars in one view frame and also image the far side of Deimos.
The Mangalyaan mission, which was initially meant to last six months, completed five years of orbiting Mars and is likely to continue for some more time.
In the past five years, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India's first interplanetary endeavour, helped India's space agency prepare a Martian Atlas based on the images provided by the orbiter.
India International Science Festival to be held in Kolkata from November 5 to 8, 2019
The fifth edition of India International Science Festival (IISF) will be held in Kolkata from November 5-8, 2019, Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan announced.
More than 12,000 participants, including 8,000 students, are expected to attend the event.
350 students will replicate the experiment of wireless communication conducted by Jagdish Chandra Bose.
The DST, Department of Biotechnology, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research and the Ministry of Earth Sciences are major government sponsoring bodies for the event.
It is being organised in collaboration with Vigynana Bharati, an RSS-linked scientific body.
The IISF will also hosts 28 different events such as Agriculture Scientists' Meet, Vigyan Samagam, Young Scientists Conference, Vigyanika-International Science Literature Festival, International Science Film Festival of India.
