IIT Guwahati Hosts National Conclave on 'Science and Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community'

  • IIT Guwahati hosted a two-day conclave on 'Science and Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community' on 11th and 12th November 2022 in celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (National Tribal Day). The conclave was organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), Govt. of India, in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, North-East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), Shillong, Assam Science & Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Guwahati and Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi:
  • As a Chief Guest, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, graced the inaugural event of the conclave, while Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh virtually presided over the inaugural event.
  • During the two-day event, DST displayed various initiatives aimed at empowering tribal communities through Science, Technology, and Innovation, while also discussing challenges and opportunities for the empowerment of these communities.

Former AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria Takes Voluntary Retirement

  • Former AIIMS director Randeep Guleria took voluntary retirement after serving at the premier institute for more than 30 years.
  • His five-and-a-half-year tenure as director of the institute ended on September 23 after which he had applied for VRS, which has been approved. Guleria was supposed to superannuate in April 2024.
  • Guleria was one of the key persons leading the government's response during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and played a major role in creating awareness about various aspects related to the pandemic.
  • He joined AIIMS as assistant professor in the Department of Medicine in 1992 and then formed the Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in 2011. He headed the department before taking over as AIIMS director for a five-year term on March 28, 2017.

UGC Transfers Three Fellowship Schemes to Ministries

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that three national fellowship schemes were transferred to concerned ministries.
  • According to the official notice, the National Fellowship for SC (NFSC) and the National Fellowship for OBC were transferred to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Also, the Maulana Azad National Fellowship was handed over to the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
  • The nodal agency for NFSC is National Scheduled Cast Finance and Development Corporation, and National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation for NFOBC.

Centre Unveils India's First National Repository for Life Science Data

  • India's first national repository for life science data, generated from publicly-funded research in the country, was unveiled by Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
  • The 'Indian Biological Data Centre' (IBDC), established at the Regional Centre of Biotechnology in Faridabad, Haryana, has data storage capacity of four petabytes and is also home to the 'Brahm' High Performance Computing facility.
  • Prof. Sudhanshu Vrati, Executive Director of IBDC, said that the life sciences data was till now stored in data repositories in Europe and the US, and a need was felt to house the data within the country.

UGC Notifies New Regulations on PhD Degrees

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced new regulations on PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees called "University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022". These rules will replace the rules notified in 2016.
  • Under the new rules, UGC has made a series of significant modifications to the eligibility requirements, admissions process, and evaluation methodologies governing doctoral programmes in colleges and universities.
  • According to the notification, the rules are applicable with the immediate effect.
  • Students who have completed a four-year undergraduate course will be eligible for direct admission to a doctorate programme.
  • Candidate should have a minimum of 75 per cent marks in "aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed". In case the candidate does not have 75 per cent marks in a four-year undergraduate program, she/he has to pursue a one-year master's programme and score at least 55 per cent.
  • The new Rules discontinue the M.Phil programme altogether. However, that will have no bearing on those holding or pursuing M.Phil degrees currently.

QS Asia University Rankings 2023 by Quacquarelli Symonds

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is the top educational institute in South Asia, as per the recently released QS Asia University Rankings 2023. IIT Bombay bagged 40th position in the QS ranking followed by IIT Delhi which secured rank 46. The Asia University Ranking 2023 was released by the international ranking agency - Quacquarelli Symonds.
  • A total of 19 institutes made it to the list of top 200 universities which include IIT Bombay (rank 40), IIT Delhi (rank 46), IISc Bangalore (rank 52), IIT Madras (53), IIT Kharagpur (61), IIT Kanpur (66) University of Delhi (85), IIT Rorkee (114), JNU (119), IIT Guwahati (124), VIT Vellore (173), University of Calcutta (181), Jadavpur University (182), Anna University (185), Chandigarh University (185), IIT Indore (185), BITS Pilani (188), Jamia Millia Islamia (188), and Amity University Noida (200).
  • A total of 118 institutes featured in the list are from India, China- 128, Japan- 106, South Korea- 88. China's Peking University topped the list, the top 10 Asian universities are-National University of Singapore (rank 2), Tsinghua University, Beijing (rank 3), The University of Hong Kong (rank 4), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (rank 5), Fudan University, China (rank 6), Zhejiang University, China (rank 6), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (rank 8), Universiti Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur (rank 9), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (rank 10).
