Shiv Sena Suggests New Names, Electoral Symbols to EC

  • A day after the Election Commission (EC) dealt it a severe jolt by freezing the party's name and symbol, the Shiv Sena submitted a list of names and symbols to the body, with Shiv Sena (Balasaheb Thackeray) and the trishul (trident) leading its choices. The Shinde faction is expected to submit its options to the EC.
  • The party is dealing with a peculiar situation—the election symbol it has had since 1989 has been frozen while it prepares for a prestige fight in the Andheri East assembly by-polls on November 3. Thackeray had thus urged the EC to allocate a name and symbol at the earliest.

PM Declares Modhera in Gujarat as India's First 24x7 Solar-powered Village

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Modhera, a village in Mehsana district of Gujarat, as India's first solar-powered village.
  • While addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone and dedicating development works at Modhera, the Prime Minister said, "Modhera, which is associated with the Sun Temple will also be known for its strides in solar energy. It's a big day for Modhera as it takes a giant leap towards harnessing solar power."

Dr. Akhilesh Gupta Assumes Additional Charge of Secretary SERB

  • Akhilesh Gupta, senior adviser at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), assumed additional charge of secretary of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB).
  • He took charge after Sandeep Verma relinquished charges as Secretary SERB on completing his tenure.
  • Dr. Gupta currently heads the Policy Coordination and Programme Management Division (PCPM) division and is the overall in charge of 5 National Missions at DST ---National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical System, National Mission on Quantum Technology and Applications, National Super-computing Mission, National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change and National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem.

Hardeep Puri to Co-chair US-India Strategic Clean Energy Partnership Dialogue

  • Union petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri co-chaired the ministerial dialogue of US-India strategic clean energy partnership (USISCEP) with US energy secretary Jennifer Granholm in Washington DC.
  • The revamped USISCEP was launched in 2021 in accordance with the US-India climate and clean energy agenda 2030 partnership announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden at a summit in April 2021.

Uttar Pradesh Government Forms State's First All-woman PAC Battalions

  • The Uttar Pradesh government announced the formation of the state's first three all-woman battalions of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
  • The move came with the aim to entrust the responsibility of security of the state with women.
  • Also, women's help desks were set up at all 1,584 police stations of the state by appointing women beat constables.
  • Three Provincial Sashastra Seema Bal PAC woman battalions are being established in the name of brave and courageous women in the state.
  • These three battalions are being named after Rani Avantibai Lodhi, Uday Devi and Jhalkari Bai, who sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle of India. They are being established at Badaun, Lucknow and Gorakhpur. The process of posting 1262 posts in one women's battalion of PAC is going on. This includes the posts of one senanayak, three deputy Senanayak, with nine assistant senanayak, one shivirpal, 24 inspectors, 108 head constables, 842 scavengers, and cooks.

Modi Becomes First Prime Minister to Attend Kullu Dussehra

  • In the nearly 400 years of the history of the world-famous weeklong Kullu Dussehra festivities, Narendra Modi became the first Prime Minister to pay obeisance to Kullu Valley's chief deity Lord Raghunath in this Himachal Pradesh hill town amidst the presence of nearly 300 deities.
  • Lord Raghunath's chariot was wheeled out from the historical temple in Sultanpur on the first day of Dussehra or Vijay Dashami, the day when the festivities end in the rest of the country.
  • Accompanied by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Prime Minister Modi witnessed the 'rath yatra' with religious fervour.

Telangana's KCR Moves to National Stage with Bharat Rashtra Samithi

  • Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao made his long-standing dream of stepping into national politics come true by launching 'Bharat Rashtra Samithi', a new version of his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party.
  • Rao's national party is the first from two Telugu states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - to be converted into a national party.
  • Rao's move to accelerate his political fight against the BJP coincides with the announcement of schedule for Munugode by-poll in Telangana by the Election Commission. The polling is scheduled to be held on November 3 and votes would be counted on November 6.
  • The TRS, in its foundation day event in April this year, had resolved that the party should play a key role in national politics in the interest of the country as the BJP is "exploiting communal sentiments," for its political convenience.

Gujjars, Bakerwals, Pahadis in Jammu & Kashmir to Get Quota Benefits

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Gujjar, Bakerwal and Pahari communities in Jammu and Kashmir would get reservation benefits in accordance with the recommendations of the Justice Sharma Commission which examined the issue of quota.
  • Shah also said that there will be no decline in ST quota of Gujjars and Bakerwals and Paharis and everyone will get their share.
  • The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 paved the way for providing reservation benefits to the deprived sections of the society in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Justice Sharma Commission recommended that Paharis, Bakerwal and Gujjars should be included for ST quota benefits.

Himachal Pradesh Government Launches App to Aid Police

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur launched the 'Satya Nishtha' app, the first-of-its-kind application in the state to help police investigation and control criminal activities.
  • The app would help police prepare a database of criminals and also study the various offences that take place under different police stations in the district.
  • With this app, a database of information on migrant labourers, foreigners and suspicious persons can be prepared to help speed up investigation in criminal cases. The data available in the app can be accessed from anywhere and at anytime.

Congress Loses Chairmanship of Parliamentary Committee on IT, Home

  • Opposition parties were not been given the chairmanship of any of the four key parliamentary panels, including the committee on Home Affairs and Information Technology, which were with the Congress, in the latest rejig.
  • With this, the chair of six major parliamentary committees, Home, IT, Defence, External Affairs, Finance and Health, all are with the BJP and its allies.
  • The Trinamool Congress, which had the chair of the Parliamentary Panel on Food and Consumer Affairs, was not given the chairmanship of any parliamentary committee after the reshuffle.
