Carbon Footprint Destroys Arctic Sea Ice

  • According to a new study, the average westerner’s carbon emissions destroy 30 square metres of Arctic sea ice every year.
  • With current efforts to cut emissions, the Arctic will lose all its ice in summer within about 20 years.
  • Plummeting Arctic sea ice cover is one of the most obvious signs of climate change and is increasingly linked to extreme weather events.

Paris Climate Deal Comes into Force

  • The Paris agreement on climate change has come into force.
  • Governments have agreed to keep the global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels - and preferably 1.5 degrees.
  • The deal agreed in the French capital less than a year ago commits governments to moving their economies away from fossil fuels.

World's Largest Marine Reserve Created

  • A remote and largely pristine stretch of ocean off Antarctica has received international protection, becoming the world's largest marine reserve as a broad coalition of countries came together to protect 598,000 square miles of water.
  • The Ross Sea is home to some 16,000 species.

World Wildlife Population Falls by 58%

  • As per a report, global wildlife populations have fallen by 58% since 1970.
  • The Living Planet assessment, by the Zoological Society of London and WWF, suggests that if the trend continues the decline in wildlife populations could reach two-thirds among vertebrates by 2020.
  • Animals living in lakes, rivers and wetlands are suffering the biggest losses.

Undersides of Antarctic Ice Sheets are Melting

  • According to the study, a massive chunk of glacier that hangs off Antarctica’s western edge has lost up to half a kilometre in thickness in the seven.
  • This irreversible change is happening most likely due to warming of climate. The glaciers of this region are thinning more quickly than scientists thought.
  • The Smith Glacier, spilling into the Amundsen Sea, shed up to 70 metres (230 feet) per year between 2002 and 2009.

More Corals are Dying

  • As per reports, more corals are dying and others are succumbing to disease and predators after the worst-ever bleaching on Australia`s iconic Great Barrier Reef.
  • It is the third time in 18 years that the World Heritage-listed site, which teems with marine life, has experienced mass bleaching after previous events in 1998 and 2002.
  • Though researchers are still assessing the final death toll from bleaching in the north, it is already clear that this event is much more severe than the two previous ones.
