Manpreet Kaur Creates New National Record in Women's Shot Put
Shot putter Manpreet Kaur from Haryana qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by clocking 18.06 m on Day 2 of the 61st National inter-state senior athletics championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The qualification mark set for CWG was 17.76 m. Manpreet's effort saw her break the National record of 17.96 m she had set way back in 2015. The second and third place was bagged by Uttar Pradesh's Kiran Baliyan (16.84 m) and Maharashtra's Abha Khatua (16.69 m).
Earlier, Manpreet had thrown the iron ball at a distance of 18.86 m at the Asian GP in 2017. But that record was considered invalid after Manpreet failed four dope tests and was banned for four years. Manpreet's ban came to an end in 2021 and ever since, she has been slowly but steadily making her way back to the record books.
Viktor Axelsen, Chen Yufei Clinch Singles Titles at BWF Indonesia Masters
Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen and Chen Yufei clinched the respective men's and women's singles titles at the BWF Indonesia Masters 2022 at the Istora Senayan. Denmark's Axelsen needed just 41 minutes to secure a comfortable straight-game victory over his rival, third-seeded Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei. The Dane wrapped up proceedings 21-10, 21-12 against the world number four, clinching his third individual title of the season in the process. He had previously clinched victory at both the prestigious All England Open, as well as at the European Championships in Madrid.
Meanwhile, the Chinese shuttler Chen was tested by Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, who was seeking a rare victory over the Chinese. The Olympic champ was taken to a third-game decider before she finally saw off Intanon's challenge 21-16, 18-21, 21-15. For Chen, triumph in Jakarta marks a first individual tournament victory since she won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and her first on tour since claiming the Malaysia Masters trophy in January 2020.

Haryana Wins Khelo India Youth Games 2021 Title
Hosts Haryana won the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2021 title with 52 gold medals on the final day. Haryana also won 39 silver and 46 bronze medals, taking their overall medal tally to 137 medals – the highest cumulative haul by any state. The late surge helped Haryana leapfrog the 2020 champions Maharashtra on the KIYG medals table. The Khelo India Youth Games 2021 started on June 4 across multiple venues with Haryana's Panchkula hosting the bulk of the events. The Games, which are a part of the Indian government's Khelo India initiative, concluded on June 13.
This was Haryana's second KIYG title. Haryana won the inaugural title in 2018 but finished second to Maharashtra in the next two seasons. This was the fourth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games. Some 4,700 athletes, including 2,262 women, from all of India's 36 states and Union Territories participated at KIYG 2021.
Rahul Srivatshav of Telangana became India's 74th Grandmaster, achieving the title after breaking the 2500 (Elo points) barrier in live FIDE ratings during the 9th Cattolica Chess Festival 2022 in Italy. The 19-year old player reached the 2500 Elo live rating mark after drawing his 8th round game against Grandmaster Levan Pantsulaia in the Cattolica event. His current Elo rating is 2468. Srivatshav had already secured five GM norms and achieved the title when he crossed the rating threshold of 2500.
Bharath Subramaniyam had become the country's 73rd GM in January 2022. The legendary Viswanathan Anand is India's first GM, which he became way back in 1988.
India Creates History by Qualifying for FIFAe Nations Cup 2022
India created history as they qualified for the FIFAe Nations Cup 2022, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from July 27 to July 30. The FIFAe Nations Cup is the international football governing body's (FIFA) official inter-nation esports football competition. Gamers play in a 2v2 format along with a substitute. It will be the first time India will play in FIFA's showpiece esports event. France won the inaugural FIFAe Nations Cup in 2020 by beating Argentina in the final in London. The 2021 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India missed out on a playoff spot in the first season but finished above heavyweights such as Italy, Argentina and Spain in the 2021 rankings. For the 2022 edition, India qualified for the Asia/Oceania regional playoffs after a successful stint in the play-ins. During this period, India also achieved their highest global ranking of 19.
Saanapathi Gurunaidu Clinches Gold Medal at IWF Youth World Championship
Indian weightlifter Saanapathi Gurunaidu clinched Gold medal in men's 55 kilogram event at the IWF Youth World Championships in Leon, Mexico. Two other Indian weightlifters Vijay Prajapati and Akansha Kishor Vyavhare clinched silver medals on the opening day of the event. Saanapathi won Gold medal in men's 55 kilogram event with total lift of 230 kg. He lifted 104 kg in Snatch winning Silver while 126 kilogram lifting in Clean and Jerk to finish on the top to grab the Gold medal.
Akanksha won the medal in the Women's 40 kg category. She finished first in the Snatch portion of the event, lifting 59 kg, and third in the Clean and Jerk section, lifting 68 kg, earning her the silver medal with a total of 127 kg.
R. Praggnanandhaa Wins Norway Chess Group A Open Chess Tournament
Young Indian Grandmaster, R. Praggnanandhaa emerged winner in the Norway Chess Group A open chess tournament here with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The 16-year-old GM, the top-seed, was in fine form and remained unbeaten through the nine rounds. He finished the tournament with a win over fellow Indian V. Praneeth, an International Master. Praggnanandhaa finished a full point ahead of second-placed IM Marsel Efroimski (Israel) and IM Jung Min Seo (Sweden).
The Indian teenaged star has been putting in impressive performances and had beaten world number one Magnus Carlsen for a second time in the Chessable Master online event and lost a close final to China's Ding Liren.

