Italy Fails to Qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup after Shock Loss to North Macedonia

  • Italy has gone from winning the European Championship failing to qualify for the World Cup in just eight months. Italy will miss out on back-to-back World Cups for the first time in the national team's storied history, having also failed to get to the tournament in 2018.
  • It was only in July that Roberto Mancini and his players were celebrating winning Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium, supposedly completing Italian soccer's redemption story.

P. V. Sindhu Beats Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan to Win Swiss Open Title 2022

  • Ace Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu clinched her second women's singles title of the season with a straight game win over Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Playing her second successive final in the tournament, Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, took 49 minutes to get the better of the fourth seeded Busanan 21-16, 21-8 at the St. Jakkobshalle.
  • For Sindhu, it was a moment of glory as she finally lifted the trophy after losing to Rio Olympics gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain in the final of last edition. She is the second Indian woman to win the Swiss Open, Saina Nehwal having won in 2011 and 2012.

India's First-ever SAI National Centre of Excellence for Mountain Terrain Biking and Bicycle Moto...

  • The centre to be build in collaboration with the Youth Services and Sports department of Himachal Pradesh is being set up to provide world-class training facilities to Indian cyclists so that they can compete for 18 Olympic medals on offer in the disciplines of MTB and BMX. Owing to the requirement of the sport for a hilly terrain and a suitable climate for training, Shimla emerged as a preferred choice for the NCOE.
  • The collaboration between the centre and the state to set up this world-class facility was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022.

Byju's Named a Sponsor of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

  • Edtech unicorn Byju's was named an official sponsor of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
  • The company would now be able to use the FIFA World Cup logo, badge, and assets to build unique promotions and distribute them to football fans all around the world. As part of the partnership, Byju's would also offer educational content for young fans.
  • The FIFA World Cup 2022 will take place from November 21 to December 18.

MS Dhoni Hands over CSK Captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja Ahead of IPL 2022

  • MS Dhoni handed over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team.
  • Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, became the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond.
  • Under Dhoni, CSK clinched the title trophy four times - 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.
  • The change in captaincy comes two days before the CSK's first game of the tournament versus last year's defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Desai Wins India's First Gold at Dubai Para Athletics GP

  • Sprinter Pranav Prashant Desai clinching the gold medal, India's first, in men's 200m T64 final at the Dubai 2022 World Para Athletics Grand Prix - 13th Fazza International Para Athletics Championships.
  • It was the only medal for India on the day as throwers faltered at the Dubai Club for People of Determination grounds.
  • The day also witnessed one world record in men's javelin F40 finals when Iraq's Naas Ahmed hurled the javelin to a distance of 39.08 m to take the gold. It was also an Asian record.
  • After two days, Colombia sits on top of the medals table with 13 medals that has six gold, ahead of Thailand (16) and Tunisia (7). India lies in the 15th place with four medals.

Ash Barty Retires from Tennis

  • Ash Barty surprisingly retired from tennis at age 25 while ranked No. 1 and less than two months after winning the Australian Open for her third Grand Slam singles title.
  • This is not the first time Barty walked away from tennis: She was the Wimbledon junior champion at age 15 in 2011, presaging a promising professional career, but left the tour entirely for nearly two years in 2014 because of burnout, overwhelmed by the pressure and travel required.
  • Barty went on to win major championships on three different surfaces — on clay at the 2019 French Open, on grass at Wimbledon last year and on the hard courts of Melbourne Park in January, becoming the first Australian player in 44 years to triumph at the nation's Grand Slam tournament.
  • She spent 121 weeks at No. 1 in the rankings, including the last 114 in a row.

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas Betters Her Own Women's Triple Jump World Record

  • Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas bettered her own women's triple jump world record with a leap of 15.74 metres to win gold at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
  • The Olympic champion beat her previous outright best of 15.67 metres set at the Tokyo Games last year, as well as her indoor record of 15.43 metres, set in 2020.
  • Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine won silver with 14.74 metres. The bronze went to Jamaica's Kimberly Williams with 14.62 metres.

Manchester City Becomes Top Revenue-generating Football Club

  • Manchester City topped the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time as the world's highest revenue-generating club in a 2020-21 season affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous leaders Barcelona dropped to fourth in the 25th edition of the table, the Spanish club`s lowest position since 2013-14.
  • The Premier League champions and current leaders are only the fourth club to top the Money League after Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

American Taylor Fritz Clinches Indian Wells Title

  • American Taylor Fritz claimed the biggest paycheque of his tennis career, winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-6(5) in the BNP Paribas Open final.
  • Fritz, playing in his first Masters 1000 final, became the first American men's champion at Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001 and the youngest Indian Wells men's champ since Serbian Novak Djokovic in 2011.
