Maharashtra Announces Free Higher Education for EWS, SEBC, and OBC Girls
The Maharashtra government announced that higher education for girls belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) will be made free.
This initiative, aimed at promoting women's education, was decided during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Additionally, tuition and exam fees for orphaned students of both genders will be waived, as per a government resolution (GR).
Starting from the 2024-25 academic year, the scheme is expected to cost Rs. 906 crore. The GR specifies that female students applying to recognised vocational courses through the Centralised Admission Process in government, aided private, semi-aided private, and non-aided colleges, as well as polytechnics, autonomous government universities, and open universities, will benefit from this initiative.
The courses covered include those in higher and technical education, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, animal husbandry, pisciculture, and dairy development.

IIT Madras, Israel's Tel Aviv University Collaborate to Offer Water Quality Course
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is collaborating with Tel Aviv University, Israel, and KMCH-Research Foundation (KMCH-RF), Coimbatore, to offer a water quality course aimed at creating water-literate citizens.
The four-month-long course, offered in hybrid mode through the NPTEL online platform is for final-year science and engineering students, and for anyone with a technical background who is interested in water quality.
Students will have the option to attend the lectures online or in offline mode, or recorded form. Their understanding of the concepts will be evaluated by online assignments and quizzes.
NMC Approves 113 New Undergraduate Medical Colleges for 2024
The National Medical Commission (NMC) approved the establishment of 113 new undergraduate medical colleges for the academic year 2024-25. This significant move aims to increase the number of MBBS seats across the country, benefiting aspiring medical students and addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide.
The NMC's approval follows an earlier public notice issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), inviting applications for new undergraduate medical colleges.
The NMC was established through the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, enacted by Parliament.

Chhattisgarh Moves to Offer Primary Education in 18 Local Languages, Dialects
The Chhattisgarh government initiated a move to provide primary education in local language and dialects in remote tribal regions as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recommends that mother tongue or the local language be the medium of instruction at least up to the fifth standard.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai directed the State Education Department to develop and distribute for free bilingual books in 18 local languages and dialects, with a focus on providing high-quality educational resources.
"The new initiative of providing education in local language will also be helpful in preserving local culture and traditions," Sai said while addressing the state-level 'Shala Praveshotsav' programme at Bagiya village in tribal-dominated Jashpur district.

Raveendra Chittoor, Dean of Jio Institute, Resigns
Raveendra Chittoor, the dean of Jio Institute, resigned from his post less than a year after he was appointed, marking the second high-profile exit from the Reliance-backed institute this year (2024).
Chittoor has served as a professor of strategy and international business at the Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada. He has also taught at the Indian School of Business and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and worked with IBM, CRISIL, and the Rajan Raheja Group.
The two exits have come at a time when Jio Institute continues to wait for its formal recognition by the Union government as an 'Institution of Eminence (IOE)'.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Initiates Centre of Excellence in Garhwal
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed the establishment of Centres of Excellence in both the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to enhance technical education. During a review meeting of the Technical Education Department at the Secretariat, he emphasised the need for government technical institutes to maximise campus placements for their students.
CM Dhami also called for the inclusion of modern courses and up-to-date equipment in these institutes to meet the needs of industrial institutions.