Max Verstappen Wins Azerbaijan GP
Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix to extend his Formula One championship lead over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen had one of the best races in his season, finishing on the podium after starting from number three. In the process, Verstappen became the most successful driver in the Red Bull of all time. The 24-year-old now has 66 podiums for Red Bull and is tied ninth for the most race wins alongside Jim Clark and Niki Lauda.
Vettel finished sixth, despite a trip down an escape road. He had tried to pass Esteban Ocon's Alpine at Turn 3 early on but overshot the corner and had to spin turn, dropping to 12th. It took him over 10 laps to catch and pass Ocon properly but, in the long run, his misadventure only cost him one place to Hamilton.

Tamil Nadu's CM Unveils the 44th Chess Olympiad's Logo, Mascot
M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, unveiled the logo and mascot for the 44th Chess Olympiad, which will take place in Mamallapuram next month. Between July 28 and August 10, approximately 2,000 players from over 180 countries will compete in the international event. Mr. Stalin also unveiled a countdown clock for the Olympiad at the Greater Chennai Corporation's headquarters, Ripon Buildings.
The Chess Olympiad torch will be carried across the country soon before being lit in the venue on the first day of the competition.
After the World Championship encounter between India's Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen in 2013, this is Chennai's second big international chess event. The international tournament preparations are moving at a breakneck speed.
Avani Lekhara, a Shooter, Sets World Record to Win Gold at the Para World Cup
Avani Lekhara, the Tokyo Paralympics winner, won gold in the Para Shooting World Cup in Chateauroux, France, with a world record score of 250.6 in the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1. The 20-year-old shooter shattered her own world record of 249.6 to qualify for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Emilia Babska of Poland won silver with a score of 247.6, while Anna Normann of Sweden took bronze with a score of 225.6.
The SH1 category is for athletes competing in rifle events who have a lower limb handicap.
Lekhara won the top prize three days after her coach and escort were denied visas and she was in danger of missing the tournament. Lekhara won gold in the 10m air rifle standing event in the SH1 category at the Tokyo Paralympics in August 2021.
Indian Shooters Win Gold in 10 Meter Air Pistol Mixed Team Event in France
Rubina Francis and Manish Narwal won the 10m P6 air pistol mixed team event to clinch India's third gold medal at the ongoing World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Chateauroux, France.
Narwal and Francis, who aggregated a world record qualifying score of 565 to enter the final at the top position, defeated Chinese pair of Yang Chao and Min Li 17-11 in the title clash.
The Indian pair totalled 274.3.
Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Narwal scored 138.7 in the final six shots. He shot consistent scores of 10s and 9s, but Francis also matched her fancied partner with 9s, a few 8s and 10.

Shot Putter Jasmine Kaur Sets New Youth National Record
Jasmine Kaur won a gold medal in the shot put event of the Khelo India Youth Games, and also registered a New Youth National Record.
Hailing from a small village, Samundari, an hour away from Anandpur Sahib, Jasmine surprised everyone at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium with a throw of 16.12m. She improved her previous Khelo India Games record, which was 14.85.
Notably, her younger sister Gurleen Kaur (U-16 national medallist) was also competing against her today. However, she was ruled out from the medal round owing to an injury. The youngster admires her father and gives all credit to him.
International Cricket Returns to Multan after 14 Years
Pakistan took on West Indies in the first of the three-match One-day International series at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with crucial ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (CWCSL) points up for grabs. This was after a gap of more than 14 years that international cricket returned to the venue with Bangladesh having played here in April 2008. International cricket got suspended in Pakistan due to terrorist attack on Sri Lanka team bus in 2098. The series was initially scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi but was moved to Multan at the last minute.
One of the biggest challenges for both teams was dealing with the heat. Temperatures were around the high 40s.
